begin
in the Alps as early as the middle of September. As you travel
south, the temperature becomes more mild. In the summer,
extremely hot temperatures can be found in the areas south of

From the Leaning Tower of Pisa to the canals of Venice, Italy is
truly wonderful!!
Introduction
MAP OF ITALY
The famous 'boot-shaped' peninsula lies in central southern
Europe
The country stretches over 1000 km from north to south
Total area of over 300,000 sq km
It includes two large islands, Sardinia and Sicily, and many
smaller ones
 The country is home to Europe’s largest active volcano Mt.
Etna - a UNESCO World Heritage Site, providing a
spectacular sighting of eruptions, lava flows, soot-filled skies
and extensive caves. Interestingly Italy has the world's highest
number of World Heritage sites - 51 in all.
GEOGRAPHY
(INTRODUCTION)
Location: Italy is located in southern Europe. It sticks out into the
Mediterranean Sea like a boot.
Capital: Rome
Climate: predominantly Mediterranean; Alpine in far north; Hot dry in south
Population: 58,057,477 (July 2004 est.)
History
Great works of art, beautiful scenery, delicious food and fine wines have made the country a top tourist
destination for centuries. The grand tour was created in the 17th century by wealthy foreigners, many
from colder climes like England, who headed south to meander through Italy's villas and gardens, ruins
and churches. In the 19th century, when tourism expanded to include the middle classes, Italy’s popularity
increased.
Economic Impact
Tourism is the country's leading industry, according to the World Factbook. Italians are passionate about
preserving the past, but they also produce some of the world's best modern fashions and furnishings.
Seasons
April to June and September to October are the best months to visit. Prices and crowds increase in the height
of summer. In spring, wildflowers bloom across the countryside and the air is fresh in the city streets and
piazzas. In the fall the grape and olive harvests are celebrated in many regions. The weather may be chilly in
winter, but museums are free of crowds, trattorias are cozy and city shops are festive.
LANGUAGE
 Italian is the official language of Italy, and 93% of
population are native Italian speaker
 Around 50% of population speak a regional dialect
as mother tongue
 Many dialects are mutually unintelligible and thus
considered by linguists as separate languages, but are not
officially recognized
Italy is a country well known for its festivals and many tourists attend festivals in order to experience
the Italian culture and traditions. It has been claimed that there are fewer days in the calendar year than
there are festivals.
