  Josh Hunt, presenter
Matthew 13:34
(MSG) All Jesus
did that day was
tell stories—a long
storytelling
afternoon.
Overview
A new teacher came to
me one day and asked,
“How much time should
I spend preparing for my
lesson?”
My Response:
As little as possible
Why?
People don’t really care
There are so many
 important things to do

D -Disciplined in Daily life
Mark 1:35 Very early in the
 morning, while it was still
dark, Jesus got up, left the
house and went off to a
 solitary place, where he
 prayed.
I - Intimate Friendships
James 5:16 Therefore
 confess your sins to
 each other and pray for
 each other so that you
 may be healed.
The public person I was
wasn’t a lie; it was just
incomplete. When I stopped
communicating about my
problems, the darkness
increased and finally
dominated me. As
a result, I did things that
were contrary to everything
I believe.
S - Self Image
 2 Cor. 5:21 God made him who had no sin
to be sin for us, so that in him we might
  become the righteousness of God.
 Matthew 3:17 And lo a voice from heaven,
saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I
  am well pleased.
 2 Tim. 2:3 Endure hardship with us like a
  good soldier of Christ Jesus.
 Ephes. 1:15 For this reason, ever since I
heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus
and your love for all the saints,
C -Corporate Worship
Irejoiced with those
who said to me, “Let us
go to the house of the
 Lord.” Psalm 122:1
I -Intimate Family Life
1 Tim. 5:8 If anyone does not
 provide for his relatives, and
 especially for his immediate
 family, he has denied the
faith and is worse than an
 unbeliever.
P -Passion for God
 Philip. 1:7 It is right for me to feel this way
about all of you, since I have you in my
heart; for whether I am in chains or
defending and confirming the gospel, all
of you share in God's grace with me.
 Romans 12:11 Never be lacking in zeal,
but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the
  Lord.
L -Lay Ministry
 Ephes. 4:11-12 It was he who
gave some to be apostles, some
to be prophets, some to be
 evangelists, and some to be
 pastors and teachers, to prepare
 God's people for works of
service, so that the body of
 Christ may be built up
L -Lay Ministry
 Know their spiritual gifts
 Ministering according to their
  giftedness
 Asa matter of fact, in practice it works
the other way—the “lower” the part, the
   more basic, and therefore necessary.
You can live without an eye, for
instance, but not without a stomach.
   1 Cor. 12:22 [Msg]
E -Evangelistic Interest
1 Peter 3:15 But in your hearts
set apart Christ as Lord. Always
be prepared to give an answer to
everyone who asks you to give
the reason for the hope that you
 have. But do this with
 gentleness and respect,
E -Evangelistic Interest
 Know how to share the words of the
    gospel
 Accept that fact that God accepts you.
     Believe.
 Cooperate with what God is trying to do in
        your life.
 Know your evangelistic style
Peter’s confrontational
approach
 Acts 2:14 Then Peter stood up with the
Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the
crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live
  in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you;
listen carefully to what I say.”
 Acts 2:37-38 When the people heard this,
they were cut to the heart and said to Peter
and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall
  we do?”
 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every
one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for
the forgiveness of your sins. And you will
receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
Paul's intellectual approach
Acts 17:2 As his custom
 was, Paul went into the
 synagogue, and on three
 Sabbath days he reasoned
 with them from the
 Scriptures,
The Blind man's testimonial
approach
  John 9:25 He replied,
   “Whether he is a sinner
   or not, I don't know.
One thing I do know. I
   was blind but now I
   see!” [NIV]
Dorcas' serving approach
Acts 9:36 In Joppa there
 was a disciple named
 Tabitha (which, when
 translated, is Dorcas), who
 was always doing good and
 helping the poor. [NIV]
The woman at the well's
invitational approach
   John 4:29 “Come,
    see a man who told
    me everything I ever
    did. Could this be
    the Christ?”
Levi's hospitality approach
 Luke 5:27-30 After this, Jesus went out
and saw a tax collector by the name of
Levi sitting at his tax booth. “Follow me,”
Jesus said to him, and Levi got up, left
  everything and followed him.
 Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus
at his house, and a large crowd of tax
collectors and others were eating with
  them.

S - Sacrificial Giving
 John 3:16 For God so loved the world that
he gave his one and only Son, that
whoever believes in him shall not perish
  but have eternal life.
 2 Cor. 9:7 Each man should give what he
has decided in his heart to give, not
reluctantly or under compulsion, for God
  loves a cheerful giver.

What has to happen
inside the student
inside class in order
to create
D.I.S.C.I.P.L.E.S.?
We must get and keep their
attention.
The number one problem in
 the average Sunday School
 is boredom.
Bruce Wilkinson says he
hears it about 80% of the
 time.
If I want people to pay attention
to me, all I have to do is pay
attention to them.
 Voice
     Loud / soft/ slow/ fast/ quiet
 Move my body
 Throw something at them
 Something dramatic
 Something humorous
 Something personal
We must expose them to truth.
 Romans 12:2 Do not conform any longer
to the pattern of this world, but be
transformed by the renewing of your
mind. Then you will be able to test and
approve what God's will is--his good,
  pleasing and perfect will.
 John 8:32 Then you will know the truth,
and the truth will set you free.
Truth must
become truth
that matters
He must see specifically how
this truth relates to his Monday
Morning

 He must see the gap
 He must see the gap in the context
  of grace
 He must see the gap in the context
  of faith
He must see the
advantages of changing
his Monday morning
and the disadvantage of
not changing.
“God is more
 interested in your
holiness than your
   happiness/ joy.”
Psalm 68:3 (NIV)
But may the
righteous be glad
and rejoice before
God; may they be
happy and joyful.
“In spite of the fact
that God is a God of
 love and mercy and
        grace, He still
         requires our
       obedience and
         dedication.”
Is it always in your
best interest to live
the Christian life?
Cassie
Bernall
See, I set before you
   today life and
prosperity, death and
    destruction.
     Deut. 30:15
I am so sorry. I am sorry for the
disappointment, the betrayal,
and the hurt. I am sorry for
the horrible example I have set
for you.
I have an overwhelming, all-
consuming sadness in my heart
for the pain that you and I
and my family have experienced
over the past few days. I am so
sorry for the circumstances that
have caused shame and
embarrassment to all of you.
He must see the advantages of
changing his Monday morning
and the disadvantage of not
changing.
 We are all influenced by
   pain
   pleasure
 Of
the two, pain is the greater
 motivator.
He must believe . . .
He can change
He wants to change
He must change
He must become willing
to change
 Change his behavior
 Change his beliefs
 Change his feelings
He must be held
accountable
 Short term accountability
 “Lite” accountability
 Encourage toward
  accountability groups
 Encourage toward honest
  relationships
He must decide to change
 He needs to decide to exchange
  one behavior for another
 He needs to decide to exchange
  one belief for another
 He needs to decide to exchange
  one feeling for another
Every teaching
must drive
toward the
moment of
decision.

Three ways to teach adults
  Lecture
  Funand games
  Question and answer
The Life Exposure
Question
  Example: State your
   name and one
   strength you have
   as a teacher.
What Does the Text say?
 Example: According to Acts
  18:25 what three qualities make
  up great teaching?
 Acts 18:25 He had been
instructed in the way of the
Lord, and he spoke with great
  fervor and taught about Jesus
  accurately.
Note:
 We must know what
  the text says before
  we can understand
  what it means.
What does the Text
mean?
 Example: Does
  anyone know what is
  meant by the term,
  “perdition”?
“How Did They Feel?”
Questions
 Example: How did
  the prodigal son feel
  as he approached the
  father near the end of
  the story?
Jump ball Questions
 Example: Is Christian living easy
  or hard?
 Take my yoke upon you and
learn from me, for I am gentle
and humble in heart, and you
will find rest for your souls. For
my yoke is easy and my burden
  is light. Matthew 11:29-30
Jump ball Questions
Example: Is Christian
 living easy or hard?
“We must go through
 many hardships to enter
 the kingdom of God,” they
 said. Acts 14:22
Jump ball question
 Do not answer a fool according
to his folly, or you will be like
  him yourself. Proverbs 26.4
 Answer a fool according to his
folly, or he will be wise in his
  own eyes. Proverbs 26:5
Jump ball question
Does God always get
 His way?
Does God always get
 his way with you?
“Where are you at?”
Questions
Example: How often does
 the average believer share
 their faith?
Application Questions
Example: How can we
 apply this to our lives
 specifically this week?
“What is in it for me?”
Questions
 What are the
  advantages for you
  of having a daily
  quiet time?
“What will it cost me if I
don’t?” Questions
What might it cost you if
 you don’t treasure your
 wife?
Testimony Questions:
How did you discover
 your spiritual gift?
How Has It Worked
So Far?
Example: Tell me
 about how you learned
 to have a consistent
 quiet time?
Decision Question
Would you join me in
recommitting your life to
Christ and to being
obedient to the command
of God to rejoice in the
Lord always.
Accountability Questions

 Example: How were
  you able to apply what
  we talked about last
  week?

The easy way: go to
www.joshhunt.com
Quadrant #1: Preparation. How
do you prepare?
 The left brain handles logical
  functions.
 The right brain handles
  creative functions.
Typical left brained
preparation:
 read passage in several translations.
 read commentaries and lesson helps
 look up locations in an atlas.
 look up key words in Bible
   dictionary.
 look up related verses in cross
   references.
  take copious notes
Whole brained preparation
includes some of these things,
plus things like. . .
 Taking walks by the beach
 A Chris Tomlin CD.
 Reading John Ortberg
 A lively late night conversation
 Asking, What if?
 A failed attempt at an outline
 A really bad attempt at a poetry
 Several failed attempts at an outline
When I use both halves of
 my brain, working back
and forth, I find that often
a fully formed lesson will
  come to me, ready to
   teach in about thirty
          minutes.
This process
 cannot be
 hurried or
  forced.
It is change, and
not time that turns
     sinners into
       saints.
