The Lord Manifests His Glory through His Office of the Holy Ministry
By His coming in the flesh and by His preaching and miracles, the Lord Jesus shines the light
of His Gospel upon “the people who walked in darkness” and “who dwelt in a land of deep
darkness” (Is. 9:2). He has also “multiplied the nation” and “increased its joy” (Is. 9:3) by
calling disciples to Himself from the ends of the earth. For this purpose, He calls Peter and
Andrew, with James and John, to follow Him and be “fishers of men” (Matt. 4:19). As Jesus
did, they also go forth “proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and
every affliction among the people” (Matt. 4:23). They preach the foolishness of the Cross of
Christ as the very power and wisdom of God. This word and preaching of the Cross divides
“those who are perishing” from “us who are being saved” (1 Cor. 1:18), but it unites the
Church, the one Body of Christ, “in the same mind and the same judgment” (1 Cor. 1:10).

1 O Christ, our true and only light,
Enlighten those who sit in night;
Let those afar now hear Your voice
And in Your fold with us rejoice.
2 Fill with the radiance of Your
grace
The souls now lost in error's maze;
Enlighten those whose inmost
minds
Some dark delusion haunts and
blinds.
3 O gently call those gone astray
That they may find the saving way!
Let ev'ry conscience sore oppressed
In you find peace and heav'nly rest.
4 Shine on the darkened and the
cold;
Recall the wand'rers to Your fold.
Unite all those who walk apart;
Confirm the weak and doubting
heart,
5 That they with us may evermore
Such grace with wond'ring thanks
adore
And endless praise to You be giv'n
By all Your Church in earth and
heav'n.

For the Church on earth, that
believers everywhere might
rejoice in repentance and the
kingdom of heaven and proclaim
the Savior, Jesus Christ, as the one
who has conquered sin, death and
devil by His life, death and
resurrection, let us pray to the
Lord: Lord, have mercy.
For our Synod, that the Koinonia
Project and other fraternal
conversation might bear fruit, that
there would be no divisions
among us and that we might be
united in the same mind and in the
same judgment under the cross of
Christ....
For the world, that all who hear
the folly of the cross might repent
of their sins, believe in Jesus and
be baptized in His name....
For the nations of this world, that
the almighty God would provide
wise and just rulers, content and
compassionate citizens, honest
industry and fruitful harvest…
For the unborn, that the Lord
Jesus Christ who was conceived
by the Holy Spirit and born of the
Virgin Mary might form them for
His service and praise, grant them
health and safe delivery, protect
them from all danger and
especially from those who would
seek to end their lives..
For parents who are tempted to
consider abortion, that the Lord
who creates and preserves life
would grant to them repentance,
faith in His forgiveness and
provision, deliverance from fear
and courage to defend life..

For women who have undergone and
for those who advocate elective
abortion, that the Lord of life would
deliver them from hardened hearts,
lead them gently to contrition and
repentance, and comfort the penitent
with the truth that His death has
atoned for all of their sins…
For husbands and wives who are
unable to have children, that the Lord
would grant them consolation and
grace to trust in His holy will....
For children who are in need of family
and home, that the Lord would set His
angels over them and provide them
with loving parents, safety and
security, and lavish exposure to His
Means of Grace…
For those who suffer from afflictions
of body and mind, loneliness or
despair [especially _________], that
the Savior who healed all the afflicted
who were brought to Him might grant
them healing in His time and faith to
trust Him in the midst of trial…
For all who receive the Sacrament of
the Altar today, that they might
receive the true body and blood of the
Lord Jesus Christ for the forgiveness
of sins and the strengthening of faith,
and thus eagerly await looking upon
the goodness of the Lord in the land of
the living forever…
We give thanks to You, heavenly
Father, that You delight to hear the
prayers of Your people and that You
promise to be gracious to us and to
answer us. Receive these and all of
our petitions, and answer them
according to Your will for our good;
through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our
Lord, who lives and reigns with You
and the Holy Spirit, one God now and
forever. Amen.

The Lord Manifests His Glory through His
Office of the Holy Ministry
Isaiah 9:1-4
For to Us a Child Is Born
9 [a] But there will be no gloom
for her who was in anguish. In
the former time he brought into
contempt the land of Zebulun
and the land of Naphtali, but in
the latter time he has made
glorious the way of the sea, the
land beyond the Jordan, Galilee
of the nations.[b]
2 [c] The people who walked in
darkness
have seen a great light;
those who dwelt in a land
of deep darkness,
on them has light shone.
3 You have multiplied the nation;
you have increased its joy;
they rejoice before you
as with joy at the harvest,
as they are glad when they
divide the spoil.
4 For the yoke of his burden,
and the staff for his shoulder,
the rod of his oppressor,
you have broken as on the day
of Midian.
1 Corinthians 1:10-18
Divisions in the Church
10 I appeal to you, brothers,[a] by the
name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all
of you agree, and that there be
no divisions among you, but that you be
united in the same mind and the same
judgment. 11 For it has been reported to
me by Chloe's people that there
is quarreling among you, my
brothers. 12 What I mean is that each
one of you says, “I follow Paul,” or “I
follow Apollos,” or “I follow Cephas,”
or “I follow Christ.” 13 Is Christ
divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or
were you baptized in the name of
Paul?14 I thank God that I baptized none
of you except Crispus andGaius, 15 so
that no one may say that you were
baptized in my name. 16 (I did baptize
also the household of Stephanas.
Beyond that, I do not know whether I
baptized anyone else.) 17 For Christ did
not send me to baptize but to preach the
gospel, and not with words of eloquent
wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be
emptied of its power.
Christ the Wisdom and Power of God
18 For the word of the cross is folly
to those who are perishing, but to
us who are being saved it is the power
of God.
Matthew 4:12-25
Jesus Begins His Ministry
12 Now when he heard that John had been
arrested, he withdrew into Galilee. 13 And
leaving Nazareth he went and lived
inCapernaum by the sea, in the territory
of Zebulun and Naphtali,14 so that what
was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might
be fulfilled:
15 “The land of Zebulun and the land of
Naphtali,
the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan,
Galilee of the Gentiles—
16 the people dwelling in darkness
have seen a great light,
and for those dwelling in the region
and shadow of death,
on them a light has dawned.”
17 From that time Jesus began to preach,
saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of
heaven is at hand.”
Jesus Calls the First Disciples
18 While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he
saw two brothers, Simon (who is called
Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a
net into the sea, for they were
fishermen. 19 And he said to them,“Follow
me, and I will make you fishers of
men.”[a] 20 Immediately they left their nets
and followed him. 21 And going on from
there he saw two other brothers, James the
son of Zebedee and John his brother, in
the boat with Zebedee their father,
mending their nets, and he called
them. 22 Immediately they left the boat
and their father and followed him.
Jesus Ministers to Great Crowds
23 And he went throughout all
Galilee, teaching in their synagogues
and proclaiming the gospel of the
kingdom andhealing every disease and
every affliction among the people. 24 So
his fame spread throughout all Syria,
and they brought him all the sick, those
afflicted with various diseases
and pains, those oppressed by
demons, epileptics, and paralytics, and he
healed them. 25 And great crowds
followed him from Galilee and
theDecapolis, and from Jerusalem and
Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.
Psalm 27:1-14
The LORD Is My Light and My Salvation
Of David.
27 The LORD is my light and my salvation;
whom shall I fear?
The LORD is the stronghold[a] of my life;
of whom shall I be afraid?
2 When evildoers assail me
to eat up my flesh,
my adversaries and foes,
it is they who stumble and fall.
3 Though an army encamp against me,
my heart shall not fear;
though war arise against me,
yet[b] I will be confident.
4 One thing have I asked of the LORD,
that will I seek after:
that I may dwell in the house of the LORD
all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD
and to inquire[c] in his temple.
5 For he will hide me in his shelter
in the day of trouble;
he will conceal me under the cover of his tent;
he will lift me high upon a rock.
6 And now my head shall be lifted up
above my enemies all around me,
and I will offer in his tent
sacrifices with shouts of joy;
I will sing and make melody to the LORD.
7 Hear, O LORD, when I cry aloud;
be gracious to me and answer me!
8 You have said, “Seek[d] my face.”
My heart says to you,
“Your face, LORD, do I seek.”[e]
9 Hide not your face from me.
Turn not your servant away in anger,
O you who have been my help.
Cast me not off; forsake me not,
O God of my salvation!
10 For my father and my mother have forsaken
me,
but the LORD will take me in.
11 Teach me your way, O LORD,
and lead me on a level path
because of my enemies.
12 Give me not up to the will of my adversaries;
for false witnesses have risen against me,
and they breathe out violence.
13 I believe[f] that I shall look upon the
goodness of the LORD
in the land of the living!
14 Wait for the LORD;
be strong, and let your heart take courage;
wait for the LORD!

Samuel Given to the LORD
21 The man Elkanah and all his housewent up to offer
to the LORD the yearly sacrifice and to pay his
vow. 22 But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her
husband, “As soon as the child is weaned, I will bring
him, so that he may appear in the presence of
the LORD and dwell there forever.” 23 Elkanah her
husband said to her, “Do what seems best to you;
wait until you have weaned him; only, may
the LORD establish his word.” So the woman
remained and nursed her son until she weaned
him.24 And when she had weaned him, she took him
up with her, along with a three-year-old bull,[a] an
ephah[b] of flour, and a skin of wine, and she brought
him to the house of the LORD at Shiloh. And the child
was young. 25 Then they slaughtered the bull, and
they brought the child to Eli. 26 And she said, “Oh, my
lord! As you live, my lord, I am the woman who was
standing here in your presence, praying to
the LORD.27 For this child I prayed, and the LORDhas
granted me my petition that I made to
him. 28 Therefore I have lent him to the LORD. As long
as he lives, he is lent to the LORD.”
And he worshiped the LORD there.
Hebrews 2:14-18
14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and
blood, he himself likewisepartook of the same things,
thatthrough death he might destroy the one who has
the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all
those whothrough fear of death were subject to
lifelong slavery. 16 For surely it is not angels that he
helps, but he helps the offspring of
Abraham. 17 Therefore he had to be made like his
brothers in every respect, so that he might become a
merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God,
to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For
because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is
able to help those who are being tempted.
Luke 2:22-40
Jesus Presented at the Temple
22 And when the time came for their purification
according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up
to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord23 (as it is
written in the Law of the Lord, “Every male who first
opens the womb shall be called holy to the
Lord”)24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is
said in the Law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves, or
two young pigeons.” 25 Now there was a man in
Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man
was righteous and devout,waiting for the consolation
of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it
had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he
would not see death before he had seen the Lord's
Christ.27 And he came in the Spirit into the temple,
and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to
do for him according to the custom of the Law,28 he
took him up in his arms andblessed God and said,
29 “Lord, now you are letting your servant[a] depart in
peace,
according to your word;
30 for my eyes have seen yoursalvation
31 that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples,
32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and for glory to your people Israel.” 33 And his father and his mother
marveled at what was said about him.34 And Simeon blessed them and
said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and
rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed35 (and a sword
will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many
hearts may be revealed.”
36 And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the
tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived with her
husband seven years from when she was a virgin,37 and then as a widow
until she was eighty-four.[b] She did not depart from the
temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day. 38 And coming
up at that very hour she began to give thanks to God and to speak of him
to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.
The Return to Nazareth
39 And when they had performed everything according to the Law of the
Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. 40 And
the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. And the favor of
God was upon him.
Psalm 84
My Soul Longs for the Courts of theLORD
To the choirmaster: according to The Gittith.[a] A
Psalm of the Sons of Korah.
84 How lovely is your dwelling place,
O LORD of hosts!
2 My soul longs, yes, faints
for the courts of the LORD;
my heart and flesh sing for joy
to the living God.
3 Even the sparrow finds a home,
and the swallow a nest for herself,
where she may lay her young,
at your altars, O LORD of hosts,
my King and my God.
4 Blessed are those who dwell in your house,
ever singing your praise!Selah
5 Blessed are those whose strength is in you,
in whose heart are the highways to Zion.[b]
6 As they go through the Valley of Baca
they make it a place of springs;
the early rain also covers it with pools.
7 They go from strength to strength;
each one appears before God in Zion.
8 O LORD God of hosts, hear my prayer;
give ear, O God of Jacob!Selah
9 Behold our shield, O God;
look on the face of your anointed!
10 For a day in your courts is better
than a thousand elsewhere.
I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my
God
than dwell in the tents of wickedness.
11 For the LORD God is a sun andshield;
the LORD bestows favor and honor.
No good thing does he withhold
from those who walk uprightly.
12 O LORD of hosts,
blessed is the one who trusts in you!

  • 2. Isaiah 9:1–4 1 Corinthians 1:10–18 Matthew 4:12–25 The Lord Manifests His Glory through His Office of the Holy Ministry By His coming in the flesh and by His preaching and miracles, the Lord Jesus shines the light of His Gospel upon “the people who walked in darkness” and “who dwelt in a land of deep darkness” (Is. 9:2). He has also “multiplied the nation” and “increased its joy” (Is. 9:3) by calling disciples to Himself from the ends of the earth. For this purpose, He calls Peter and Andrew, with James and John, to follow Him and be “fishers of men” (Matt. 4:19). As Jesus did, they also go forth “proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people” (Matt. 4:23). They preach the foolishness of the Cross of Christ as the very power and wisdom of God. This word and preaching of the Cross divides “those who are perishing” from “us who are being saved” (1 Cor. 1:18), but it unites the Church, the one Body of Christ, “in the same mind and the same judgment” (1 Cor. 1:10).

  • 4. 1 O Christ, our true and only light, Enlighten those who sit in night; Let those afar now hear Your voice And in Your fold with us rejoice. 2 Fill with the radiance of Your grace The souls now lost in error's maze; Enlighten those whose inmost minds Some dark delusion haunts and blinds. 3 O gently call those gone astray That they may find the saving way! Let ev'ry conscience sore oppressed In you find peace and heav'nly rest. 4 Shine on the darkened and the cold; Recall the wand'rers to Your fold. Unite all those who walk apart; Confirm the weak and doubting heart, 5 That they with us may evermore Such grace with wond'ring thanks adore And endless praise to You be giv'n By all Your Church in earth and heav'n.

For our Synod, that the Koinonia Project and other fraternal conversation might bear fruit, that there would be no divisions among us and that we might be united in the same mind and in the same judgment under the cross of Christ.... For the world, that all who hear the folly of the cross might repent of their sins, believe in Jesus and be baptized in His name.... For the nations of this world, that the almighty God would provide wise and just rulers, content and compassionate citizens, honest industry and fruitful harvest… For the unborn, that the Lord Jesus Christ who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary might form them for His service and praise, grant them health and safe delivery, protect them from all danger and especially from those who would seek to end their lives.. For parents who are tempted to consider abortion, that the Lord who creates and preserves life would grant to them repentance, faith in His forgiveness and provision, deliverance from fear and courage to defend life..

For children who are in need of family and home, that the Lord would set His angels over them and provide them with loving parents, safety and security, and lavish exposure to His Means of Grace… For those who suffer from afflictions of body and mind, loneliness or despair [especially _________], that the Savior who healed all the afflicted who were brought to Him might grant them healing in His time and faith to trust Him in the midst of trial… For all who receive the Sacrament of the Altar today, that they might receive the true body and blood of the Lord Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins and the strengthening of faith, and thus eagerly await looking upon the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living forever… We give thanks to You, heavenly Father, that You delight to hear the prayers of Your people and that You promise to be gracious to us and to answer us. Receive these and all of our petitions, and answer them according to Your will for our good; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God now and forever. Amen.

  • 8. Isaiah 9:1-4 For to Us a Child Is Born 9 [a] But there will be no gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he has made glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.[b] 2 [c] The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone. 3 You have multiplied the nation; you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as they are glad when they divide the spoil. 4 For the yoke of his burden, and the staff for his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian.
  • 9. 1 Corinthians 1:10-18 Divisions in the Church 10 I appeal to you, brothers,[a] by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. 11 For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there is quarreling among you, my brothers. 12 What I mean is that each one of you says, “I follow Paul,” or “I follow Apollos,” or “I follow Cephas,” or “I follow Christ.” 13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?14 I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus andGaius, 15 so that no one may say that you were baptized in my name. 16 (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.) 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with words of eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. Christ the Wisdom and Power of God 18 For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
  • 10. Matthew 4:12-25 Jesus Begins His Ministry 12 Now when he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee. 13 And leaving Nazareth he went and lived inCapernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali,14 so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: 15 “The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles— 16 the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned.” 17 From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Jesus Calls the First Disciples 18 While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 19 And he said to them,“Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”[a] 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed him. 21 And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. 22 Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him. Jesus Ministers to Great Crowds 23 And he went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom andhealing every disease and every affliction among the people. 24 So his fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and pains, those oppressed by demons, epileptics, and paralytics, and he healed them. 25 And great crowds followed him from Galilee and theDecapolis, and from Jerusalem and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.
  • 11. Psalm 27:1-14 The LORD Is My Light and My Salvation Of David. 27 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold[a] of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? 2 When evildoers assail me to eat up my flesh, my adversaries and foes, it is they who stumble and fall. 3 Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war arise against me, yet[b] I will be confident. 4 One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to inquire[c] in his temple. 5 For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will lift me high upon a rock. 6 And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me, and I will offer in his tent sacrifices with shouts of joy; I will sing and make melody to the LORD. 7 Hear, O LORD, when I cry aloud; be gracious to me and answer me! 8 You have said, “Seek[d] my face.” My heart says to you, “Your face, LORD, do I seek.”[e] 9 Hide not your face from me. Turn not your servant away in anger, O you who have been my help. Cast me not off; forsake me not, O God of my salvation! 10 For my father and my mother have forsaken me, but the LORD will take me in. 11 Teach me your way, O LORD, and lead me on a level path because of my enemies. 12 Give me not up to the will of my adversaries; for false witnesses have risen against me, and they breathe out violence. 13 I believe[f] that I shall look upon the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living! 14 Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD!

  • 13. 1 Sam. 1:21–28; Heb. 2:14–18; Luke 2:22–40; Psalm 84 1 Samuel 1:21-28 Samuel Given to the LORD 21 The man Elkanah and all his housewent up to offer to the LORD the yearly sacrifice and to pay his vow. 22 But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, “As soon as the child is weaned, I will bring him, so that he may appear in the presence of the LORD and dwell there forever.” 23 Elkanah her husband said to her, “Do what seems best to you; wait until you have weaned him; only, may the LORD establish his word.” So the woman remained and nursed her son until she weaned him.24 And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, along with a three-year-old bull,[a] an ephah[b] of flour, and a skin of wine, and she brought him to the house of the LORD at Shiloh. And the child was young. 25 Then they slaughtered the bull, and they brought the child to Eli. 26 And she said, “Oh, my lord! As you live, my lord, I am the woman who was standing here in your presence, praying to the LORD.27 For this child I prayed, and the LORDhas granted me my petition that I made to him. 28 Therefore I have lent him to the LORD. As long as he lives, he is lent to the LORD.” And he worshiped the LORD there. Hebrews 2:14-18 14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewisepartook of the same things, thatthrough death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those whothrough fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. 16 For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham. 17 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted. Luke 2:22-40 Jesus Presented at the Temple 22 And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”)24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.” 25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout,waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ.27 And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law,28 he took him up in his arms andblessed God and said, 29 “Lord, now you are letting your servant[a] depart in peace, according to your word; 30 for my eyes have seen yoursalvation 31 that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.” 33 And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him.34 And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed35 (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.” 36 And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived with her husband seven years from when she was a virgin,37 and then as a widow until she was eighty-four.[b] She did not depart from the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day. 38 And coming up at that very hour she began to give thanks to God and to speak of him to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem. The Return to Nazareth 39 And when they had performed everything according to the Law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. 40 And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. And the favor of God was upon him. Psalm 84 My Soul Longs for the Courts of theLORD To the choirmaster: according to The Gittith.[a] A Psalm of the Sons of Korah. 84 How lovely is your dwelling place, O LORD of hosts! 2 My soul longs, yes, faints for the courts of the LORD; my heart and flesh sing for joy to the living God. 3 Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, at your altars, O LORD of hosts, my King and my God. 4 Blessed are those who dwell in your house, ever singing your praise!Selah 5 Blessed are those whose strength is in you, in whose heart are the highways to Zion.[b] 6 As they go through the Valley of Baca they make it a place of springs; the early rain also covers it with pools. 7 They go from strength to strength; each one appears before God in Zion. 8 O LORD God of hosts, hear my prayer; give ear, O God of Jacob!Selah 9 Behold our shield, O God; look on the face of your anointed! 10 For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness. 11 For the LORD God is a sun andshield; the LORD bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly. 12 O LORD of hosts, blessed is the one who trusts in you!
