Let us pray for the whole
people of God in Christ Jesus
and for all people according to
their needs.
Heavenly Father, almighty and
everlasting God, Your Son
Jesus Christ is our sure
foundation. Continue to build
Your Church upon this
cornerstone, that we with all the
saints may dwell securely in
Your presence now and forever.
Lord, in Your mercy, hear our
prayer.
Holy Lord, You are the bread of
life. Whoever comes to you
shall never hunger. Feed us
today the heavenly meal of
Your body and blood in the
Sacrament, that with repentant
hearts we may be filled with
Your goodness and obtain a
share in Your unending life.
Lord, in Your mercy, hear our
prayer.
Almighty God, in mercy and
kindness You showed love to
all mankind. Send your spirit
on this congregation, that we
may pursue Your gracious gifts
and fervently love one another
in word and deed. Lord, in Your
mercy, hear our prayer.
Prince of Peace, watch over our
government and those who
protect us. Grant them wisdom
and discernment, that through
Your guidance they may serve
both You and their country.
Lord, in Your mercy, hear our
prayer.

Creator and Sustainer of life, in
Your steadfast love You care
for all creation. Comfort those
women who have been
victimized by the abortion
industry, that they may take
refuge in the shadow of your
wings. Lord, in Your
mercy, hear our prayer.
Father in Heaven, You lovingly
made man in your image. As
you provide even for the
sparrows, also care for the
hungry, poor, homeless and
unemployed among us, that
they may glorify Your name.
Lord, in Your mercy, hear our
prayer.
Merciful God, with Your power
you caused the blind to see and
the deaf to hear. Be with all
who are sick and
suffering, [especially, _______
__]. Keep them in Your tender
care, that they may have hope
for full restoration in the world
to come. Lord, in Your
mercy, hear our prayer.
Source of unending life, we
thank You this day for all Your
servants who rest now in Your
nearer presence and await the
day of resurrection. Fill us with
the joyful hope that sustained
them in their pilgrimage.
Lord, in Your mercy, hear our
prayer.
Into Your hands, O Lord, we
commend all for whom we
pray, trusting in Your
mercy, through Your Son, Jesus
Christ, our Lord. Amen.
1. Full many shall come from the east and the
west
And sit at the feast of salvation,
With Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob the blest,
Obeying the Lord‘s invitation.
Have mercy upon us, O Jesus!
2. But they who have always resisted His grace
And on their own virtue depended
Shall then be condemned and cast out from His
face,
Eternally lost and unfriended.
Have mercy upon us, O Jesus!
3. May we too give heed when our Savior doth
call
In accents persuasive and tender,
And may we be guests at His feast, one and all,
Our praise and obeisance to render.
Have mercy upon us, O Jesus!
4. Oh, that we the throng of the ransomed may
swell,
To whom He hath granted remission!
God graciously make us in heaven to dwell
And save us from endless perdition.
Have mercy upon us, O Jesus!
5. God grant that I may of His infinite love
Remain in His merciful keeping
And sit with the King at His table above
When here in the grave I am sleeping.
Have mercy upon us, O Jesus!
6. Then ended will be, like a dream that is past,
All trial and trouble and sorrow;
All questions and doubts will be answered at
last,
When dawneth eternity‘s morrow.
Have mercy upon us, O Jesus!
7. Then Heaven will ring with an anthem more
grand
Than ever on earth was recorded,
When all of the saved shall receive at His hand
The crown to the victors awarded.
Have mercy upon us, O Jesus!

The Gospel Call Goes Out to
All
Proverbs 9:1-10
Wisdom’s Feast
9 Wisdom has built her house,
she has hewn her seven pillars.
2 She has slaughtered her animals, she
has mixed her wine,
she has also set her table.
3 She has sent out her servant-girls, she
calls
from the highest places in the town,
4 ―You that are simple, turn in here!‖
To those without sense she says,
5 ―Come, eat of my bread
and drink of the wine I have mixed.
6 Lay aside immaturity,[a] and live,
and walk in the way of insight.‖
General Maxims
7 Whoever corrects a scoffer wins
abuse;
whoever rebukes the wicked gets hurt.
8 A scoffer who is rebuked will only
hate you;
the wise, when rebuked, will love
you.
9 Give instruction[b] to the wise, and
they will become wiser still;
teach the righteous and they will gain
in learning.
10 The fear of the LORD is the
beginning of wisdom,
and the knowledge of the Holy One is
insight.
Ephesians 2:13-22
13 But now in Christ Jesus you who
once were far off have been brought
near by the blood of Christ. 14 For he is
our peace; in his flesh he has made both
groups into one and has broken down
the dividing wall, that is, the hostility
between us. 15 He has abolished the law
with its commandments and
ordinances, that he might create in
himself one new humanity in place of
the two, thus making peace, 16 and
might reconcile both groups to God in
one body[a] through the cross, thus
putting to death that hostility through
it.[b] 17 So he came and proclaimed
peace to you who were far off and peace
to those who were near; 18 for through
him both of us have access in one Spirit
to the Father. 19 So then you are no
longer strangers and aliens, but you are
citizens with the saints and also
members of the household of God,20
built upon the foundation of the apostles
and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself
as the cornerstone.[c] 21 In him the
whole structure is joined together and
grows into a holy temple in the Lord; 22
in whom you also are built together
spiritually[d] into a dwelling place for
God.
1 John 3:13-18
13 Do not be astonished, brothers and
sisters,[a] that the world hates you.14 We
know that we have passed from death to life
because we love one another. Whoever does
not love abides in death. 15 All who hate a
brother or sister[b] are murderers, and you
know that murderers do not have eternal
life abiding in them. 16 We know love by
this, that he laid down his life for us—and
we ought to lay down our lives for one
another. 17 How does God‘s love abide in
anyone who has the world‘s goods and sees
a brother or sister[c] in need and yet refuses
help?
18 Little children, let us love, not in word
or speech, but in truth and action.
Luke 14:15-24
The Parable of the Great Dinner
15 One of the dinner guests, on hearing
this, said to him, ―Blessed is anyone who
will eat bread in the kingdom of God!‖ 16
Then Jesus[a] said to him, ―Someone
gave a great dinner and invited many. 17
At the time for the dinner he sent his
slave to say to those who had been
invited, ‗Come; for everything is ready
now.‘ 18 But they all alike began to make
excuses. The first said to him, ‗I have
bought a piece of land, and I must go out
and see it; please accept my regrets.‘ 19
Another said, ‗I have bought five yoke of
oxen, and I am going to try them out;
please accept my regrets.‘ 20 Another
said, ‗I have just been married, and
therefore I cannot come.‘ 21 So the slave
returned and reported this to his master.
Then the owner of the house became
angry and said to his slave, ‗Go out at
once into the streets and lanes of the town
and bring in the poor, the crippled, the
blind, and the lame.‘ 22 And the slave
said, ‗Sir, what you ordered has been
done, and there is still room.‘ 23 Then the
master said to the slave, ‗Go out into the
roads and lanes, and compel people to
come in, so that my house may be filled.
24 For I tell you,[b] none of those who
were invited will taste my dinner.‘‖
Psalm 34:12-22
12 Which of you desires life,
and covets many days to enjoy good?
13 Keep your tongue from evil,
and your lips from speaking deceit.
14 Depart from evil, and do good;
seek peace, and pursue it.
15 The eyes of the LORD are on the
righteous,
and his ears are open to their cry.
16 The face of the LORD is against
evildoers,
to cut off the remembrance of them
from the earth.
17 When the righteous cry for help, the
LORD hears,
and rescues them from all their
troubles.
18 The LORD is near to the
brokenhearted,
and saves the crushed in spirit.
19 Many are the afflictions of the
righteous,
but the LORD rescues them from them
all.
20 He keeps all their bones;
not one of them will be broken.
21 Evil brings death to the wicked,
and those who hate the righteous will
be condemned.
22 The LORD redeems the life of his
servants;
none of those who take refuge in him
will be condemned.
SECOND SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY
Proverbs 9:1–10
Ephesians 2:13–22
or 1 John 3:13–18
Luke 14:15–24
The Gospel Call Goes Out to All
Wisdom has issued an invitation to the divine feast: ―Come, eat of my bread and drink of the
wine I have mixed. Leave your simple ways, and live, and walk in the way of insight‖ (Prov. 9:5–
6). This is the call of the Spirit of Christ to believe the Gospel and to receive His saving gifts in
the Holy Supper. Many make excuses and reject this invitation, even as the Jews did in the days
of Jesus, yet the Master‘s house will be filled. The Gospel call therefore goes out to the lowly
and despised, into the highways, even to all the Gentiles (Luke 14:15–24). For ―you who once
were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ‖ (Eph. 2:13–22). In Christ, believing
Jews and Gentiles are no longer strangers but fellow members of the household of God. The
enmity of class and race is put to death through the cross. Having been reconciled in the one
Body of Christ, we are enabled to love one another (1 John 3:13–18) as we await the marriage
feast of the Lamb in His kingdom which will have no end.

Praise for the Lord
18 There is no God like you.
You take away people‘s guilt.
God will forgive his people who survive.
He will not stay angry with them forever,
because he enjoys being kind.
19 He will come back and comfort us again.
He will throw all our sins into the deep sea.
20 God, please be true to Jacob.
Be kind and loyal to Abraham,[a] as you promised our ancestors
long ago.
1 Timothy 1:12-17
Thanks for God‘s Mercy
12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord because he trusted me and gave me
this work of serving him. He gives me strength. 13 In the past I
insulted Christ. As a proud and violent man, I persecuted his
people. But God gave me mercy because I did not know what I was
doing. I did that before I became a believer. 14 But our Lord gave
me a full measure of his grace. And with that grace came the faith
and love that are in Christ Jesus.
15 Here is a true statement that should be accepted without question:
Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, and I am the worst
of them. 16 But I was given mercy so that in me Christ Jesus could
show that he has patience without limit. Christ showed his patience
with me, the worst of all sinners. He wanted me to be an example
for those who would believe in him and have eternal life.17 Honor
and glory to the King who rules forever. He cannot be destroyed
and cannot be seen. Honor and glory forever and ever to the only
God. Amen.
1 Peter 5:6-11
6 So be humble under God‘s powerful hand. Then he will lift you
up when the right time comes. 7 Give all your worries to
him, because he cares for you.
8 Control yourselves and be careful! The devil is your enemy, and
he goes around like a roaring lion looking for someone to attack
and eat. 9 Refuse to follow the devil. Stand strong in your faith.
You know that your brothers and sisters all over the world are
having the same sufferings that you have.
10 Yes, you will suffer for a short time. But after that, God will
make everything right. He will make you strong. He will support
you and keep you from falling. He is the God who gives all grace.
He chose you to share in his glory in Christ. That glory will
continue forever. 11 All power is his forever. Amen.
Luke 15:1-10
Joy in Heaven
15 Many tax collectors and sinners came to listen to Jesus. 2 Then
the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to
complain, ―Look, this man[a] welcomes sinners and even eats with
them!‖
3 Then Jesus told them this story: 4 ―Suppose one of you has 100
sheep, but one of them gets lost. What will you do? You will leave
the other 99 sheep there in the field and go out and look for the lost
sheep. You will continue to search for it until you find it. 5 And
when you find it, you will be very happy. You will carry
it 6 home, go to your friends and neighbors and say to them, ‗Be
happy with me because I found my lost sheep!‘ 7 In the same way, I
tell you, heaven is a happy place when one sinner decides to
change. There is more joy for that one sinner than for 99 good
people who don‘t need to change.
8 ―Suppose a woman has ten silver coins,[b] but she loses one of
them. She will take a light and clean the house. She will look
carefully for the coin until she finds it. 9 And when she finds it, she
will call her friends and neighbors and say to them, ‗Be happy with
me because I have found the coin that I lost!‘ 10 In the same
way, it‘s a happy time for the angels of God when one sinner
decides to change.‖
Luke 15:11-32
Story About Two Sons
11 Then Jesus said, ―There was a man who had two sons. 12 The
younger son said to his father, ‗Give me now the part of your
property that I am supposed to receive someday.‘ So the father
divided his wealth between his two sons.
13 ―A few days later the younger son gathered up all that he had and
left. He traveled far away to another country, and there he wasted
his money living like a fool. 14 After he spent everything he
had, there was a terrible famine throughout the country. He was
hungry and needed money. 15 So he went and got a job with one of
the people who lived there. The man sent him into the fields to feed
pigs.16 He was so hungry that he wanted to eat the food the pigs
were eating. But no one gave him anything.
17 ―The son realized that he had been very foolish. He thought, ‗All
my father‘s hired workers have plenty of food. But here I
am, almost dead because I have nothing to eat. 18 I will leave and
go to my father. I will say to him: Father, I have sinned against
God and have done wrong to you. 19 I am no longer worthy to be
called your son. But let me be like one of your hired workers.‘ 20 So
he left and went to his father.
The Younger Son Returns
―While the son was still a long way off, his father saw him coming
and felt sorry for him. So he ran to him and hugged and kissed
him. 21 The son said, ‗Father, I have sinned against God and have
done wrong to you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.‘
22 ―But the father said to his servants, ‗Hurry! Bring the best clothes
and put them on him. Also, put a ring on his finger and good
sandals on his feet. 23 And bring our best calf and kill it so that we
can celebrate with plenty to eat. 24 My son was dead, but now he is
alive again! He was lost, but now he is found!‘ So they began to
have a party.
The Older Son Complains
25 ―The older son had been out in the field. When he came near the
house, he heard the sound of music and dancing. 26 So he called to
one of the servant boys and asked, ‗What does all this mean?‘27 The
boy said, ‗Your brother has come back, and your father killed the
best calf to eat. He is happy because he has his son back safe and
sound.‘
28 ―The older son was angry and would not go in to the party. So
his father went out and begged him to come in. 29 But he said to his
father, ‗Look, for all these years I have worked like a slave for you.
I have always done what you told me to do, and you never gave me
even a young goat for a party with my friends. 30 But then this son
of yours comes home after wasting your money on prostitutes, and
you kill the best calf for him!‘
31 ―His father said to him, ‗Oh, my son, you are always with
me, and everything I have is yours. 32 But this was a day to be
happy and celebrate. Your brother was dead, but now he is alive.
He was lost, but now he is found.‘‖
Psalm 103:1-13
A song of David.
103 My soul, praise the LORD!
Every part of me, praise his holy name!
2 My soul, praise the LORD
and never forget how kind he is!
3 He forgives all our sins
and heals all our sicknesses.
4 He saves us from the grave,
and he gives us love and compassion.
5 He gives us plenty of good things.
He makes us young again,
like an eagle that grows new feathers.
6 The LORD does what is fair.
He brings justice to all who have been hurt by others.
7 He taught his laws to Moses.
He let Israel see the powerful things he can do.
8 The LORD is kind and merciful.
He is patient and full of love.
9 He does not always criticize.
He does not stay angry with us forever.
10 We sinned against him,
but he didn‘t give us the punishment we deserved.
11 His love for his followers is
as high above us as heaven is above the earth.
12 And he has taken our sins
as far away from us as the east is from the west.
13 The LORD is as kind to his followers
as a father is to his children.

  • 5. 1. Full many shall come from the east and the west And sit at the feast of salvation, With Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob the blest, Obeying the Lord‘s invitation. Have mercy upon us, O Jesus! 2. But they who have always resisted His grace And on their own virtue depended Shall then be condemned and cast out from His face, Eternally lost and unfriended. Have mercy upon us, O Jesus! 3. May we too give heed when our Savior doth call In accents persuasive and tender, And may we be guests at His feast, one and all, Our praise and obeisance to render. Have mercy upon us, O Jesus! 4. Oh, that we the throng of the ransomed may swell, To whom He hath granted remission! God graciously make us in heaven to dwell And save us from endless perdition. Have mercy upon us, O Jesus! 5. God grant that I may of His infinite love Remain in His merciful keeping And sit with the King at His table above When here in the grave I am sleeping. Have mercy upon us, O Jesus! 6. Then ended will be, like a dream that is past, All trial and trouble and sorrow; All questions and doubts will be answered at last, When dawneth eternity‘s morrow. Have mercy upon us, O Jesus! 7. Then Heaven will ring with an anthem more grand Than ever on earth was recorded, When all of the saved shall receive at His hand The crown to the victors awarded. Have mercy upon us, O Jesus!

  • 7. Proverbs 9:1-10 Wisdom’s Feast 9 Wisdom has built her house, she has hewn her seven pillars. 2 She has slaughtered her animals, she has mixed her wine, she has also set her table. 3 She has sent out her servant-girls, she calls from the highest places in the town, 4 ―You that are simple, turn in here!‖ To those without sense she says, 5 ―Come, eat of my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed. 6 Lay aside immaturity,[a] and live, and walk in the way of insight.‖ General Maxims 7 Whoever corrects a scoffer wins abuse; whoever rebukes the wicked gets hurt. 8 A scoffer who is rebuked will only hate you; the wise, when rebuked, will love you. 9 Give instruction[b] to the wise, and they will become wiser still; teach the righteous and they will gain in learning. 10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.
  • 8. Ephesians 2:13-22 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. 14 For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us. 15 He has abolished the law with its commandments and ordinances, that he might create in himself one new humanity in place of the two, thus making peace, 16 and might reconcile both groups to God in one body[a] through the cross, thus putting to death that hostility through it.[b] 17 So he came and proclaimed peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near; 18 for through him both of us have access in one Spirit to the Father. 19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God,20 built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone.[c] 21 In him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; 22 in whom you also are built together spiritually[d] into a dwelling place for God.
  • 9. 1 John 3:13-18 13 Do not be astonished, brothers and sisters,[a] that the world hates you.14 We know that we have passed from death to life because we love one another. Whoever does not love abides in death. 15 All who hate a brother or sister[b] are murderers, and you know that murderers do not have eternal life abiding in them. 16 We know love by this, that he laid down his life for us—and we ought to lay down our lives for one another. 17 How does God‘s love abide in anyone who has the world‘s goods and sees a brother or sister[c] in need and yet refuses help? 18 Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action.
  • 10. Luke 14:15-24 The Parable of the Great Dinner 15 One of the dinner guests, on hearing this, said to him, ―Blessed is anyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!‖ 16 Then Jesus[a] said to him, ―Someone gave a great dinner and invited many. 17 At the time for the dinner he sent his slave to say to those who had been invited, ‗Come; for everything is ready now.‘ 18 But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‗I have bought a piece of land, and I must go out and see it; please accept my regrets.‘ 19 Another said, ‗I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to try them out; please accept my regrets.‘ 20 Another said, ‗I have just been married, and therefore I cannot come.‘ 21 So the slave returned and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and said to his slave, ‗Go out at once into the streets and lanes of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.‘ 22 And the slave said, ‗Sir, what you ordered has been done, and there is still room.‘ 23 Then the master said to the slave, ‗Go out into the roads and lanes, and compel people to come in, so that my house may be filled. 24 For I tell you,[b] none of those who were invited will taste my dinner.‘‖
  • 11. Psalm 34:12-22 12 Which of you desires life, and covets many days to enjoy good? 13 Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceit. 14 Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it. 15 The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their cry. 16 The face of the LORD is against evildoers, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth. 17 When the righteous cry for help, the LORD hears, and rescues them from all their troubles. 18 The LORD is near to the brokenhearted, and saves the crushed in spirit. 19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD rescues them from them all. 20 He keeps all their bones; not one of them will be broken. 21 Evil brings death to the wicked, and those who hate the righteous will be condemned. 22 The LORD redeems the life of his servants; none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.
  • 12. SECOND SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY Proverbs 9:1–10 Ephesians 2:13–22 or 1 John 3:13–18 Luke 14:15–24 The Gospel Call Goes Out to All Wisdom has issued an invitation to the divine feast: ―Come, eat of my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed. Leave your simple ways, and live, and walk in the way of insight‖ (Prov. 9:5– 6). This is the call of the Spirit of Christ to believe the Gospel and to receive His saving gifts in the Holy Supper. Many make excuses and reject this invitation, even as the Jews did in the days of Jesus, yet the Master‘s house will be filled. The Gospel call therefore goes out to the lowly and despised, into the highways, even to all the Gentiles (Luke 14:15–24). For ―you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ‖ (Eph. 2:13–22). In Christ, believing Jews and Gentiles are no longer strangers but fellow members of the household of God. The enmity of class and race is put to death through the cross. Having been reconciled in the one Body of Christ, we are enabled to love one another (1 John 3:13–18) as we await the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom which will have no end.

  • 14. Micah 7:18-20; 1 Timothy 1:12-17; 1 Peter 5:6-11; Luke 15:1- 10; Luke 15:11-32; Psalm 103:1-13 Micah 7:18-20 Praise for the Lord 18 There is no God like you. You take away people‘s guilt. God will forgive his people who survive. He will not stay angry with them forever, because he enjoys being kind. 19 He will come back and comfort us again. He will throw all our sins into the deep sea. 20 God, please be true to Jacob. Be kind and loyal to Abraham,[a] as you promised our ancestors long ago. 1 Timothy 1:12-17 Thanks for God‘s Mercy 12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord because he trusted me and gave me this work of serving him. He gives me strength. 13 In the past I insulted Christ. As a proud and violent man, I persecuted his people. But God gave me mercy because I did not know what I was doing. I did that before I became a believer. 14 But our Lord gave me a full measure of his grace. And with that grace came the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 15 Here is a true statement that should be accepted without question: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, and I am the worst of them. 16 But I was given mercy so that in me Christ Jesus could show that he has patience without limit. Christ showed his patience with me, the worst of all sinners. He wanted me to be an example for those who would believe in him and have eternal life.17 Honor and glory to the King who rules forever. He cannot be destroyed and cannot be seen. Honor and glory forever and ever to the only God. Amen. 1 Peter 5:6-11 6 So be humble under God‘s powerful hand. Then he will lift you up when the right time comes. 7 Give all your worries to him, because he cares for you. 8 Control yourselves and be careful! The devil is your enemy, and he goes around like a roaring lion looking for someone to attack and eat. 9 Refuse to follow the devil. Stand strong in your faith. You know that your brothers and sisters all over the world are having the same sufferings that you have. 10 Yes, you will suffer for a short time. But after that, God will make everything right. He will make you strong. He will support you and keep you from falling. He is the God who gives all grace. He chose you to share in his glory in Christ. That glory will continue forever. 11 All power is his forever. Amen. Luke 15:1-10 Joy in Heaven 15 Many tax collectors and sinners came to listen to Jesus. 2 Then the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to complain, ―Look, this man[a] welcomes sinners and even eats with them!‖ 3 Then Jesus told them this story: 4 ―Suppose one of you has 100 sheep, but one of them gets lost. What will you do? You will leave the other 99 sheep there in the field and go out and look for the lost sheep. You will continue to search for it until you find it. 5 And when you find it, you will be very happy. You will carry it 6 home, go to your friends and neighbors and say to them, ‗Be happy with me because I found my lost sheep!‘ 7 In the same way, I tell you, heaven is a happy place when one sinner decides to change. There is more joy for that one sinner than for 99 good people who don‘t need to change. 8 ―Suppose a woman has ten silver coins,[b] but she loses one of them. She will take a light and clean the house. She will look carefully for the coin until she finds it. 9 And when she finds it, she will call her friends and neighbors and say to them, ‗Be happy with me because I have found the coin that I lost!‘ 10 In the same way, it‘s a happy time for the angels of God when one sinner decides to change.‖ Luke 15:11-32 Story About Two Sons 11 Then Jesus said, ―There was a man who had two sons. 12 The younger son said to his father, ‗Give me now the part of your property that I am supposed to receive someday.‘ So the father divided his wealth between his two sons. 13 ―A few days later the younger son gathered up all that he had and left. He traveled far away to another country, and there he wasted his money living like a fool. 14 After he spent everything he had, there was a terrible famine throughout the country. He was hungry and needed money. 15 So he went and got a job with one of the people who lived there. The man sent him into the fields to feed pigs.16 He was so hungry that he wanted to eat the food the pigs were eating. But no one gave him anything. 17 ―The son realized that he had been very foolish. He thought, ‗All my father‘s hired workers have plenty of food. But here I am, almost dead because I have nothing to eat. 18 I will leave and go to my father. I will say to him: Father, I have sinned against God and have done wrong to you. 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son. But let me be like one of your hired workers.‘ 20 So he left and went to his father. The Younger Son Returns ―While the son was still a long way off, his father saw him coming and felt sorry for him. So he ran to him and hugged and kissed him. 21 The son said, ‗Father, I have sinned against God and have done wrong to you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.‘ 22 ―But the father said to his servants, ‗Hurry! Bring the best clothes and put them on him. Also, put a ring on his finger and good sandals on his feet. 23 And bring our best calf and kill it so that we can celebrate with plenty to eat. 24 My son was dead, but now he is alive again! He was lost, but now he is found!‘ So they began to have a party. The Older Son Complains 25 ―The older son had been out in the field. When he came near the house, he heard the sound of music and dancing. 26 So he called to one of the servant boys and asked, ‗What does all this mean?‘27 The boy said, ‗Your brother has come back, and your father killed the best calf to eat. He is happy because he has his son back safe and sound.‘ 28 ―The older son was angry and would not go in to the party. So his father went out and begged him to come in. 29 But he said to his father, ‗Look, for all these years I have worked like a slave for you. I have always done what you told me to do, and you never gave me even a young goat for a party with my friends. 30 But then this son of yours comes home after wasting your money on prostitutes, and you kill the best calf for him!‘ 31 ―His father said to him, ‗Oh, my son, you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. 32 But this was a day to be happy and celebrate. Your brother was dead, but now he is alive. He was lost, but now he is found.‘‖ Psalm 103:1-13 A song of David. 103 My soul, praise the LORD! Every part of me, praise his holy name! 2 My soul, praise the LORD and never forget how kind he is! 3 He forgives all our sins and heals all our sicknesses. 4 He saves us from the grave, and he gives us love and compassion. 5 He gives us plenty of good things. He makes us young again, like an eagle that grows new feathers. 10 We sinned against him, but he didn‘t give us the punishment we deserved. 11 His love for his followers is as high above us as heaven is above the earth. 12 And he has taken our sins as far away from us as the east is from the west. 13 The LORD is as kind to his followers as a father is to his children.
