6. The three job sectors…
Primary sector jobs: obtain or process natural products
Secondary sector jobs transform natural products into
manufactured products
Tertiary sector jobs provide a service
7. Primary Sector
The primary sector obtain or process natural products.
These natural resources can come from livestock, crops, the sea
or from the Earth.
These jobs include:
Livestock Farmer
Fisherman
Arable Farmer
Miner
8. Arable Farming
Arable farmers are farmers who grow crops.
Once farmed, crops are used for food and other products. This is
important.
Dry crops, like olive trees, wheat and grapes only need rainwater
to grow and can grow in poor soil (Andalucía!)
Irrigated crops, like tomatoes, potatoes and rice need a form of
watering called ‘irrigation’ to grow. The farmers do this.
10. Livestock Farming
Livestock farmers rear animals such as cows, pigs, sheep and
chickens.
Rear (verb) to look after
animals
From these animals, we get products like meat, milk or skins.
Intensive farming means the animals live and eat in small spaces.
Free-range farming means the animals live outside and have space to
move and eat grass.

natural products into other things.
So natural products like flour or wood are farmed by
farmers and then used by secondary sector jobs to make
into products.
This can be done by craft or by industry.
14. Industrial Workers
Industrial workers mass-produce products.
Mass-production is very quick and makes lots of the same thing.
This usually happens in factories using machines.
Cake Factory
Toy Factory
15. Tertiary Sector: provides a service
Many people have jobs that provide a service.
We can classify these jobs into different groups like: education,
health care, tourism, transport and retail.

a job.
In English, tell your partner what job
your adult has and consider which
sector that job is in.
