This is a 'net zero,' economic burden to municipalities seeking to reverse the urban blight and decay inherent to most rust belt inner cities. I poses a partnership between private and public sectors that is more expansive and integrated. The SEI is, in fact, closer in structure to the Japanese, 'Keiretsu,' that leveraged Japan into a wold economic power. Look elsewhere on slideshare for a one slide presentation of: The Social Keiretsu.
3. Who We Are … Our Mission: Community Economic Development: We build strong communities …one business at a time. MVS identifies a community need, finds a successful business model to fill that need and then provides the training, mentoring, and financing that guarantees local ownership by people who live and work in the neighborhood..

Good ______, Thank You for this opportunity to present our strategic vision. (click) MicroVenture Support is a 501, C, 3 non profit corporation. Our principal offices are located here in Brookland in NE Washington, DC.. Our reason for being here today is that, we are seeking partners in an innovative, sustainable, and green initiative. We intend to prove conclusively that good environmental practice is also good business, and for bringing jobs and economic stability to the communities and neighborhoods of our district. This is a short presentation about 20 min plus Q/A If you would please note your questions and hold them until the end of the presentation.
(click) We use the term “sustainable” because we mean it in every sense of the word. It is sustainable because we will require no ongoing economic support from any outside entity. We will be economically sustainable. Sustainable because we will provide positive cash flow and taxes to our community, and finally, sustainable because economic justice is the foundation for social justice. I quote here, the great Mahatma Gandi upon whose work Dr. King founded his non-violent philosophy. Gandi said, “Poverty is the worst possible form of violence”
(click) MVS started in the International Development field, our intent is to achieve social justice through economic justice. we focused on support for the small growing business. (click) We have worked in both North and sub Saharan Africa, The Philippines, and in India. (click) However, the more we looked at Washington DC, the more we realized the plight of our communities particularly here in the neighborhoods of the city, where unemployment reaches 30 to 40%. (click) So, in addition to our non profit we also are co founders and active participants in The National Capital Jobs Coalition. This is reflective of our mission of economic and social justice. As a Veteran (USMC 57 ’-62’) we have allied with NACV. It should surprise none of us to know that many of the unemployed are veterans. We will provide priority access and special programs to returning warriors and former military vets .
(click) DC needs new job and new industry. The old DC job source of the Federal Government is gone. The computer has taken over much of the work being done by the old working class. We need new and green industry to replace those lost jobs and create new ones. This program begins that process. (click) This is a so called, jobless recovery. There are few jobs except for dead end, no benefit, minimum wage jobs. Decent, living wage jobs with a future are what we need. This program will deliver those jobs. (click) We plan to operate in the neighborhoods, growing local fresh food where it is needed. (click) Once in-place DC-SEI will be self-funding and revenue generating. (click) there will be no net annual cost to our city.
(click). Family Fish Farms is a program of MVS. Family Fish Farms is our plan for bringing jobs and much needed revenue back inside the beltway. Especially in these times of budget deficits. (click) Ours is a high efficiency, natural process Urban Farming methodology producing large quantities of healthy, fresh, protein and garden vegetables grown locally by local small businesses. (click) It is clear to all who ponder such matters that new directions and innovative ideas will be needed to solve the new challenges facing our cities, our institutions, and our people. We assert that our approach to Urban Farming is emblematic of such innovation and initiative
(click) The triple bottom line concept is generally attributed to john Elkington, who used the term in his 1998 book: Cannibals with forks: The triple bottom line of 21 st Century Business. As many of you will know, It is presently applied to Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development. They are in order: (click) Socially Responsible … the business should conform to enlightened cultural and social norms. (click) Economically Viable the business should be profitable (click) Environmentally Sound the business should not degrade the environment (Familiiy Fish Farms effectively addresses three pressing issues facing our city: Economic … jobs and revenue, social, decent fresh food to our neighborhoods, and environmental, by cutting pollution and saving fresh water.
(click) We all know the dismal, even horrific unemployment issues facing our communities and neighborhoods … reaching 30% and more among some populations. We must find productive employment opportunities … not just dead end jobs, but real decent paying work. (click) We also know about the enormous budget deficits hitting all cities and municipalities. It is the same everywhere but worse here because of the structural unemployment here in the district. (click) There are Two DC ’s … We need NEW industry, not where jobs are stolen from one sector and called new jobs, but really NEW GREEN jobs with a future. We believe we have an answer to that problem. When there are no jobs we have to find a solution.
(click) Urban Farming is the future of food production and distribution. We simply cannot as a society, afford the costs of an energy intensive centralized food model. Local food is the future. (click) Environmental costs and overall impact are central to our thinking and you will both hear and see these same issues repeated throughout our presentation today. RAS, or re-circulating aquaculture systems totally eliminates the need for commercial fertilizer. The spring run-off from farms is a major cause of pollution in our ponds, lakes, streams, rivers and, of course, The Bay. (click) Commercial farming uses millions of gallons of water to produce their crops. We use virtually none. (click) Since all food is locally grown, no energy overhead in expensive refined petrochemicals for transportation is necessary. (click) Finally, if we count the value chain from growing, to packaging, to sales, etc … a fully evolved urban farming market will create hundreds if not thousands of new green jobs and a new green industry. There will be no job loss, only net job gains.
There is nothing so powerful as ideal whose time has come. So it is with RAS technology. Here is a recent MSNBC segment by Ann Thompson, their environmental reporter…(click arrow)
It makes no sense to grow food in CA or Mexico and ship it to Washington, DC and other urban centers across the country. We hope that before we are finished here this morning, you will agree, as do we, that Urban Farming is the future of food. Our well researched approach addresses a number of pressing problems faced by our planet …. (click) FERTILIZER … Agricultural fertilizer is a principal cause of the pollution in our streams, rivers, and in the Chesapeake. We neither need, nor use any form of fertilizer that stresses the environment. … EVER! (click) WATER! Commercial farming requires millions of gallons of clean water. WE DO NOT Because we bio filter and digest our effluent the water is constantly recycled. Except for flushing of filters and normal evaporation we consume only a fraction of a percent of our water. (click) FRESH UNADULTERATED FOOD … FFF will never use animal protein in its feed, we do not need to use hormones to accelerate growth, we have no reason use antibiotics. Why because we have a closed loop system. We will have complete control over the content of our food (click) In addition to the rest, FFF will become a beacon of The New Urban Green Industry and we believe that The Arboretum is the supremely logical place to do just that.
… .This is a functional or a systems model of a RAS system. Inputs to the system are: food, water, power, seeds and fingerlings The left hand side of the graphic shows the Fish Production subsystem. The right hand side is the vegetable Production Subsystem In the middle are the pumps, filters, and digesters that remove any impurities from the water. Water in the tanks if fully filtered every three hours. 03/05/12 http://www.microfranchisesolutions.com
This is an exploded parts diagram of a four tank system. Note the various component parts of the system. This shows the same system shown previously except it lays out individual sub systems and component parts.
(click) RAS is a high efficiency, Fish friendly, and totally secure food production system. (click) Common pond aquaculture will produce 1 lb of fish protein per 300 gal. of water (click) Intensive aquaponics used in a RAS will produce 1 lb of fish per gal of water (click) Regarding legitimate concerns about the treatment feedstock animals in commercial operations, RAS creates the exact opposite environment producing a virtually stress free ecology. (click) Free breathing is one stressor that is totally removed since the water is oxygenated as it also promotes growth (click) Fish are regularly sized so the aggressive larger fish are upgraded leaving less food competition and also promoting growth (click) Finally, all water in all tanks is fully exchanged every three hours leaving a clear, clean living environment for the fish. (click) RAS is biologically and environmentally secure (click) Since RAS is closed loop system, there is virtually no possibility of outside or, air borne bacteria invasion, hence, no antibiotics are needed or used. (click) The food production system is closed to the outside and is physically secure.
This is our basic design. We plan to build hundreds of these in and/or around urban centers across the country. The RAS-1 It is built upon a very strong foundation of recycled shipping containers they are readily available, incredibly strong, and inexpensive. Everything is modular and bolt-on for ease of assembly and can be pre fabricated and assembled on site. This results in a base unit that is expandable at reasonable cost (we estimate the cost of construction, exclusive of land and including all fixtures and equipment at under $100K) Production can be effectively doubled by internal expansion within the same unit shell. Other larger units including the addition of retail and educational space are available.
(click) (click) RAS produces both restaurant grade vegetables and high-quality seafood. (click) This list of seafood contains both fresh and salt water varieties, as well as, shellfish and bivalves. The technology differ a bit for the bivalves (trays instead of tanks) and salinity and trace minerals need to be added for certain salt water varieties. These are straight forward process variations and well within the ability of today ’s technology. More varieties are being added so the list keeps growing. (click) The vegetable list continues to grow as well and we expect tubers to be added soon.
(click) RAS is really nothing more than taking simple life processes and combining them (with a little help from us) to solve a number of mankind ’s pressing problems. (click) RAS also solves many of the problems of traditional farming avoiding drought and weather while producing a year round 12 month growing cycle. (click) If we combine RAS with a lesson from modern product marketing and vertically integrate the value chain, We essentially change the rules of the distribution game. (click) we can integrate the elements of marketing (price, place, product, and promotion) and through that the potential of total market dominance. Finally, by establishing all product under one brand and by controlling the distribution and merchandising, we become vertically integrated from farm to retail and back. We will own the marketplace.
How do we engage both social and investment capital? We believe the SVIV (social venture investment vehicle) provides a venue for both social and economic investors. (click) The public sector, foundations, and other civil society organizations can provide Donor funding, (click) while capital investment can be accommodated as well. (click) Donor funds are used to invest in human capital (click) while traditional investment in conventional depreciable assets can also be accepted. The result is a hybrid social capital structure that can be collateralized at some point in the future. (click) The Donor receives a return in social capital and (click) the investor receives a fair return on their investment as well
