2. PRINCIPLE-1
LEADERS ARE BORN AS WELL AS MADE
“leaders aren’t born, they are made”
-Vince Lombardi
Ability of leadership consists of skills and traits.
“Skills” can be learnt and mastered eg. Organizational
skills, delegation, discipline are all learnable skills.
Traits can only be gradually imbibed. People are born
with some traits eg. Tact and diplomacy, charisma, desire
to learn, creativity.
You have to give yourself time. Don’t attempt to become
a great leader overnight.
Events and challenges throw up great leaders. Second
world war produced great military and political leaders like
Winston Churchill, Eisenhower, Montgomery.
Training programs mentoring and books help in
becoming good leaders.
3. PRINCIPLE-2
“Most pathetic person is someone who has sight but has no
vision” - Hellen Keller
Vision is fundamental to leadership.
Vision is not a dream but a reality which needs to come
into existence.
Vision of the leader gives a sense of direction to the
organization.
Compelling reason of the leader needs to be put in
words, which then becomes the organizational goal and
vision.
Vision should be short. Google’s vision is “ To provide
access to the worlds information in one click”-Only ten
words.
Vision must be backed by hard work to accomplish it.
4. PRINCIPLE-3
LIVE ,THINK AND ACT LIKE A LEADER
“Anyone who has never made a mistake, has never tried
something new” - Albert Einstein
Look at yourself in a mirror everyday and imagine
yourself as a leader.
You must bring change and the first change must be in
you-To think you are a leader.
If you have an idea then speak about it.
Capture the imagination of others by thinking different.
You will waste resources if you do not act on your
thoughts. Indian army took forty years to make their full
sleeves shirts(sleeves folded) into half sleeves.
They could have saved two million meter cloth every
year, that is the power of action.
5. PRINCIPLE-4
COMMUNICATION-AN ART YOU MUST LEARN
“great speakers are not born, they are trained”
-Dale Carnegie
Content is the king. So work and collect material on what
you are going to speak.
Constantly update about your own field, specialization, &
domain.
Do your home work. prepare all details before a meeting.
Structure your thoughts, break each part in to sub parts
till things are crystal clear to you.
Be brief and speak with conviction. You should sound
genuine.
Add a dash of humor. It can work wonders.
Practice, practice and practice – rehearsing pays.
6. PRINCIPLE-5
PREGNANT MINDS-CREATIVITY
“Imagination is more important than knowledge”
- Albert Einstein
Conceive, nurture, deliver- that’s what a pregnant mind
does.
Innovation need not to be totally a new idea.
Innovation is simply something different from others.
Creativity is a part of life and not an engineered process.
So think you are creative.
Metaphoric thinking brings creativity. This is an analogy
to explain an idea by use of a word. Eg.“I slept like a log”
Broaden your experience by reading on different subjects
and be prepared to make mistakes.
New ideas always have fog around it.
7. PRINCIPLE-6
SENSE OF JUDGMENT IS VERY IMPORTANT
Good judgment comes from experience, experience comes from
bad judgment. -Bob Packwood
A leader needs to judge and gauge, people, situations
and problems.
For a good leader like a pilot, judgment is more
important than controlling instruments.
Judging a person is a most important task of a leader and
the most difficult one.
Humans are complex creatures with many masks, there
fore difficult to judge.
Assess a complex situation on your gut instinct.Over
analysis sometimes leads to paralysis.
Political and business decisions usually depend upon
appreciation and judgment.
8. PRINCIPLE-7
WIT AND HUMOR
“Without humor you cannot run a sweet shop, let alone a
nation” -John Buchan
Humor gives you a pleasant disposition and costs you
nothing.
Humor should be used with caution. Never at someone
else’s cost.
Bosses having sense of humor are liked by others.
Must use humor keeping in mind the situation.
Humor and wit(intelligence) go hand in hand and are a
powerful tool for success. Akbar-Birbal stories are full of wit
and humor – yet convey great thoughts .
Humor must be cleverly used in presentations and
discussions.
9. PRINCIPLE-8
NO POLITICS PLEASE
“In war you can be killed only once, in politics many times”
- Sir Winston Churchill
Politics in the organization is a leadership function.
It refers to the manipulation of people, power, position to
secure promotions & favors.
In the process you piss off many people, hurt some and
also make some enemies.
Politics sinks not only people but also organizations.
If you have politics, people in your organization will spend
more time covering their ass rather than working.
Politics always starts from top and the leader is totally
responsible for it.
You have to do nothing as a leader not to play politics!
Just done play politics.
