2. WHAT IS LANGUAGE?
Language is the most important aspects in the life of all beings.
We use language to express inner thought and emotions, make sense of
complex and abstract thought, to learn to communicate with others, to fulfil
our wants and need, as well as to establish rules and maintain our culture.
3. LANGUAGE ACCORDING TO RICHARDS:
According to him ,a poet writes to communicate and language is the
means of that communication.
Language is made of words, and hence a study of words is all
important if we are to understand the meaning of a work of art.
To him, language of poetry is purely emotive, in its original primitive state.
Words in poetry have an emotive value, and the figurative language used
by poets coveys those emotions effectively and forcefully.
4. WHAT IS FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE?
Figurative language is the inclusive term for words that are used in ways
that depart conspicuously from their literal applications, so as to achieve
special meanings or effects.
Figurative language is used most often in poetry, but it is essential to all
literary genres, in VERSE or prose, as well as to ordinary discourse.
“Poetry is different from prose and needs a different attitude for right
understanding.”
Figurative language is usually divided in two broad classes:
Figures of thought
Figures of speech
5. VALUE OF FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE:
Poet use a figurative language, and this use of poetic figures poses a
number of difficult and interesting problems.
A proper understanding of poetry can be possible only when the demand
for accuracy and precision is combined with a recognition of the liberties
which are proper and value of figurative language.
