 Positive transition into higher education has a direct
impact on student retention (Boyle, Cater and Clark
2002)
 Transition to university can be a difficult and
unsettling experience for students entering an
unfamiliar domain (Byrne and Flood 2005. pg. 113)
 40% of students report that information about library
services is „very useful‟ and relevant to their decision
about going to university. (HEFCE 2010. p.8.)

 “Though I can and did present things in my undergraduate studies I am not sure
I am at the same level as other students, may be because my school did more
testing than presentation work”.
 “Don't just tell us how to use the library facilities - show us! Let us have a go.
Physical demonstrations are always more effective”.
 “I find IT easy and anything I don't know I'll pick up. I'm used to creative writing
so find academic writing difficult”.
 “I will probably need to be shown how exactly things should be referenced
properly”.

reading and online information but not familiar with e-Books and online learning

1. Variation in levels of IL competence at the time of coming to university
2. High self evaluation in terms of cognitive skills
3. Awareness of Information literacy and academic skill deficiencies
4. The library is the second most important source of information after the internet
5. Poor knowledge of library threshold concepts
6. Students are not familiar/confident in their use of scholarly information sources
7. Awareness of ethical uses of information but less so about citation tools
8. Blackboard is a black box for many students
9. A human face to library induction is highly valued

Prospective students deserve more than glossy
advertising prospectuses. A student experience of
university does not begin when they step onto
campus on the first day of their first university
year. Early relationship (knowledge based) between
student and university is very important in
preparing students for university life.

Information literacy and learning transition: what can we learn from first year undergraduates? - Samuel Nikoi

Poor knowledge of library threshold concepts 6. Students are not familiar/confident in their use of scholarly information sources 7. A student experience of university does not begin when they step onto campus on the first day of their first university year.
