A bit about you...
• How many of you work for institutions/organisations which deliver some form
of online learning?
• How many of you work for institutions/organisations have library staff whose
sole responsibility is supporting online learners?
• How many of you work for institutions/organisations which provide electronic
access to all the learning resources that their online learners may need?
• How many of you work for institutions/organisations which have robust
systems for communicating with online learners?
• How many of you can say (honestly!) that your online learners have an
equitable experience in terms of library skills and resources as your on-
campus learners?

We’re going to be talking about what we have done at the university of derby, but wanted to find out a bit about you.
If you answer yes to all the questions, we should swap places!

Delivery of online programmes originally in Faculties – moved to UDOL to provide a recognisable brand and identity.
Range of programmes across vocational, professional and scientific subject areas. Courses with most students, Nursing, Psychology, Business, but also courses in Law, Environmental Management, Education and Engineering.
Global reach with students from >100 countries

Trimester set up – makes providing the same service as on campus semester very difficult.
Interesting set up as courses developed by team based in Derby and then delivered by more than 300 dedicated online course tutors based worldwide

It’s fair to say that library support for UDOL was very difficult at first as we didn’t know what we would need from each other.
UDOL were not aware of what we could do and we were not sure what they would need. Not a reason to hold our hands up and step away, but work with each other to establish a new ‘normal’ library service for online
Academic Services Manager and Senior Academic Manager for UDOL had monthly meetings to find out what was needed from both sides and from there we were able to ‘educate’ UDOL in what we could do and this helped to raise our awareness of other ways that we could help.
At the same time we centralised our library enquiry service so enquiries from both on campus and UDOL students were answered by the same team. This team also incorporated our InFocus Service (off campus, but in focus) who formerly dealt with enquiries and postal loans from off campus students. Bring students together – centralised students helped to raise awareness and address common issues, e.g. navigation of website, guidance available and troubleshooting technical problems.

Some of the key initiatives…
LYL week - a week of sessions to support students as they are doing dissertations, refreshers (Long distance love - using our library resources off campus, Finding your perfect partner (or Which career is right for you), Declare your true intentions – how to write a literature review). Asked what we were providing for UDOL students. Used BB Collaborate to set up a VED – several iterations of this. We assessed and evaluated the timings of the sessions we offered and support evolved to deliver our current pattern, a webinar – students attended webinar (Making the most of your online library) and then could drop in to VEDs if they had any further questions or missed the webinar. February 2015 26 students attended webinar and then 6 attended VEDs. February 2016 10 students for webinar. 5 for VED.
Support services induction (Paula's group) (sharing of experience) – the work that we did for LYL week and the support that we offered made UDOL gather together other support services (Careers, Study Skills, Student Wellbeing) for induction sessions using our model of best practice
PDP module March 2014 joint UDOL, careers and library services project to author a support resource that could help tutors and students develop digital literacy skills. Team of three of us worked to produce content and activities/tasks for a unit on the UDOL portal including Using Google Scholar, Open Access Resources, Evaluating information. The resource will sit outside of modules but tutors can use the URLs to link into their modules as and when they need the information.
E-books report – Impetus was the provision of e-textbooks to University of Derby students as part of a small-scale project undertaken by the School of Law and Criminology. The texts were bought through Pearson and used VitalSource as the platform provider. UDOL took this on in early 2014 looking at Pearson to author bespoke texts. As library staff we were invited to attend demos and subsequently asked to produce a report on how this provision might be managed at a university level. A further example of the changing relationship and our involvement at the developmental stage of projects.
Budget – first two years of operation no dedicated budget for library resources. Back to point about not really knowing what was needed. 2013/14 dedicated budget money from faculty budgets, e-books, no on going subs

Videos – As programmes were expanding we wanted to address student library induction (for on campus students, library tours – clearly no equivalent for online). We also wanted to ensure that we could create reusable generic resources that were not subject specific. At same time University invested in Panopto which gave Subject Librarians the ability to create a series of short generic induction videos for UDOL students (which are also applicable to on campus students.) SLs paired up to produce either a video or deliver a webinar/VED. The videos are embedded within the UDOL student portal (using Kaltura Media Gallery) and available to all students via the VLE. Relationships with TEL as part of LE to make sure that our videos were part of the university wide video production project. Videos promoted at programme committee meetings and pleasantly surprised at number of on campus programme leaders who also wanted to embed them in their modules.
Shift from translating on campus to UDOL to producing something for UDOL which was then taken up by on campus.
Staff induction module – asked to provide content for a staff module about using library services and resources. What was really pleasing to see was that the module was a 7 hour module and one hour of that was dedicated to library services. Raising awareness with staff and through them getting to the students
UDOL Library Survey - between June 22nd and July 5th 2015, UDOL students were surveyed on their use of, and satisfaction with, Library services and resources. There were questions about the library in general UDOL survey, but we wanted to dig a bit deeper. The fact that eventually we were able to have a separate survey again is indicative of how we now work together. We’ve been asked to do it again this year. The survey was online with a link being emailed to over 3200 UDOL, who were eligible to participate. The survey was conducted using SurveyMonkey and we had 162 student responses (5% response rate)

Library Plus is concerning.
Indicator of videos focussing on induction and not the more advanced research side looking at our resources. Is this indicative of research skills. They can use what they are directed to, but not own research.
LUCY
SCONUL Access – not too concerned about as students may not be eligible

The library has support and guidance in many different forms from the online guides (LibGuides) through to webinars and VEDs. Webinars and group sessions were the least preferred methods according to this survey but it is important to remember that the webinars and group sessions that we do are part of a wider package of support.
There were two comments that suggested that a recorded webinar would be useful. A polished version of one of our webinars is in progress and a recording of one of our previous webinars is available. We will also be working on increasing the number of videos about our resources and services that are available.
Face to face is still a important priority for UDOL. Is it a case of the technology meaning it is not as straightforward as they would like.

SLs for H&SC and Business to work out why students in these areas are not as happy as others!
UDOL Academic Conference in January 2016- Sir John Daniel, former VC of the OU said that when designing programmes you have to think about whether it will work for the online learner and that’s the question that we are now asking ourselves when developing services and support mechanisms.
