Snapshot of Asia 2014
1. SNAPSHOT OF ASIA
2014
A mashup of research on business trends
and people who are doing cool stuff.
“Whether you’re doing business in Asia currently or thinking about it for the future,
the following is intended to give you a flavour of some of the insane trends that are
going on in our part of the world.
I have picked some interesting gems from a dozen ‘grown up’ research documents
including historical data and future gazing. All the reports are made available at the
end. It does not claim to be anything other then stuff that made me go ‘Really?!’.
The people I’ve featured are people that I’ve met with or who have been recom-mended
to me as ‘doing cool stuff & making things happen’. The criteria was no
more complex then that, so if you think I’ve missed someone then do please con-nect
with me and connect me to them.
If you find any of this interesting do please share it with anyone and everyone.
And, if you haven’t signed up to my newsletter of ‘random business stuff and inter-esting
people’ then do so now. Every time someone subscribes it automatically

Redistribution of the workforce
The world’s population is projected to reach 8 billion by 2025. But this
isn’t uniform growth - the population in some countries is slowing or
has stalled, while in others it’s booming. This, combined with variances
in the birth rate from region to region is transforming the world map of
the working-age population. By 2020, the median age will be 43 in
Europe, 38 in China and just 20 in Africa.
This effectively means a massive redistribution of the world’s workforce.
Within two generations, China will have lost 150 million workers and
India will have gained 317 million. The working-age population has
already peaked in South Korea, but has been falling for the past
decade in Germany.

shallow, online shopping accounted for less than 1% of total retail

As it stands, Asia, excluding Japan, will have 1 billion smartphone
users by 2015.
