Designing the Virtual Mobility Learning
Hub for Higher Education in Europe
Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership (2017 - 2020)

Project objectives:
1. Enhance the uptake of Open Virtual Mobility by improving VM
skills of educators and students.

2. Create a European OpenVM Learning Hub for achievement,
assessment and recognition of VM skills.

3. Develop a set of innovative tools and methods to enhance
achievement, assessment and recognition of VM skills.
What are we working on?
What is virtual mobility?
Virtual mobility creates accessible, flexible, scalable and cost-
effective solutions for all types of curricula, especially in
collaborative curricula. (…) Essential elements (of VM) are:
• an institutional agreement
• a course catalogue with pre-assessed and recognised
online courses or learning activities
• a student application form
• a learning agreement
• transcript of records

Opening virtual mobility
Different forms of Virtual Mobility on a continuum from formalised to informal VM:
• Scalability. Different forms of VM can engage more students
as there are less barriers for (virtual) mobility. 

• Flexibility. Informal VM can be applied in a wider variety of
contexts and can enhance the uptake of formal VM. 

• Collaboration. Informal VM fosters collaborative learning
spaces and communities of learning.

Your experiences with VM
OpenVM Learning Hub
Open Virtual Mobility Learning Hub comprises:
VM Skills - a description of virtual mobility skills including alignment to existing competency
frameworks in a competency directory (O3); this includes VM e-assessment - different forms of
digital self-/assessment including digital evidence (such as testimonials, digital assets, e-
portfolios, crowd evidencing) applied as elements of open credentials and supporting open,
evidence-based assessment (O4); 

VM Open Credentials - digital recognition of VM skills based on current forms of open digital
credentials such as Open Badges and Blockcerts (O5);

VM Learning - User Generated Content, Open Educational Resources and other forms of
Open Content to support learning about VM and developing VM Skills (O6); this includes also
the VM Activities - Open Learning Activities including learning in and through MOOCs, peer-to-
peer activities, virtual/blended collaborations (O6);

VM Market / Connections - finding cooperation partners for VM activities supported by such
tools as the Matching Tool including matching for collaboration of groups (O3);

  • 3. Project objectives: 1. Enhance the uptake of Open Virtual Mobility by improving VM skills of educators and students. 2. Create a European OpenVM Learning Hub for achievement, assessment and recognition of VM skills. 3. Develop a set of innovative tools and methods to enhance achievement, assessment and recognition of VM skills.

  • 5. What is virtual mobility? Virtual mobility creates accessible, flexible, scalable and cost- effective solutions for all types of curricula, especially in collaborative curricula.   • 7. Opening virtual mobility Different forms of Virtual Mobility on a continuum from formalised to informal VM:
  • 8. • Scalability. Different forms of VM can engage more students as there are less barriers for (virtual) mobility. • Flexibility. Informal VM can be applied in a wider variety of contexts and can enhance the uptake of formal VM. • Collaboration. Informal VM fosters collaborative learning spaces and communities of learning. Open Virtual Mobility Learning Hub comprises: VM Skills - a description of virtual mobility skills including alignment to existing competency frameworks in a competency directory (O3); this includes VM e-assessment - different forms of digital self-/assessment including digital evidence (such as testimonials, digital assets, e- portfolios, crowd evidencing) applied as elements of open credentials and supporting open, evidence-based assessment (O4); VM Open Credentials - digital recognition of VM skills based on current forms of open digital credentials such as Open Badges and Blockcerts (O5); VM Learning - User Generated Content, Open Educational Resources and other forms of Open Content to support learning about VM and developing VM Skills (O6); this includes also the VM Activities - Open Learning Activities including learning in and through MOOCs, peer-to- peer activities, virtual/blended collaborations (O6); VM Market / Connections - finding cooperation partners for VM activities supported by such tools as the Matching Tool including matching for collaboration of groups (O3);
