This document discusses an optimized switching strategy for a ripple-canceling boost converter. The strategy extends previous work on a hybrid switched-capacitor/interleaved boost converter that provided high voltage gain and canceled input current ripple at a preselected duty cycle. The new strategy proposes optimized switching for operating conditions at other duty cycle values. It quantifies the effect on voltage gain and input current ripple compared to conventional switching strategies, which is validated through hardware prototyping.

ABSTRACT
A hybrid switched-capacitor/interleaved boost converter able to provide a high voltage
gain and to cancel the input current ripple at a preselected duty cycle was recently presented in
the literature. This paper extends that work by proposing an optimized switching strategy for
operating conditions at other values of duty cycle. The switching strategy effect on the
converter’s voltage gain and input current ripple is quantified and compared against the
performance under the conventional switching strategy. The approach is validated in the
laboratory through hardware prototyping.

With the rising fuel cost, increasing demand of power and the concerns for global climate change, the use of clean energy make the connection of power electronics building bloc in the heart of the current research. The high output current applications make the parallel connection of modular inverters to be a solution for the use of low power building block inverters where the output power cannot be handled by a single inverter configuration. In this context, average-modeling using average phase–leg technique allows the n-parallel connected inverters to be analyzed accurately and rapidly without requiring the complexity of the full switched inverter topology. The obtained analytical solution along with the equivalent circuit model makes easier the design of the control loop. The analytical solution of the n-parallel connected inverters shows the impact of the line and grid impedance on the performance of the overall system. The impact of this coupling has to be investigated such that the main feature of paralleling inverters is guaranteed and that the inverter mode of operation will not be compromised. The main advantage of paralleling inverters can be lost for a certain coupling impedance considerations.

In the low voltage based renewable systems like PV and Fuel cell applications, the step-up of the output voltage to drive the loads is essential. For this, the integration of switched-capacitor (SC) units with the dc-ac converters will have the potential advantages like improved efficiency, optimal switching devices, small size of passive elements (L and C) as compared with traditional two-stage conversion system (dc/dc converter and dc/ac converter). This paper focuses on a new family of step-up multilevel inverter topologies with switched capacitor integration with dual input voltage sources. With the flexibility of 2 dc sources and switching capacitor circuits, four different topologies have been suggested in this paper with features of high voltage gain, reduced component count, reduced voltage stress and self-voltage balancing of the capacitor while achieving a higher number of levels. A detailed analysis of proposed multilevel inverters has been analyzed with the symmetrical and asymmetrical mode of operations and the associated gain, the number of levels, and other performance indices are presented. An in-depth study of all the topologies has been accomplished in this paper with several comparative studies in terms of components count, voltage gain and cost. The effectiveness and practicability of the suggested topology with 13 level output voltage has been explained by the experimental results obtained from a scale down prototype.

This paper deals with reactive power compensation and harmonics elimination inmedium-voltage industrial networks using a hybrid active power filter. It proposes a hybrid filter as a combination of a three-phase, two-level, voltage-source converter connected in parallel with the inductor of a shunt, single-tuned, passive filter. This topological structure greatly decreases the voltage and current stress over the elements of the active filter. Since the topology is composed of a single-tuned branch, the control algorithm also has to ensure sufficient filtering at other harmonic frequencies. We propose using a proportional-resonant, multiloop controller. Since the controller is implemented in a synchronous-reference frame, it allows us to use half the number of resonators, compared with the solution using proportional-integral controllers in the harmonic-reference frame. Theoretical analyses and simulation results obtained from an actual industrial network model in PSCAD verify the viability and effectiveness of the proposed hybrid filter. In addition, the simulation results are validated by a comparison with the results obtained from a real-time digital simulator.

This paper presents a new multilevel inverter topology with reduced active switches and total standing voltage. The proposed topology can generate a high number of voltage levels in the symmetric configuration. This topology intuitively generates positive and negative cycles without an additional H-bridge unit, which considerably reduces the total standing voltage of the inverter. A cascaded structure is developed from the proposed topology to create higher voltage levels. To show the novelty of the proposed topology, a thorough comparison between the available and the proposed topologies in terms of the number of switches, standing voltages, and dc-sources is presented. Furthermore, he power loss analysis is carried out for various load values. The feasibility of the proposed nine-level inverter is verified with simulation and experimental results.

A simplified space vector pulse-width modulation (SVPWM) for three-phase cascaded H-bridge (CHB) inverters is presented in this paper. Treating each unit as a three-level inverter and adopting serial calculation mode, a CHB inverter is modulated unit by unit using three-level SVPWM. Duty cycles of real sector are obtained by mapping duty cycles of sector 1, in which the calculation of three-level SVPWM is done. The process to implement multilevel SVPWM is simplified to the process to implement three-level SVPWM. By reusing FPGA chip resource which is used for the calculation of three-level SVPWM, the presented SVPWM can be easily adopted to a CHB inverter with different number of units, while the FPGA chip resource utilization is reduced significantly. In addition, the presented SVPWM provides an effective switching frequency higher than the switching frequency of IGBTs. Simulation and experimental results are provided to verify the feasibility of the presented SVPWM.

This paper deals with the design and performance analysis of a three-phase single stage solar photovoltaic integrated unified power quality conditioner (PV-UPQC). The PV-UPQC consists of a shunt and series connected voltage compensators connected back to back with common DC-link.The shunt compensator performs the dual function of extracting power from PV array apart from compensating for load current harmonics. An improved synchronous reference frame control based on moving average filter is used for extraction of load active current component for improved performance of the PVUPQC. The series compensator compensates for the grid side power quality problems such as grid voltage sags/swells. The compensator injects voltage in-phase/out of phase with point of common coupling (PCC) voltage during sag and swell conditions respectively. The proposed system combines both the benefits of clean energy generation along with improving power quality. The steady state and dynamic performance of the system are evaluated by simulating in Matlab-Simulink under a nonlinear load. The system performance is then verified using a scaled down laboratory prototype under a number of disturbances such as load unbalancing, PCC voltage sags/swells and irradiation variation.
