1. ‘Ready or Not’ Viewers
‘Ready or Not’ viewers are around fifteen and older, with the likelihood of interest dropping for people
not much older than 22 or 23. The viewers attend college or university, and therefore quite possibly a
more intelligent or intellectual audience who enjoy a film with some twists and turns. They enjoy
reading books, and music and television magazines. They are interested in spending a lot of time with
friends, often attending cinemas or getting together to watch something on Netflix, and are also avid
internet and social network users. This will allow them to keep up to date with friends the latest film
releases. The film does not contain nudity or violence, more strongly linked with a male audience, and
therefore we would say that fans of this film are both male and female. As the film would contain
elements of a more psychological thriller with some jumpy or scary moments, the viewers are fans of
thriller and horror films.
2. Target Audience
The target audience of our film (15 – 23) would be able to relate more to
the characters as they are of a similar age (16/17). The rating for our film
would be a 15 as there wouldn’t be any explicit language, nudity or
violence/gore which would put it into the 18 category, however there
would be some more jumpy and scary aspects which would mean the
film would not be suitable for a younger audience. Our film would be
more suited to an intelligent/intellectual audience due to the sustained
mystery and suspense, and the twists and turns the plot of the film
would contain.
Similar films which may be of interest to the viewers of our film include
The Sixth Sense and When a Stranger Calls. Sixth Sense is a 15 but aimed
at a more mature and intelligent audience. It is a thriller/horror with lots
of jumpy moments, some mild gore and a plot twist at the end. When a
Strangers calls is also a 15, but aimed at a more teenage audience, as it is
about a babysitter receiving threatening calls from an unknown number.
The main character is a high school girl, meaning this film is aimed more
at a female audience. As a lot of young people babysit, this makes the
main character more relatable for the target audience. The film also
contains a lot of mystery and suspense throughout, similar to our film.
3. Similarities to Another Film – ‘Ils’
The opening of ‘Ready or Not’ is similar in some aspects to that of the
film ‘Ils’. ‘Ils’ involves a killer or killers who remain hidden and a
complete mystery to the film characters and the audience, like in our
film. However in our opening we get more of a glimpse of the
intruder than in ‘Ils’.
We chose to do some shots from the killer’s point and from Holly’s
point of view. There is a shaky, POV shot from inside the garden shed
watching Holly walk to her door, and a shot from the intruder’s POV
looking through a gap in the curtains watching Holly. We later see two
shots from Holly’s point of view, one where Holly is looking out of the
window in response to a sound she heard outside, and one where
Holly is frantically looking around her room for a place to hide.
In ‘Ils’ we get shaky shots from across the road, which look as though
the girl is being watched by somebody from the other side. There is
also a shaky shot from within the bushes as the girl peers inside, again
hinting at a POV shot from whoever is trying to mess with her. We
also get a shot from the girl’s POV looking into the bushes in response
to sounds she hears.
The female character in ‘Ils’ has a mobile phone, however it won’t
work properly and so this present the idea of help being so near and
yet so far. Out opening incorporates a similar idea of a call for help
being anything but easy, and it is a mobile phone which indicates the
presence of the inturder. In ‘Ils’ a ratchet sound indicates the
presence of the killers.
4. Our Film’s Unique Selling Point
The unique selling point of our film is that the female protagonist. Despite this becoming a more
popular idea in many modern films, for example ‘The Hunger Games’, we feel there aren’t many
thriller films which use this idea. In the opening that we have made Holly initially comes across as
being vulnerable as she is a young girl at home alone. There are only hints at her stronger, less
girly nature in her clothing and her bedroom. We also tried to keep the rest of the story hard to
guess as we don’t know what happens to Holly after the final scene in the opening where she is
dragged out from under the bed. You could initially expect Holly to become the ‘damsel in
distress’ character, when in actual fact she is a more strong and independent girl. The usual
thriller convention is that the main character is an intelligent middle aged man, and the young
woman is the damsel in distress or sought after ‘princess’. Our twist means that the film should
attract not only the usual thriller audience, but also young women who think they can relate to
Holly’s independent ‘tomboy’ character.
5. Synergy and Convergence
Synergy involves two or more organizations or companies coming together
produce a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects. Some
film companies will use cross promotion and combine with music artists to help
to promote their film, which will in turn promote the artist. An example of this is
The Hunger Games, which used two songs (‘Safe and Sound’ and ‘Eyes Open’) by
artist Taylor Swift. Taylor Swift is a very famous singer, and The Hunger Games
was a highly anticipated film, meaning that they both had a large audience which
they could help to promote each other to.
Convergence involves different forms of media and technology combining, and
therefore the film can be promoted through other media aspects. This could
include newspaper or magazine articles, a mobile/tablet application or a video
game, which would relate to and promote the film. Some films, ‘Star Wars’ for
example, even headed down the merchandising root to help promote awareness
and interaction with the film. The highly popular ‘Harry Potter’ series had a
number of video games released for a variety of consoles and PC, and also a huge
range of merchandise.
Due to the scale of our film, we thought that cross promotion with a music artist
would work for helping to promote our film. However, it is difficult to find more
popular artists or bands who perform a style of music which would suite our film.
We thought a band similar to ‘Nine Inch Nails’ could work, the same band whose
music was used in the opening titles of ‘Se7en’. However their music is too heavy
for our film. A similar band with a less heavy style of music would do.
