Important food crop of South America
In India it is grown in northern states having low
temperature
It is a Hardy crop
Also useful as Green Manure
Only crop which grown as a winter crop and
autumn crop
Ultimate multi-purpose crop. it is used as
tender bean, green shelled bean, and dry bean
and as cattle feed.

5. MORPHOLOGY
Square and erect growing stems.
Grow to about 100 cm (tall varieties) and to
30 cm (dwarf varieties).
Pod borne in clusters (5-7 pods) in
axil of leaves which are 15 cm long
and 2 cm thick.
Flowers are pollinated by insects.
6. VARIETIES
Based on seed colour
• White seeded variety – Less Soft
• Green seeded variety – soft and suitable for freezing
Based on pod size
• Large podded – plant tall, erect and pods long, borne in cluster. Pod yield varies
from 80-90 q/ha.
• Small podded – plant small, erect, pods small, fleshy and borne in cluster (3-5)

New Delhi.
• Masterpiece White Long Pod, Masterpiece Green
Long Pod, Imperial White Windsor and Imperial
Green Windsor are some of the introduced varieties.
• Jawahar Selection 73-31 is an improved selection
from Madhya Pradesh.
• A few selections made at Bihar are BR-1 (black
seeded) and BR-2 (yellow seeded).

8. CLIMATE REQUIREMENT
Withstand cool temperature as low as -4°C
Only crop grown as winter crop
and Autumn crop.
Grown at higher elevation.
Crop is tolerant to water stress
due to protein accumulation.
9. SOIL
• Well drained, rich loamy soil
• Prepare field by giving repeated ploughing to
get fine tilth
• It tolerates salinity to a certain extent
• Optimum pH is 6.5-7.5
10. SOWING TIME, SEED RATE
AND SPACING
Crop is sown during September-october february-
March
Seeds @ 70-100 kg/ha
Seeds are sown in shallow furrows spaced at 75 cm
and width is 15 cm.
13. IRRIGATION
• Light irrigation done at 12-15 days intervals.
WEEDINGS
• Regular intercultural operations should be done.
• Two weeding at 25 and 40 days after sowing .
14. HARVESTING
• Crop is ready for harvesting 3-4 months (Spring crop) and 6-7 months (Autumn crop)
• Harvest pods at green-shell stage when they are young and tender.
YIELD
• 70-100 q/ha
