Pablo Picasso said âPlanning is the foundational key to all suc-
cesses.â Thereâs no doubt that strategic planning is a valuable
process that brings people together to develop goals and objec-
tives. Iâve experienced the satisfying results and positive impacts
when plans are accomplished, but I realize that a plan is just a use-
less piece of paper unless people are involved to carry it out.
Action, time, effort, and funding are required. And you need
the involvement of people to provide these essential resources. I
am pleased to be part of a successful organization that proves it-
self through commitment and actionânot just words. The Au-
burn Pulp & Paper Foundation is fortunate to have active mem-
bers who care and get involved so that deserving students can be educated and prepared to
enter our industry and keep it productive and competitive As a graduate of this program, I
appreciate what the APPFâs partnership with the University truly means. Letâs continue to
invest in the future through APPF because the students are worth it!

funded post-doctoral fellow. Hakovirta held a faculty position at
the University of Helsinki, Department of Physics where he cur-
rently holds an adjunct professorship. Among his many awards is
the Outstanding Innovation of the Year from LANL.
Dr. Hakovirtaâs research interests are in novel forest-based
biomaterials, nanomaterials applications and materials synthesis
using plasma techniques. He is especially interested in sustain-

Department chair Dr. Christopher Roberts said, "The Department of Chemical Engineering at Auburn University is
extremely pleased to have Dr. Hakovirta providing leadership to the Alabama Center for Paper and Bioresource Engi-
neering, particularly given his wealth of experience and tremendous accomplishments in both the academic and indus-
trial sectors. He has already forged a clear vision for AC-PABE, and the broader pulp and paper community, at this
critical time for the industry."
Dr. Hakovirta succeeds Dr. Harry Cullinan, who provided strong leadership to AC-PABE over the past 20 years
until his retirement last year, and Dr. Steve Duke, who served as interim director following Dr. Cullinan's retirement.
The Alabama Center for Paper and Bioresource Engineering provides undergraduate, graduate and continuing edu-
cation in science and engineering relevant to the needs of the pulp, paper and bio-resource industries, conducts funda-
mental and applied research in line with the industry's research agenda, develops and transfers technology to the in-
dustry consistent with the industry's technology vision and provides timely technical information to the operating sec-
tor of the industry.

2012 Membership and Development
The APPF welcomed Avid Solutions, Jedson, Mo-
tion Industries, and Advanced Industrial Resources as
new members in the 2011 â 2012 fiscal year. The
dues from our 30-plus corporate members provide a
majority of the funds needed to operate the foundation
and pay for the annual scholarships we sponsor. This
past year, the foundation awarded scholarships to 51
students totaling approximately $180,000! None of
this would have been possible without the dedicated
support of each of our member companies.
If you know of any companies that may be interest-
ed in joining the Foundation, please have them contact
a board member for information. For those wanting to
get personally involved, especially those with a pen-
chant for fundraising, we can always use the help on
the Membership and Development Committee.
Thanks to Tom Couture and Scott Childress for
their roles in organizing the Spring Golf Tournament
along with Mark Nichols and Peggy Jaye for their ex-
ceptional job of putting together and organizing the
Fall Silent Auction. The work of these individuals
and the many volunteers who give time, manual labor
and financial support make APPF successful!
Spring Golf Tournament
The Spring Golf Tournament proved to be another
very successful year. Once again weather cooperated
and we were blessed with a warm sunny day. We had
some great additions to the tournament this year mak-
ing it even more enjoyable for participants. To kick
things off Yates provided Lunch at the club house.
KBR sponsored a drink cart, which was a huge hit and
helped to keep everyone a little cooler throughout the
afternoon. This was a welcomed addition on a hot
day. Thank you to KBR and Yates for these two great
additions to our tournament. We matched 2011 with
28 paid teams and 112 golfers participating in the
tournament. The number of corporate sponsors was a
new record this year at 14. Gross proceeds for the
tournament were $36,787 netting $30,260 to be ap-
plied to scholarships. Once again we have raised the
bar for our 2013 tournament by setting a new record.
We had fantastic participation with some very low
scores this year. The IP Selma team was finally de-
throned by the Yates team after winning the tourna-
ment the two years prior. Following is a list of the
winning teams:

Scott Wilson with Advanced Industrial Resources (AIR)
provided golfers with an excellent BBQ dinner. This is the
third year that Scott has cooked for our tournament and it
seems to get better every year. AIR also sponsored the put-
ting contest with the donation of a 47 inch Vizio Flat
Screen TV. Thanks again to Scott and his team for the
great meal and donations.
As the tournament grows so do the responsibilities.
Thanks go out to those who helped me in organizing, plan-
ning and working the tournament: Scott Childress, Martin
Stap, Krislyn Harbin, Allyson Dozier and Jordan Moseley.
This event has grown to become a major source of scholar-
ship dollars for the engineering department. Also, a special
thank you goes out to all the companies that support this
event with their sponsorship. It wouldnât be the success it
is each year without them. Make sure to mark April 18,
2013 on your calendars for next yearâs event. Thank you
for your continued support!
Fall Silent Auction
The challenge delivered to the Silent Auction Team this
past year was to collect more than the $25,000 raised by the
Spring 2011 Golf Tournament. Not only did we deliver on
this challenge, we surpassed the total by $1,000! All total,
the silent auction brought in about $10,000 more than the
previous year. The golf committee has again challenged
the silent auction committee to beat the spring 2012 total of
over $30,000. In order to do this, we will need everyone
present and in a very generous mood. We look forward to
having a large crowd at our fall meeting and I am sure that
auction chair Mark Nichols will have once again organized
an abundance of great items to bid on. If you are interested
in donating an item to the silent auction, please contact
Mark, Peggy or Charles atMWNichols@Buckman.com ,
Peggy.Jaye@GaPac.com or Charles.Sewell@Albint.com.
ThanThanks to all of the organizers, donors and bidders for
making last yearâs auction the most successful ever. The
challenge now is to once again raise the bar so we can
make our foundation even stronger! Come bid on some the
items for sale such as beach condos, Bahamas cruise, week-
end trips to Savannah and Ashville NC, rounds of golf at
TPC Sawgrass in Jacksonville, Southwinds in Memphis,
Masters practice round tickets, hunts, Auburn prints, and
many other great items.
