Good morning Everyone. Thank you for having me here today My name is Jiyoung Park, Graduate student from Yeungnam University in Korea. This research has been done in my lab which call cyber emotions research center, but the first author isnât available to present here Thus, we are going to represent today. Please understand. Now, Let me start! This topic is âwebometrics analaysis of local media in south korea, focused on university studentsâ
we live in the smart society, In the smart society, media environment has been changed and media companies have utilized the Internet as an alternative channel. So , we would have some questions. How do local media being perceived among residents and do people satisfy their services? This research focused on this question.
First, I will explain briefly that why choose this area, Daegu and Gyeongbuk As we can see South Korea Geographic here, taegu population is 2.5millionare, comparing the 10millionare population of Seoul Frankly. My university located in this area and we want to know the news corporation and how people think about them. You knows, South Korea`s capital seoul. Recreaton, entertainment facilities and infrastructures are concentrated in this area.
Research objectives There are two research objectives, First, Identifying audience preference and satisfaction of regional media companies in Daegu and Gyeongbuk area. Second, Measuring indirect perception of users using social network analysis by discovering the hidden network So, finally, we expect to provide a comprehensive description of circumstances and online presences of local media in South Korea from audience-oriented approach.
In previous related research, Han focus on that although regional journalism is important, there is little academic interest. Kim & Kim says that Other researchers says existed studiesâ topic, methods are too narrow to fully understand local media itself. And ahn says to reflect the needs of communities and strengthen the competitiveness of local media, the study from an audience approach is necessary.
We have 3 research questions. First, To what extent do students prefer each media, newspapers, broadcasting, and cable television in Daegu and Gyeongbuk area? Second, Is there correlation between offline and online preference? Finally,To what extent do students satisfy the websites of the newspapers?
We used online survey with couple of statistics methods and social network analysis to discover the hidden network. Using both online survey and social network analysis can mixed analysis which would overcome the limitation of using one method.
In case of online survey, 174 university students in gyeongbuk are entered. Preference measured rank from most to least, and website satisfaction used 11 likert scale. Statistics analysis used Pearson correlation and one-way ANOVA
Research Target companies are 6 newspapers, 7 broadcasting stations and 8 cable televisions. And results part will present another researcher in my research center, Jiyoung Kim .
We use one of social network analysis method, webometrics analysis. Webometrics means from comebine two word, world wide web and metrics Particulary, used âco-link analysisâ that can occur between web pages. This work use of co-links to build indicators for each local media in daegu and gyeongbuk area. It analysis used to reveal hidden network structure from an aggregation level. collecting co-link data from LexiURL software.
Good afternoon. Iâm Jiyoung Kim, graduate student in Yeungnam Univ. in Korea. Iâm going to present the results part of this research. First part of the results is from the online survey To what extent do students prefer newspapers, broadcasting companies, cable television companies in Daegu and Gyeongbuk area? Is there correlation between offline and online preference? To what extent do students satisfy the websites of the newspapers? 6 newspapers 7 broadcasting stations (3TVs/4radios) 8 cable televisions
the preference of newspaper of students, Also, websites satisfaction of the newspapers Students have high preferences for Yeongnam & Maeil newspapers both offline newspaper and website of newspaper,
To test what extend on-offline preference correlate, I use pearson and spearman correlation analysis as statistics method. Pearson correlation proves the positive correlation between online preference and offline preference of newspapers. an the significance. 721 level and correlation between on-offline preference.
From scheffe post-hoc test, ìŽëŹí í”êłì ì°šìŽë ìëšìŒëłŽì 맀ìŒì ëŹžìŽ íì 돞ìŹë€ì ëčíŽ ìčìŹìŽíž ë§ìĄ±ëìì ëì ì ìë„Œ ì»ì êČìŒëĄë¶í° ëč륯ëììì íìžíë€ . Also, websites satisfaction of the newspapers Maeil and Yeongnam Daily newspapers have higher website satisfactions of newspapers from the ANOVA test
There is the high correlation among broadcasting station and websites of broadcasting stations of MBC KBS and TBC Preferences for Broadcasting station and websites of broadcating stations shows here The reason that MBC KBS TBS is high percent is effected by the major company. MBC, KBS, (Major company ì ìžì§ë ëë¶ì ëê”Ź mbc, ëê”Ź kbs ì ížëê° ëêČ ëíë ê±žëĄ ì¶ìžĄ ) TBC ë ë¶ë¶ìì ëȘšë ëëëŹì§êČ ëì
Offline and online channels are positively correlated
Website satisfactions of broadcasting stations shows that MBC TBC KBS are high At the ANOVA F value is 17. 321 and it is significant at . 000
Preferences for cable televisions shows here . CMB GCS have high on cable TV , and CMB SDTV show high on websites .
Cable Televisionâs online and offline preference are statistically significant according to the Pearson and Spearman correlation
Website satisfactions of cable TV are mostly similar also we can not find any statistic significance.
Offline and online channels are positively correlated
This study is good to understand audience perceptions of local media through mixed methods ( survey and SNA) Second, it can provide practical implications how local medium utilizes online resource efficiently and give some thoughts policy makers to develop the website as alternative news channel Lastly we can visualize hidden structural relationships among specific media platforms using webometrics analysis
Thatâs all we prepare and Thank you for listening And if you have questions email to corresponding author Han woo park . Thank you.
