Conflict ความขัดแย้ง and Violence
ความรุนแรง
We all have conflict in our lives.
We need to learn to handle it like a mature เป็นผู้ใหญ่
person.
We live in the same world, but we see
it in different ways.
When we have a conflict, we have two
choices.
Most people try to avoid conflict.
Avoiding conflict
keeps us safe, but
it doesn’t always
help us solve our
problems.
Or pretend there is no problem
Some people choose to fight. But
violence is not a good way to solve a
problem.
We should solve problems with our
mind and communication.
Use your head
to help solve a
problem, not
guns or
violence.
Bad ways to
deal with
conflict.
• The silent treatment
• Losing your temper
• Backstabbing
• Gossipping
Some people can stay relaxed during a
conflict. It is important to not let our
emotions control us.
Breathe deeply and count to ten
This helps us relax and distracts us from what
makes us angry. It gives us time to think of a calm
way to react.
empathy
Empathy means understanding other people’s
feelings and trying to see things from their point
of view.
Conflict escalation
When a conflict is getting
worse, and causing more
damage, we say that it is
“escalating.”
We should try to “de-
escalate” a problem.
Tone of voice
Tone of voice is important in a conversation.
Harsh and angry tones make the conflict worse,
and soft tones make it better.
Do you need a mediator?
A mediator is an outside person that may be
able to help you solve your conflict.
Bullying พาล Bullying is
when one
person tries to
hurt another’s
feelings.
Have you ever
bullied
someone?
Have you ever
been bullied?
bullies
How to stop bullying
Tell a parent or teacher.
Look the bully in the eye.
Pretend they aren’t
hurting you.
Stand up for other people
who are being bullied.
Be assertive and stand up for yourself.
Being assertive means calmly telling someone what
you need, without being selfish.
• Too Passive? Too Aggressive? Or Just Right?
• How do you know where you fall on the assertiveness scale? Here are some
examples:
• Paula has a style that's too passive. If you ask Paula what movie she wants to
see, she's most likely to say, "I don't know — what do you want to see?" She
usually lets others decide things, but later she regrets not saying what she
wanted. It bothers her that her friends do most of the talking. But when Paula
tries to speak, she speaks so softly that others talk over her.
• Janine has a style that's too aggressive. Janine has no trouble speaking her
mind. But when she does, she comes across as loud and opinionated. Janine
talks too much, interrupts, and rarely listens. If she disagrees with you, she lets
you know — usually with sarcasm or a putdown. She has a reputation for being
bossy and insensitive.
• Ben has an assertive style. When you ask for Ben's opinion, he gives it
honestly. If he disagrees with you, he'll say so — but in a way that doesn't put
you down or make you feel wrong. Ben is interested in your opinion, too. He
listens to what you have to say. Even when Ben disagrees with you, you still
feel he respects your point of view.
• What type of person are you?
Compromise ประนอม
We can’t always get
exactly what we want.
Sometimes we must
compromise to solve
conflict.
Road rage
People get angry when they are driving, and it
can be very dangerous.
Domestic violence- Violence in the
home.
Sometimes
parents abuse
children, and
give them cuts
and bruises.
Domestic
violence can
destroy a
family and be
traumatic for a
child.
Physical punishment
In some countries
it is still ok for
parents and
teachers to hit
children.
It is not ok in
America and most
of Europe.
Do you think it is
ok?
A father
spanking
his son.
Verbal abuse
Emotional abuse
hurts as much as
physical abuse.
Use kind words
rather than hurtful
words.
Sexual Abuse and Rape
Rape is when
someone forces
another person to
have sex when
they don’t want it.
Young women
need to be careful
to avoid being
raped.
Rape kit
If someone is
raped, the
police use
this to
document it.
Economic abuse
This happens where one person can control
the other’s ability to get money. This often
happens when the man makes the money and
the wife has no job.
What should you do?
• A friend is having trouble at home. He has
bruises on his arms and face sometimes. You
think that her father has been beating him.
What should you do?
• When you are driving in heavy traffic, another
car cuts in front of you and slows down really
quickly, and you almost hit him.
What should you do?
• You work at a restaurant as a waitress. Your
boss has been keeping you late on busy nights
and not paying you for the extra time you are
working.
What should you do?
• At a party, a popular girl invites you to join
her and her friends as they smoke
marijuana. At first you say, “No, thanks….I’m
okay,” but they begin to make fun of you for
being so “straight” and “pure.” They laugh at
you and tell you it’s time to grow up and stop
being such a little girl.
What should you do?
• You are always the one that cooks at your
house, and you always have to do the dishes
too. You are tired of this.
What should you do?
• You are at a party with some friends. When it
is time to leave, you realize that the friend
who drove you there has been drinking and is
too drunk to drive. You offer to drive for her,
but she refuses and says that she is just fine.
What should you do?
• Your boyfriend has been flirting with another
girl and it is making you jealous.
Questions
• What is it called when we can understand people’s feelings and point of view?
• When we are arguing with someone what should we be careful of with our voice?
• What is it called when someone gets angry when driving?
• What is it called when children make fun of other children?
• Who is a third person who can help solve a conflict between two people?
• What is an example of a bad way to solve a conflict?
• What does compromise mean?
• What should we do if we lose our temper to help us calm down?
Bullying role play
• One person is the bully and the other is being
bullied.
• Write a conversation that could happen.
• No violence please!
