After Pemberton's death in 1888, Asa Griggs Candler took over the company for $2,300. Coca-Cola faced business risks when building syrup plants but sales remained strong, making it the most popular drink in America. It was first bottled in 1894 by Joseph Biedenharn who gained full rights to bottle and sell it for $1.
