At such an event on Wednesday, Patna zone IGP P N Rai had to field questions and complaints related to traffic snarls in the city. "It is a compliment to your policing that we are not talking about `rangdari' which has almost ended," former BCC president Yugeshwar Pandey told the IGP at an interactive meeting between the police official and the Chamber members. Incidentally, Patna witnessed a massive traffic jam on Tuesday itself. "The traffic jams have assumed a very alarming proportion at Patna. Areas like Fraser Road, Exhibition Road, New Dak Bungalow Road, S P Verma Road, Jamal Road and the entire stretch of Ashok Rajpath are the worst hit," a memorandum submitted to the IGP by BCC president O K Agarwal said. It suggested creation of a separate traffic control room in the state capital. The business community made all kind of suggestions and complaints on the issue. "You should restrict the processions at the veterinary college," suggested one BCC member. Another complained about traffic policemen not wearing badges displaying their names so that someone could lodge a complaint against them. Yet another BCC member recalled he was forced to pay a fine of Rs 2,500 for parking his car near his destination . "I parked the car there because my wife is handicapped. But even your traffic SP Sridhar Mandal said that handicap factor did not concern him," the businessman complained. Rai conceded traffic is a major problem as the number of vehicles has increased four times during the last four years. He recalled he had ordered removal of encroachment from Exhibition Road. "But the encroachers were back by the time we finished at the other end of the road," he said. He also recalled how he had to personally intervene to get removed a car parked in the middle of a road. "There are all sorts of persons who defy traffic rules," he said. The IGP, however, listed a number of steps being taken for regulating traffic. "We cannot stop processions. But we will try to enforce an alternative route during that period," he said, adding teams have been constituted to remove encroachments. He also spoke about the proposed electronic surveillance system with CCTV cameras to regulate traffic and check crime. "We would be enforcing the one-way traffic system soon," he said.
