2. Recent activities at JSNE
August 21, 2012 | Sthanakvasi Samvatsari Pratikraman
This year was a rare occurrence when Sthanakvasi & Deravasi paryushan are on different days. On Aug 21, those
members who observe Sthanakvasi calander performed their annual Samvatsari pratikraman on Tuesday 21. For that
and upcoming Deravasi Samvatsari on September 19, we want to convey ‘Michhami Dukkadam’ to all our members.
August 18, 2012 | Detroit Sangh Visit:
Member of the Jain Society of Greater Detroit (http://www.jain-temple.org/) visited our Derasar on Saturday Aug 18,
2012 for their Chaitra Pari Pati. About 100 members of all age groups travelled all night by road to come to our
Derasar in two buses. They arrived at early morning on 8/18 and stayed at the nearby hotel in Burlington. Members of
the Executive Committee and other volunteers were ready to welcome them at the hotel in early morning hours with
warm tea and breakfast. While they were enjoying the breakfast at the hotel, other volunteers were busy preparing
the Derasar for performing Ashta Prakari Pooja & Snatra Pooja by the Detroit Sangh. After the breakfast at the hotel
and getting ready for pooja they arrived at the Derasar by two buses. Our members performed traditional sangh
poojan at our Derasar by washing their feet, tilak & prabhavna. They performed Astha Prakari Pooja & Snatra Pooja.
While they were busy doing pooja, our volunteers arranged for lunch. Given that it was rainy outside and setting up
tents was not a possibility, we decided to serve the lunch our traditional way by bringing food to everyone instead of
self-serve buffet. By now they were truly ‘out of words’ to express their gratitude towards our hospitality. After lunch
they went to Boston for a quick city tour and went to the Norwood Derasar for the Evening and back to hotel at night
in Burlington. Since they were in a rush to leave very early in the morning on Sunday back to Detroit, our sangh
members again went to their hotel on Sunday morning to serve them warm breakfast and tea and did the sendoff. All
in all it was great experience for sangh members. Breakfast for both days was sponsored individually by JSNE
members and the lunch was sponsored by our sangh as whole. This visit left everyone with this question, when are
we going on trip like this? Another question is, are you going to join if we go?
August 8th to August 13th, 2012 | Pravachan by Shri Tarlaben Doshi
Tarlaben Doshi who needs no introduction was visiting our Derasar from Aug 10 through Aug 13. She did pravachans on
various subjects.
July 27th to August 3rd, 2012 | Pravachan by Pandit Shri Samirbhai
Shamirbhai Pandit who was with us during the 2010 Paryushan visited us to deliver Pravachan series on various topics.
During both pravachan series more than 25 members on average were attending these sessions on daily basis despite
being weekdays, summer and back to back visit from different scholars. We are very encouraged and excited about
growing participation from members of different background and age groups and taking advantage of vast knowledge
these scholars bring to our sangh.
July 2, 2012 | Chaumasi Chaudas & Pakkhi Pratikraman
Our members performed traditional pakkhhi pratikraman on the Chaumasi Chaudas on July 2nd 2012

Sustaining Member Contribution
The responsibility of keeping the derasar clean and maintaining it in the best shape comes with the ownership. We
need community support and contribution for daily upkeep and pay for repairs and utilities. At the time of Pratishtha
Mahotsav, we launched a “Sustaining Membership” drive. We are urging all the sangh members to become
“Sustaining Member” by committing $350.00 per year donation. This is less than one dollar a day commitment for
your derasar. You can pay all at once or in monthly installments. JSNE volunteers will personally contact you during
Paryusan Parv for your commitment. Please make a commitment to keep up and maintain the derasar in the best
condition.
JSNE Pathshala
Jai Jinendra and Pranam. Hope you all had a great summer and are ready with renewed energy and enthusiasm to learn
and practice Jainism at pathshala once again at our beautiful Derasar. Although it seems JSNE Pathshala started just a
short time ago, JSNE Pathshala is already 8 years old and will begin another year this September 2012. It was a
remarkable year and experience of conducting Pathshala at new Derasar after Pratishtha, during the past year; we once
again successfully accomplished many tasks on hand while we continued to add new dimensions to make Pathshala a
better place for students, parents and teachers. Most importantly, support from the parents, community, hard work of
staff and the spirit of our students bring us many things to be very proud of.
Pathshala activities – In addition to learning Jain Philosophy, rituals, sutras and stutis, Pathshala students
enthusiastically participated in the following activities this past year –
5
JSNE Newsletter: September 2012 – www.jsne.org
6. Diwali Musical - On November 5th, 17 pathshala students (from levels 1-4) performed a musical play that
depicted Mahavir Swami’s 5 Kalyanaks to celebrate the 1st Diwali at our new derasar. The children performed
live with acting, dances, songs, and instruments (tabla, violin, guitar, and clarinet) with audience participation.
Special thanks to Nimisha Asthagiri for choreographing with all the volunteers and committed families who
participated.
Jain Art Workshop – For the 1st time ever, a Jain Painting workshop was organized for pathshala students on
February 5th 2012. A professional artist from Lexington MA, Java Joshi, came to teach and assist the students.
More than 35 students participated in drawing and painting various Jain symbols. During the March pathshala
assembly session, students who prepared these arts presented and described their paintings to the pathshala
community. All of these paintings are displayed in pathshala classrooms and at various places in the temple.
Special thanks to Nimisha Asthagiri and Jainy Shah for co-coordinating this event.
JAINA Teachers National Conference at LA – Hemant Shah and Haresh Mehta represented JSNE Pathshala at this
convention during Memorial Day weekend. This convention took place after 10 years. The primary objective of
this conference was to have group discussions on Pathshala Education Material, Teaching Methodology, share
pathshala activities and learn from other teachers/coordinators. More than 80 teachers attended this
conference. JSNE pathshala teachers were provided an opportunity to present ‘Teaching Methodology’
practiced at our center. This was very well received by all the attendees.
Test - On June 11th pathshala, students took written and oral exams on what they learned during the year.
Graduation Ceremony – On the last day of June pathshala, the three graduating students-‘Tejas Shroff’, ‘Saniya
Shah’ and ‘Rahul Shah’ were acknowledged and honored with a Certificate. We wish them all the best.
End-of-year outing – On the last day of Pathshala on June 10th, students, along with parents/teachers, had a
great time at the Bombers Laser Tag in Woburn, MA. 40+ students and parents/teachers gathered to have fun and
everyone loved this activity/place.
Jain Darshan Vidhi info session for Pathahala Teachers – On August 9th, Thursday, Swadhyay teacher ‘Pulkit Shah’
conducted a special session for the pathshala teachers covering in-depth understanding of ‘Jain Darshan & Puja
Vidhi’. This was very informative for all the teachers and will be helpful to teach this important aspect to
students in their classes.
On-line Registration – Starting this year, Pathshala registration has gone on-line. The form is available under
Pathshala section. One form per family is required. Special thanks to Gaurav Shah – JSNE web-coordinator for
