2. 19 Do not accumulate for yourselves things that are
only highly valued on the earth where moth and rust
corrupt and thieves break in and steal, 20 but
accumulate for yourselves things that are highly valued
in heaven where neither moth nor rust corrupt and
where thieves do not break in and steal. For where
your treasure is there will your heart be also. The eye is
the lamp of the body. So if your eye is working well
your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is
not working your whole body will be full of darkness. If
the light you have is really darkness, how great is that
darkness.
3. No one can serve two masters, for he will either hate
the one and love the other or he will be bonded to the
one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and
material possessions. Because of this I am telling you
not to be anxious about your life, what you will eat and
what you will drink or how you will be clothed. Is not
life more than food and the body more than clothing.
Look at the birds of the air, they neither sow nor reap
nor gather into barns but your heavenly father feeds
them. Are you not of much more value than they are?
And which of you by worrying can add a single moment
to the span of his life?
4. As far as clothing is concerned, why are you anxious?
Look at the lilies of the field and see how they grow.
They neither labour nor spin, yet I am telling you that
not even Solomon in all his glory was clothed like one
of these. So if the grass of the field, which lives for only
a day and will be burned in the fire, is given such value,
will he not much more provide clothing for you, O
person of little faith? Therefore, don’t get anxious
saying, “What shall we eat or what shall we drink or
with what shall we be clothed All these things are what
the people who don’t know God seek after and your
heavenly Father knows that you have need of all these
things.
5. Instead, seek first the kingdom of God and his
righteousness and all these things shall be added to
you. And don’t be anxious about what will happen
tomorrow for tomorrow will have its own separate
challenges. Each day’s challenges are enough for you to
face at one time.
