3. Centre for Science in Villages (CSV)

Devendra Kumar is a disciple of Gandhi and follows the philosophy developed by the Mahatma.
After years spent as a manager in an Indian corporation, Devendra left his job and moved to a
village to study the life of villagers. He then created the "Center of Science for Villages" in the city
of Wardha, near Nagpur, Maharastra, in the center of India.

The Center of Science for Villages is a government organization, although it is mostly responsible for its
own funding through various research programs. Its primary goal is to improve life conditions in the Indian
rural areas.

The techniques developed by the CSV range from mud housing technology to various methods of energy
production or food growing. Hygiene is also a preoccupation, as well as favoring the development of local
alternate industries.

These techniques are simple to use, costless and environment-safe, based on local materials. Training to
villagers is provided in parallel, so they can pass their experience to others. This favors the creation of a
local know-how that can be used to create jobs, trades, etc...

This is in agreement with the Gandhian philosophy whose target is that villages should be self sufficient:
the use of these "appropriate technologies" brings independence to villagers and helps them to live with
dignity.

The focus areas are as follows: -

     Bamboo & Mud Housing
     Total Sanitation systems
     Renewable Energy

5. Media Lab Asia / Indian Institute of Information Technology

Media Lab Asia and Indian Institute of Information Technology have jointly developed a web based,
personalized agro advisory system which uses Information Technology to solve unscientific agricultural
practices called ‘eSagu’.

Sagu means cultivation in Telugu local language, the region in which the project started.

It exploits the advances in Information Technology to build a cost-effective agricultural information
dissemination system to disseminate expert agriculture knowledge to the farming community to improve
the crop productivity.

So far eSagu has been operationalized it in 300 villages covering six districts for 50 agriculture crops
besides fish and prawn.

eSagu has received recognition in different forums as listed below: -

 eSagu was declared the best e-governance project at the Computer Society of India (CSI) and
Nihilent e-Governance Awards for 2005-06 ([Nihilent e-Governance Awards
 eSagu features as a select entry among worldwide latest novel Internet applications in the book
"Innovative Application Case study 2006" published by Institute for Information Industry, a not-for-
profit Think Tank for Taiwanese Ministry of Economic Affairs in Taipei.
 eSagu was listed as one of the top three e-Governance projects (the other two are BHOOMI and
SAMPARK) of India in the video film on “Next e Governance Plan”, November 2005.
6. Smokeless Cooking Stove-Kishor Kanthikar

In the rural part of India the main energy source for cooking is conventional stove using either firewood or
charcoal as source of fuel. This stove has many disadvantages viz. extremely low fuel efficiency, high
smoke emission etc. This leads to many kinds of health hazards to the village women and uncontrolled
use of fossil fuel sources.

Considering the above facts an improved version which is not only smokeless but also very energy
efficient towards the consumption of the fuel was designed. In the design charcoal is used as primary fuel
which is commonly available and it can be generated by new gasification techniques from the agro waste.

The design features are as follows: -

            a. The stove consists of four main parts i) support base ii) fuel chamber iii) fresh air
circulation duct iv) forced air inlet.
            b. Support bas: this of special design having pyramid shape concentrating the cosmic
                 energy.
            c. Fuel Chamber: This is also of special design having pyramid shape which lead to drastic
increase in the energy efficiency of fuel consumption. This shape increases the heat by
                 about 20%.
            d. Fresh Air Circulation duct: Extra care has been taken to provide fresh air to the fuel
burning with minimum pressure drop. This leads to extremely low force to drive the fresh
                 air into the stove.
            e. Forced Air Inlet: Two options have been kept for the choice of the user. a) Manual hand
blower which can be operated by either hand or by foot. b) Extra low power battery
operated fan blower. This is of special design in which the battery last for about 12 hours
of continual operation. The further option of rechargeable batteries with Solar Photo
Voltaic Panel is also available. These features are at extra cost.
            f. All the above combination make this stove a Renewable Energy based Eco friendly
source of heat energy for cooking.

This improved design provides about 50% increase in fuel efficiency.

FUEL AND GHG SAVING : Due to increase in efficiency even if 3% of the Indians switchover to this stove
it can save about 3.2 million Tons of fossil fuel and about 6.7 million Tons of CO2 emission.
COST BENEFIT: The conventional stove cost about Rs. 300/- plus consumption of fuel (charcoal) costing
Rs. 8/kg for a family of 5 persons i.e. cost of fuel per year would be Rs. 2920/yr. Thus the effective cost at
the first year end would be Rs.3220. As against this the new improved stove will cost Rs.450 and the fuel
cost will be reduced by 50%. Thus the effective cost at the first year end would be Rs.1910. Thus the net
saving at the first year end itself would be Rs.860. From the second year onwards the yearly saving
would be Rs.1010/yr.

7. Villgro Stores
A unique cash and carry store- VLE rural distribution channel for innovative products and services

VIMPL to showcase a scalable and profitable marketing model for innovative products and services in
rural India which creates sustainable positive impact on people’s life

Out of the 770 million people in rural India more than 75% depend on agriculture & diary and 78% of
these farmers have less than 5 acres of land. Average agriculture and dairy production in India is 30-50%
of the world’s highest average productivity. The low productivity is caused by poor access of innovative
product and services to large number of small holders as most of the distribution and extension services
stop at feeder towns or villages with 1000+ population. Even if some minimalistic and functional retail
channel reaches these villages, they are not configured for new product and services, resulting in extra
ordinary delay in technology adoption
VIMPL is creating on ground infrastructure and organization to scale up quickly and profitably.
In its last mile intervention to take innovations to market, VIMPL is guided by following principal
 Improve affordability of innovations in rural markets
 Make innovations accessible to users in rural markets
 Increase engagement with the end users by giving them a comprehensive set of products and
          services

                                                                      VILLAGE LEVEL ENTREPRENURES

messages or short conversation that walks the caller through a set of questions to arrive at the
information the caller is seeking. Region specific speech recognition technology is used for 11 different
languages in India and the technology also adapts to different dialects.

Uniphore developed VoiceNet that has the potential to reach millions of mobile phone subscribers
through different services.

Indradhanu Automatic Weather Monitoring Station
NEUROSYNAPTICS PRIVATE LIMITED, BANGALORE

Agriculture is influenced by several factors like climatic, physiological, biological, economic factors etc and
certain risk is involved with each factor. Amongst these climatic factors are one of the major risks.
Farmers can mitigate the risk of yield losses due to unfavorable climatic conditions through some risk
mitigating models like weather based insurances.

Tasar Yarn Making Machine
MASUTA PRODUCERS COMPANY, JHARKAND
Tasar reeling is a livelihood activity for over 25,000 individuals, in varying degrees of involvement, across
sectors varying from highly unorganised players, typically family members of weavers, to organised
cooperatives and producer companies, like Masuta. Some of the major problems in tasar yarn production
include the unstable nature of tasar cocoon rearing, the relatively low investment in tasar related R&D,
the comparatively low value proposition tasar offers (as opposed to mulberry silk).

Bamboo House
WONDER GRASS PRIVATE LTD, NAGPUR
Bamboo House developed by Wonder Grass is a 400 sqft house with bamboo as main construction
material. The walls are made up of prefabricated interwoven bamboo strips erected on a standard brick
cement foundation. The walls are then reinforced with cement or adobe. Then the prefabricated truss and
beam are raised over the supporting lattice columns to complete the framework for thatched roof.

Rural BPO
DESICREW SOLUTIONS PRIVATE LIMITED, CHENNAI
Rural educated youth are unable to find employment opportunities in villages, and as a result not migrate
to cities. Desi-crew addresses this through an innovative Business Process Outsourcing model, where
urban consumers outsource back-end support work to rural centres.

Rural Opportunities Production Enterprise (ROPE)
ROPE PVT LTD, CHENNAI
Poor artisans in rural areas are not able to market their products effectively and therefore get inadequate
earnings. ROPE is a business process innovation that links rural handicraft artisans to urban markets
through a remote outsourcing model.

Arogyam organics Pvt Ltd (AOPL)
AOPL,CHENGELPET
Arogyam Organics is a Private ltd company founded by Mr. Arumugasamy in the year 2008.It offers a
range of organic products under the name 'Bhojanam' and works with communities of small and marginal
farmers in Tamil Nadu, ensuring that they get access to the best practices, equipment and market
support. The rationale lies in the fact that farmer gets a good price for their produce & consumer gets top
quality, affordable organic produce. They work with Centre for Indian Knowledge Systems, an
organization working with farmers on indigenous organic agriculture.

Skymet Pvt. Ltd,Noida
SKYMET

Skymet is an enterprise that specializes in the processing and forecasting of weather information in the
Indian subcontinent. Skymet is the leading private supplier of high quality, reliable weather forecasts and
caters to the needs of the nations leading print and media houses. Of particular interest to Villgro is

small and marginal farmers that depend on the weather for their livelihoods. Skymet is promoted by Jatin

  • 9. 3. Centre for Science in Villages (CSV) Devendra Kumar is a disciple of Gandhi and follows the philosophy developed by the Mahatma. After years spent as a manager in an Indian corporation, Devendra left his job and moved to a village to study the life of villagers. He then created the "Center of Science for Villages" in the city of Wardha, near Nagpur, Maharastra, in the center of India. The Center of Science for Villages is a government organization, although it is mostly responsible for its own funding through various research programs. Its primary goal is to improve life conditions in the Indian rural areas. The techniques developed by the CSV range from mud housing technology to various methods of energy production or food growing. Hygiene is also a preoccupation, as well as favoring the development of local alternate industries. These techniques are simple to use, costless and environment-safe, based on local materials. Training to villagers is provided in parallel, so they can pass their experience to others. This favors the creation of a local know-how that can be used to create jobs, trades, etc... This is in agreement with the Gandhian philosophy whose target is that villages should be self sufficient: the use of these "appropriate technologies" brings independence to villagers and helps them to live with dignity. The focus areas are as follows: -  Bamboo & Mud Housing  Total Sanitation systems  Renewable Energy  Rock Bee  Handmade Paper  Tools & Equipments  Pottery  Organic Farming  Food Processing  Technology for SHGs  Training

  • 12. 6. Smokeless Cooking Stove-Kishor Kanthikar In the rural part of India the main energy source for cooking is conventional stove using either firewood or charcoal as source of fuel. This stove has many disadvantages viz. extremely low fuel efficiency, high smoke emission etc. This leads to many kinds of health hazards to the village women and uncontrolled use of fossil fuel sources. Considering the above facts an improved version which is not only smokeless but also very energy efficient towards the consumption of the fuel was designed. In the design charcoal is used as primary fuel which is commonly available and it can be generated by new gasification techniques from the agro waste. The design features are as follows: - a. The stove consists of four main parts i) support base ii) fuel chamber iii) fresh air circulation duct iv) forced air inlet. b. Support bas: this of special design having pyramid shape concentrating the cosmic energy. c. Fuel Chamber: This is also of special design having pyramid shape which lead to drastic increase in the energy efficiency of fuel consumption. This shape increases the heat by about 20%. d. Fresh Air Circulation duct: Extra care has been taken to provide fresh air to the fuel burning with minimum pressure drop. This leads to extremely low force to drive the fresh air into the stove. e. Forced Air Inlet: Two options have been kept for the choice of the user. a) Manual hand blower which can be operated by either hand or by foot. b) Extra low power battery operated fan blower. This is of special design in which the battery last for about 12 hours of continual operation. The further option of rechargeable batteries with Solar Photo Voltaic Panel is also available. These features are at extra cost. f. All the above combination make this stove a Renewable Energy based Eco friendly source of heat energy for cooking. This improved design provides about 50% increase in fuel efficiency. FUEL AND GHG SAVING : Due to increase in efficiency even if 3% of the Indians switchover to this stove it can save about 3.2 million Tons of fossil fuel and about 6.7 million Tons of CO2 emission.
  • 13. COST BENEFIT: The conventional stove cost about Rs. 300/- plus consumption of fuel (charcoal) costing Rs. 8/kg for a family of 5 persons i.e. cost of fuel per year would be Rs. 2920/yr. Thus the effective cost at the first year end would be Rs.3220. As against this the new improved stove will cost Rs.450 and the fuel cost will be reduced by 50%. Thus the effective cost at the first year end would be Rs.1910. Thus the net saving at the first year end itself would be Rs.860. From the second year onwards the yearly saving would be Rs.1010/yr. 7. Villgro Stores A unique cash and carry store- VLE rural distribution channel for innovative products and services VIMPL to showcase a scalable and profitable marketing model for innovative products and services in rural India which creates sustainable positive impact on people’s life Out of the 770 million people in rural India more than 75% depend on agriculture & diary and 78% of these farmers have less than 5 acres of land. Average agriculture and dairy production in India is 30-50% of the world’s highest average productivity. The low productivity is caused by poor access of innovative product and services to large number of small holders as most of the distribution and extension services stop at feeder towns or villages with 1000+ population. Even if some minimalistic and functional retail channel reaches these villages, they are not configured for new product and services, resulting in extra ordinary delay in technology adoption
  • 14. VIMPL is creating on ground infrastructure and organization to scale up quickly and profitably.
