3. Romania is located in Southeastern Europe in a region known as the
Balkans. It borders the Black Sea to the east and is slightly smaller
than the state of Oregon in area. Romanian terrain is mostly plains and
mountains. There are also lots of rivers flowing through Romania.

5.  The land that is today Romania, became part of the Roman Empire
in 100AD
 After the decline of the Roman Empire, many different groups of
migrating people passed through
 In the middle of the 16th century, some of Romania was under
Ottoman rule
 By the 18th century the Hapsburg’s Austrian Empire controlled some
of present-day Romania
 In 1878, after a failed revolution and a war, Romania was
recognized as an independent state

6.  In WWI Romania eventually joined the Allies, but faced
major loss
 After the war, Romania was a constitutional monarchy
until a dictator took over in 1937
 Romania suffered greatly in WWII as well
 After WWII, Romania was proclaimed the Communist
People’s Republic and was under direct military and
economic control of the Soviets until late 1950s
 In the 1960s a brutal dictatorial rule took over Romania
 After the Romanian Revolution of 1989 it was
transformed from a Communist state and into democracy

was based off the Romanian Prince, Vlad the Impaler
 Romania was the first place in Europe to have electric
street lighting
 The Romanian language is 1,700 years old and the only
Romance language in Eastern Europe
 The first ever perfect 10 in the Olympics games was
given to Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci (1976)
