Manchester Redevelopment

Manchester’s CBD initiatives
New city centre housing: 2500 new dwellings (partially funded: most were warehouses converted
into apartments)
The Metrolink: a tram system was added to the transport network in 1992, bringing commuters
and shoppers into the city centre from Bury in the north and Altrincham in the south.
Redevelopment of the Arndale Shopping Centre in the CBD after the IRA bomb in 1996 destroyed
a large part of the central area. This also includes a new transport interchange.
Outdoor café area and new paving areas with sculptures in Ann’s square.
Flagship redevelopment of a new Marks and Spencer store (the largest in the world when opened in
1999) and a new Selfridges store.
Re-imaging of Exchange Square area in the Millenium Quarter district of the CBD including URBIS
museum, bars, restaurants, street sculptures as well as Printworks, a US style urban
entertainment centre.
Redevelopment of the bus station and adjacent to Piccadilly Gardens to include new office
development and multiple mini water fountain features and seating.
