Building Classrooms in Knowledge Cloud for Next Generation
Promote Massive Open Online Courses for Agricultural Professionals
Agriculture and Allied Areas
 In 1960s, the establishment of Agricultural Universities in India, on the pattern
similar to that of the Land Grant colleges of the United States (integration of
education, research and extension), contributed a lot in boosting the
agricultural growth from 51 million tons in 1950 to about 257.13 million tons
(MT) in 2013-14.
 The model has shown a direction in reorganizing and strengthening the
agricultural education system in India and also helped in bringing diverse
subjects in the course curriculum integrating provision of hands-on practical
exposure to the student.
 Now, the percentage of students pursuing agriculture as an undergraduate or a
post graduate degree or PhD, remains amongst the lowest as a comparison to
the other streams (All India Survey on Higher Education, MHRD). Reasons…
 Outdated curriculum,
 Unavailability of good quality faculty members
 Requirement of reorienting the agricultural education
according to the changing scenarios at national and
international level etc.

Feedback received from farmers
Narmadamma, farmer
from Addakal village
Chandrakala, farmer
from Addakal village
“Last time our whole groundnut crop was destroyed due to
unexpected rain, but this season a voice message received from
Krishi Vani on weather forecast saved our crop as we were able to
harvest three days ahead of the original harvest date. It saved us our
season-long efforts and hard work.”
“We used to take advices and recommendations from
agricultural input dealers and received mixed results. But now
with ICRISAT’s Krishi Gyan Sagar – personalized information
advisory services, we are getting precise application
recommendations in our farms. It saves money and gives us
better yield and income.”
These are two of the 40,000 farmers in 171 villages of India, taking benefits of
the Krishi Gyan Sagar and Krishi Vani – Powered by the Green SIM project
