TYSELEY ENERGY PARK
CRYOGENIC ‘LIQUID AIR’ NETWORK
The University of Birmingham has extensive expertise with clean
cold technologies.
Cryogenic energy storage systems use renewables and/or off-peak
electricity to liquefy air which involves compression and expansion
processes. The cryogenic liquid has a temperature below -190oc,
and is stored in a vessel. It is then pumped to a high pressure
(150 bar), when electricity is needed, and then vaporised into
a gas and superheated, using either or both heat and waste heat,
if available. It then goes through an expansion process in a turbine
to generate electricity.

The SME Support Hub will help local
businesses consider more sustainable and
efficient ways to deliver the energy services
that their business require. This could be
through the introduction of new energy
technologies, systems integration, or through
new energy business models.
As a waste product, the TCR process
produces “Biochar” which is useful as
a soil improver for agricultural purposes.
(TCR PLANT) BIO-BATTERY:
THERMAL CATALYTIC REFORMING
The hydrogen filling station supplies
green hydrogen from both the electrolyser and
bio-battery thermo-catalytic reforming process.
The hydrogen is clean
‘green’ hydrogen from
renewables, rather than
‘brown’ hydrogen from steam
reformation of methane.
HYDROGEN POWERED
BUSES AND TAXIS
Modern fuel cell vehicles can refill at the
hydrogen filling station. The hydrogen is
clean ‘green’ hydrogen from renewables,
rather than ‘brown’ hydrogen from steam
reformation of methane. The electrolyser
converts wrong-time renewable electricity
into hydrogen. This can be efficiently turned
back into electricity using a fuel cell.
HYDROGEN
ELECTROLYSER
The TCR process used in the bio battery
produces biodiesel from a range of
feedstocks. This can be used in clean
Euro IV diesel engines. Efficiency can be
improved further by creating a ‘heat
hybrid’ with a diesel engine.
The electrolyser can be used to provide
grid balancing by turning ‘wrong-time’
energy into clean hydrogen.
The waste products from
the anaerobic digestor
can be sent to the TCR
plant for further energy
recovery.
Inside the biodigester,

energy engineers and nurture research into the
latest energy technologies. This will be based
in a signature building with exemplar energy
performance and demonstrating cutting edge
energy technologies.

TYSELEY ENERGY PARK
Tyseley Energy Park is one of the sites within the Tyseley Environmental
Enterprise District. Established in 1720, site owners Webster
and Horsfall Ltd are one of Birmingham’s oldest manufacturing
companies. The business has been located on the site in Tyseley
for 160 years, and are best known as the manufacturer of the wire
for the first successful transatlantic telegraph cable in 1866.
The inventions of James Horsfall in 1850 led to the development
of dynamic steel springs which made the internal combustion
engine possible, and laid the foundations for growth in the
automotive industries which the company still supplies today.
Energy is still a key strategic business focus for the company,
which supplies wire and wire ropes for the oil, gas and coal industries.
The development of Tyseley Energy Park, with its emphasis on
alternative low carbon energy fuels, builds on that tradition.
Phase One of Tyseley Energy Park has already seen a
£47 million investment into a 10MWe waste wood biomass
power station, which supplies the development site with electricity.
Planning permission has recently been approved for the UK’s first
low-carbon refuelling station on phase two which is strategically
THE TYSELEY ENVIRONMENTAL
ENTERPRISE DISTRICT WILL BE A CLEAN
TECHNOLOGY HUB FOR THE CITY OF
BIRMINGHAM. WITH A LONG HISTORY OF
INDUSTRY IN THIS AREA, THE REMAINING
BUSINESSES SEEK NEW AND INNOVATIVE
ENERGY SUPPLIES IN ORDER TO HELP
THE REMAINING FIRMS STAY COMPETITIVE.
IT IS AGAINST THAT BACKDROP
OF TRANSFORMING INDUSTRIAL
COMPETITIVENESS THAT THE VISION
HAS BEEN CONCEIVED.
ENERGY INNOVATION ZONE
TYSELEY ENERGY PARK located between the city centre and Birmingham airport.
Tyseley Energy Park provides a logical place to deploy refuelling
infrastructure for a range of low carbon fuels. The fuels available
support different transport options in the City and will improve
of air quality and deliver transformational change, attracting new
businesses and supporting the regeneration of the area.
Tyseley Energy Park is the energy-waste nexus for the City of
Birmingham. The adjoining energy-from-waste plant has long been a
feature of the Tyseley skyline converting 350,000 tonnes of municipal
waste into power. The plant currently produces 25MW of electricity
with the potential to generate significant heat for distribution in support
of the City Council’s ambitions for District Heating across the City.
The new developments on Tyseley Energy Park will complement
the adjoining plant with a range of innovative technologies which
can transform other more complex waste streams into energy.
Planning permission has recently been approved for a new thermal
catalytic reforming reactor that will convert biomass into renewable
energy in the form of heat and power. The installation will involve the
heating of biomass in the absence of oxygen (non-combustion) to
produce intermediate energy carriers (char, syngas and pyrolysis oil)
for use in in a stationary CHP engine.
As part of a relentless drive to green industry in the city, the next
generation of waste reprocessing technologies will be developed on
phase three, using clean energy to power advanced processes to
support the City Council’s ambitions to become the best City nationally
at recycling and recovering energy from waste. Power generated
within the site will be from renewable sources including the biomass
plant on phase one, solar panels and the UKs first silent revolution
wind turbines. This clean energy will be used to support the growth
of Webster and Horsfall Ltd manufacturing operation, as well as
providing energy at a low price for the various operations planned.
The site will become a crucible for research and learning,
with new laboratories, educational facilities and, a research
and development centre planned on phase four within a
landmark building with exemplar energy performance.

Cryogenic energy storage systems use renewables and/or off-peak electricity to liquefy air which involves compression and expansion processes. The cryogenic liquid has a temperature below -190oc, and is stored in a vessel. It is then pumped to a high pressure (150 bar), when electricity is needed, and then vaporised into a gas and superheated, using either or both heat and waste heat, if available. It then goes through an expansion process in a turbine to generate electricity. NATURAL GAS NETWORK n Bio methane gas grid injection n Filling stations Liquid Natural Gas n Natural Gas from the Grid is compressed for use in CNG powered vehicles HYDROGEN NETWORK n Thermo Catalytic Reformation plant: produces biodiesel from a range of feedstocks that can be used in Euro IV diesel engines. It also produces green Hydrogen. n Hydrogen powered buses and taxis filling station n Hydrogen Electrolyser n Hydrogen may also be employed in advanced critical materials recycling processes. THE SITE WILL BE THE ENERGY AND WASTE NEXUS FOR THE CITY OF BIRMINGHAM, SHOWING HOW NOVEL ENERGY TECHNOLOGIES CAN FORM AN INNOVATIVE INDUSTRIAL ECOLOGY. TYSELEY ENERGYCAPITAL
  • 2. The new Birmingham Bio Power Plant gasification technology used to generate electricity from recovered wood waste. The 10.3 MW biomass power project has been developed by Carbonarius. The City of Birmingham has ambitious plans to deliver carbon reductions, create a low carbon infrastructure and to modernise how it deals with waste. These priorities are captured in the Carbon Roadmap produced by the City’s Green Commission which articulates the ambition via CO2 Emissions Target and Carbon Budgets. BIRMINGHAM: ENERGY CAPITAL TYSELEY ENVIRONMENTAL ENTERPRISE DISTRICT ENERGY VECTORS District Heating Network Cryogenic ‘Liquid Air’ Network Natural Gas (Grid) Network Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Hydrogen Network Electricity Network Tyseley Smart Microgrid The refrigerated lorry uses a revolutionary new ‘Dearman Engine’ to provide clean cooling, without the associated emissions of Diesel transport refrigeration units. Liquid nitrogen produced on the Tyseley site powers the vehicle. Liquid Nitrogen LIQUID AIR FILLING STATION CRYOGENIC ENERGY STORAGE LIQUEFIED PETROLEUM GAS (LPG) Liquefied Petroleum Gas Imported to the site by tanker. Stored for refuelling vehicles. Provides a lower-carbon alternative than conventional petrol and diesel. Waste wood will be gasified and turned into heat and power. This class A-C waste wood would otherwise have ended up in landfill. 80,000 tonnes/year Waste, low grade heat from the district heating network used to promote anaerobic digestion. The new district heating network will provide heat to businesses and industry for space and process heat. Using clean energy made from waste. Low grade waste heat from the district heating system is used to boost the efficiency of the cryogenic energy storage system. The state-of-the-art Energy Recovery Facility in Tyseley takes 350,000 tonnes of Birmingham’s rubbish each year and converts it into electricity at a rate of 23.5 tonnes per hour. The output is 25MW exported to the National Grid. ONSITE WIND POWER GENERATION SOLAR POWER RETROFIT ‘Wrong time’ renewable energy generated by the on-site renewables and/or taken from the grid is used to produce cryogenic ‘liquid air’ which can be stored easily to generate electricity at times of peak load. The liquid air can also be shipped off-site and used to power ‘Dearman engines’ to provide cold and power. ENERGY FROM WASTE BIO POWER PLANT 25MW 10.3MW Solar panels mounted on the roof of industrial units generates clean electricity which can be fed into the local microgrid. The new 10.3MW Birmingham Bio Power Plant uses gasification technology to generate electricity from recovered wood waste. Webster Horsfall Wire Manufacturing Operation The AMR centre will devlop advanced technologies to recover strategic elements and critical materials using advanced processes and robotic waste seperation technologies. CNG FILLING STATION Natural Gas from the Grid is compressed for use in CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) powered vehicles. The gas treatment plant improves the methane quality and content in order to make it suitable for injection into the gas grid. Filling station provides clean LPG and CNG for refuelling vehicles. The Tyseley Environmental Enterprise District covers over 230 businesses and around 100 hectares of traditional industrial land. 107,000 tonnes/year CO2 SAVING REDUCE TOTAL CO2 EMISSIONS BY 60% BY 2027 FROM 1990 LEVELS Advanced Materials Recycling: Research Development Centre Biomethane Plant COMMUNITY ENERGY ENABLEMENT HUB Funding from the Local Growth Fund will enable the creation of a facility to help in the development of bottom-up distributed energy solutions that meet the needs of communities. This will help communities deliver cleaner more efficient solutions for their energy services. ENERGY SKILLS ACADEMY UNIVERSITY TECHNICAL COLLEGE BUSINESS ACCELERATOR AND SME SUPPORT HUB INPUTS High Feedstock Flexibility o Animal Manure o Agricultural Residues o Straw, Husk o Food Waste o Organic Waste o Sewage Sludge o Municipal Solid Waste o Biogas Digestage BIOCHAR BY PRODUCT The SME Support Hub will help local businesses consider more sustainable and efficient ways to deliver the energy services that their business require. This could be through the introduction of new energy technologies, systems integration, or through new energy business models. As a waste product, the TCR process produces “Biochar” which is useful as a soil improver for agricultural purposes. (TCR PLANT) BIO-BATTERY: THERMAL CATALYTIC REFORMING The hydrogen filling station supplies green hydrogen from both the electrolyser and bio-battery thermo-catalytic reforming process. The hydrogen is clean ‘green’ hydrogen from renewables, rather than ‘brown’ hydrogen from steam reformation of methane. HYDROGEN POWERED BUSES AND TAXIS Modern fuel cell vehicles can refill at the hydrogen filling station. The hydrogen is clean ‘green’ hydrogen from renewables, rather than ‘brown’ hydrogen from steam reformation of methane. The electrolyser converts wrong-time renewable electricity into hydrogen. This can be efficiently turned back into electricity using a fuel cell. HYDROGEN ELECTROLYSER The TCR process used in the bio battery produces biodiesel from a range of feedstocks. This can be used in clean Euro IV diesel engines. Efficiency can be improved further by creating a ‘heat hybrid’ with a diesel engine. The electrolyser can be used to provide grid balancing by turning ‘wrong-time’ energy into clean hydrogen. The waste products from the anaerobic digestor can be sent to the TCR plant for further energy recovery. Inside the biodigester, biological residues are broken down in the absence of air and light ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING STATION A new Institute of Energy Technologies will be established to educate the next generation of energy engineers and nurture research into the latest energy technologies. This will be based in a signature building with exemplar energy performance and demonstrating cutting edge energy technologies. Canal Wharf on the Tyseley Energy Park site could provide a distribution point for clean fuels to river barges. Waste for the biomass plant and Energy from Waste plant could be brought in by barge as an alternative to the road BIODIESEL FILLING STATION TYSELEY ENERGY PARK Tyseley Energy Park is one of the sites within the Tyseley Environmental Enterprise District. Established in 1720, site owners Webster and Horsfall Ltd are one of Birmingham’s oldest manufacturing companies. The business has been located on the site in Tyseley for 160 years, and are best known as the manufacturer of the wire for the first successful transatlantic telegraph cable in 1866. The inventions of James Horsfall in 1850 led to the development of dynamic steel springs which made the internal combustion engine possible, and laid the foundations for growth in the automotive industries which the company still supplies today. Energy is still a key strategic business focus for the company, which supplies wire and wire ropes for the oil, gas and coal industries. The development of Tyseley Energy Park, with its emphasis on alternative low carbon energy fuels, builds on that tradition. Phase One of Tyseley Energy Park has already seen a £47 million investment into a 10MWe waste wood biomass power station, which supplies the development site with electricity. Planning permission has recently been approved for the UK’s first low-carbon refuelling station on phase two which is strategically THE TYSELEY ENVIRONMENTAL ENTERPRISE DISTRICT WILL BE A CLEAN TECHNOLOGY HUB FOR THE CITY OF BIRMINGHAM. WITH A LONG HISTORY OF INDUSTRY IN THIS AREA, THE REMAINING BUSINESSES SEEK NEW AND INNOVATIVE ENERGY SUPPLIES IN ORDER TO HELP THE REMAINING FIRMS STAY COMPETITIVE. IT IS AGAINST THAT BACKDROP OF TRANSFORMING INDUSTRIAL COMPETITIVENESS THAT THE VISION HAS BEEN CONCEIVED. ENERGY INNOVATION ZONE TYSELEY ENERGY PARK located between the city centre and Birmingham airport. Tyseley Energy Park provides a logical place to deploy refuelling infrastructure for a range of low carbon fuels. The fuels available support different transport options in the City and will improve of air quality and deliver transformational change, attracting new businesses and supporting the regeneration of the area. Tyseley Energy Park is the energy-waste nexus for the City of Birmingham. The adjoining energy-from-waste plant has long been a feature of the Tyseley skyline converting 350,000 tonnes of municipal waste into power. The plant currently produces 25MW of electricity with the potential to generate significant heat for distribution in support of the City Council’s ambitions for District Heating across the City. The new developments on Tyseley Energy Park will complement the adjoining plant with a range of innovative technologies which can transform other more complex waste streams into energy. Planning permission has recently been approved for a new thermal catalytic reforming reactor that will convert biomass into renewable energy in the form of heat and power. The installation will involve the heating of biomass in the absence of oxygen (non-combustion) to produce intermediate energy carriers (char, syngas and pyrolysis oil) for use in in a stationary CHP engine. As part of a relentless drive to green industry in the city, the next generation of waste reprocessing technologies will be developed on phase three, using clean energy to power advanced processes to support the City Council’s ambitions to become the best City nationally at recycling and recovering energy from waste. Power generated within the site will be from renewable sources including the biomass plant on phase one, solar panels and the UKs first silent revolution wind turbines. This clean energy will be used to support the growth of Webster and Horsfall Ltd manufacturing operation, as well as providing energy at a low price for the various operations planned. The site will become a crucible for research and learning, with new laboratories, educational facilities and, a research and development centre planned on phase four within a landmark building with exemplar energy performance.
