Volume 23 Issue 1 Spring 2017
Faith - Family - Friendship
2017 Theme: Anchored
For we have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.
(Hebrews 6:19)
Water is unpredictable. This is a truth you learn very quickly
working at camp. I remember taking a group out onto Rangeline
Lake for a fun afternoon of canoeing during my first summer as a
counselor. And it was fun—until it was time to head back in and I
realized that the wind had picked up. It was blowing us away
from the safety of the channel where we had launched our
canoes and out across the open lake.
I, an experienced college student, struggled to even get my canoe turned around against
the force of the wind. I looked behind me to see my campers’ boats scattered across the
lake. All I could think was that staff training did not prepare me for this! as I watched the
canoes get tossed around by the wind.
In the end, I had to paddle up to each boat individually and help tow them to the nearest
shoreline. Once everyone was finally safely on shore, we walked back to main camp
leaving a scattered array of empty boats and canoe paddles behind us. It was quite the
adventure!
That was a day when we could have used an anchor. An anchor is what secures your boat
against the wind and the waves. It’s what keeps your boat safe in the storms. It’s what
protects your boat from getting blown off course and lost. It’s what secures your boat
from crashing against the rocks.
Our theme this year at Camp Luther is ANCHORED. It’s based on the above verse in
Hebrews, which promises us that the hope we have in Jesus Christ is an anchor for our
soul, firm and secure. All the things that an anchor is, Jesus Christ is for us.
We have the hope that He is with us no matter what. We have the hope that we can trust
Him no matter what we’re facing in life. We have the hope of resurrection, of life after
death, because Jesus defeated death, defeated sin,
and made a way for us to be with God through His
death on the cross. That’s what it means that Jesus
is our anchor, and we’re incredibly excited to dive
into the theme of ANCHORED this year at Camp
Luther.

Give the Gift of
Camp
“He ToldUs He Didn’t Think aboutUs
theWholeWeek!”
Camp programs can be measured by
the number of participants, the income
generated for ministry, and the
mission impact to each participant. As
we approach our 12th
year of Every Kid
to Camp, let’s consider the value of this
unique ministry.
Number of Participants: Over the last 11 years 2490
children have attended Camp Luther through Every Kid to
Camp! Income for Ministry: Since 2006, $765,565 has
been given to Every Kid to Camp to provide camp at no
cost to these 2490 children. Mission Impact: While more
difficult to measure, the impact on the life of an individual
child is at the core of our purpose. Listen to what these
parents say about the gift of Every Kid to Camp.
“Our daughter came home fromcamp rejuvenatedand
stronger in faith. We love campas muchas she does!!!
Thank you!”
“Alexgained a lot of independence during hisweek at
camp. He alsocame home excited about God. He now
prays regularly andcan'twait to start Sunday School in the
fall.”
“Elizabeth started reading from her Bible as soonas we left
camp. She was filled witha new appreciation of learning
about God and Jesus.”
Your commitment to the Every Kid to Camp fund is truly
transforming lives. It is through your support that these
children develop meaningful Christ-centered friendships,
experience the mentorship of a counselor, discover unique
gifts and talents, and are given hope through the sharing
of the Gospel of Jesus. Your support truly brings joy and
hope to these children.
This is the perfect time to make your first gift or renew
your commitment to Every Kid to Camp. We were recently
blessed with a $20,000 Matching Gift from our friends at
MCL, Inc., Pulaski, WI. They believe so strongly in this
ministry, they are offering a dollar for dollar match on all
gifts received between now and April 15, 2017. Please join
me in offering camp to 300 children this summer for the
very first time! www.campluther.com/give.

Camp Luther
Your gift to the Camp Luther Endowment is truly the gift that keeps on
giving. The Camp Luther Endowment and the Lee Belmas Every Kid to
Camp Endowment are in place to bless this ministry for years to come.
Your donation to these endowment funds through a direct gift, bequest, or
estate/planned gift will bless Camp Luther with funds for camper
scholarships and improvements to the property and facilities of camp.
Each year 5% is dispersed to camp. As these funds grow so does the sup-
port of the Camp Luther ministry.
Through the years, many individuals have used planned gifts as excellent
opportunities to benefit Camp Luther. In addition to personal satisfaction,
planned gifts offer the opportunity to minimize federal and state taxes,
maximizing the distribution of your assets. Consult with your own tax and
legal advisers to fully understand the tax implications of particular gift
plans. Camp Luther has experts available to help you through your planned
giving options to benefit your camp!

Nature is one of God’s beautiful creations. Through nature, God isable to teach us, speak to us, and provide
for us. “But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you…In his hand
is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.” (Job 12:7-10) Camp Luther is blessed to have
Keweenaw Base Camp in the Keweenaw Peninsula where you can see and experience so many of God’s
natural creations. You are invited to come see for yourself! Witness how water has carved its way through the
rock, creating waterfalls with vertical drops ranging from 5 feet to over 40 feet. Rapel down the wall of an old
copper mine and maybe even meet a miner’s family. Feel the freedom as you fly like a bird down a zip line.
Imagine sitting on a beach singing around a campfire, feeling the breeze off Lake Superior, roasting
marshmallows, and the only light you see is the reflection of the moon on the lake and stars in the sky. Now
add the gifted Camp Luther staff to guide you through the natural creations and encourage your spiritual and
physical growth.
Summer is just around the corner. Snow will soon melt and the Keweenaw Base Camp will be ready for
another season of fun and adventure, faith and fellowship. Programming includes a mix of adventure,
teambuilding, leadership development and service. KBC is blessed to have so many groups, young and old,
this summer looking for adventure, leadership and service. There are over 18 groups already registered
with over half of them coming for mission and servant programming! What a blessing it is to see the
number of people who want to make a difference in the community and others. This summer, servant
programming will include hammer and nails projects, human service, painting, wood cutting, trail blazing
and sharing God’s word. The addition of new cottages gives an opportunity for small and large groups to
come enjoy Base Camp for retreats all year long. Follow Keweenaw Base Camp on Facebook this summer
and you will see how exciting it can be!
New Cabins!
Two brand new, two bedroom cabins have been added
at Keweenaw Base Camp. These beautiful new units
each sleep six with one queen bed and two twins or
bunks in the other bedroom. The living area will have a
futon or pull out couch. You'll have a fully equipped
kitchen and a gas grill outside. Each cabin will be
available year round for your enjoyment. Contact
Janette “Swoops” Marien to reserve your week.
Vacation Rentals at KBC
Experience Keweenaw Base Camp and the beauty of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. For rent is a beautifully remodeled cottage affectionately
known as “The Barn,” that sleeps up to 6 people, plus a 3-bedroom home on Love Lake that sleeps up to 10! Nearby hiking and mountain biking
trails, waterfalls, fishing, kayaking, rock hounding, mine exploring, sightseeing, and snowmobiling make this an incredible year-round
destination. Book your stay at www.vrbo.com/633382 and www.vrbo.com/772672.

Lakeview Remodel
Camp Luther continues to upgrade cottages for you! This
winter, men from Mount Olive in Weston, WI demolished
the inside of Lakeview Cottage, preparing it for a new
layout.
Starting summer 2017, guests who stay in Lakeview will
enjoy an open-concept floor plan, with views of the lake
from the kitchen, dining area, and living room. It will
feature an entryway, island countertop, and larger
shower.
Camp is still looking for handy laborers to work on various projects this winter and
spring, including renovating Lakeview Cottage! There is need for teams of 1-3
volunteers to work 2-3 days at a time. Housing is provided. Please contact Rescue,
Maintenance & ImprovementsDirector, at 715-891-1448 or rescue@campluther.com
if you'd like to use your incredible gifts to bless the ministry at camp.
Lower Retreat Center to be
Completed!
The Camp Luther Retreat Center officially opened in June of 2001. The lower wing
facing the channel was left incomplete to allow for future expansion. Now that time
has come!
Construction in the lower level began in
March. Contractors are to be finished with
their work in May. Staff and volunteers will
complete finishing touches before the summer
begins.
This new housing area will provide camp with
28 more beds available for fall, winter, and
spring retreats. During the summer the lower
wing will be used as staff housing for the summer leadership staff who are currently
housed in the Lodge. The old Lodge, while filled with decades of wonderful memories,
no longer provides safe and suitable housing. Plans for the future use of the Lodge are
still developing.
All this has been made possible through generous gifts to the Filled with the Spirit
campaign. Thank you to all who have supported this effort with your gifts and
prayers! Look for more information on the Filled with the Spirit campaign in months
to come, including information on a new dining facility! For more information, please
contact Shelly “Indigo” Karolus, Director of Donor Relations at715-350-9421 or
shelly@campluther.com.
Prayer Requests
For the 2017 Summer Staff.
For all Junior Counselor applicants.
In thankfulness for all Camp Luther Volunteers!
For wisdom and guidance for the members of

For the Camp Luther year-round staff.
In thankfulness for all who support Camp Luther
through their prayers and financial support.
For the future of Camp Luther as the Filled with
the Spirit Campaign is shared with more people.
That all who visit Camp Luther would grow
closer to their loving Savior.

9. Register Now for Summer!
Summer programs are filling up fast! Have you registered your son, daughter,
grandchild, niece, nephew, or other significant child in your life who really needs
to experience the love of Jesus Christ through the power of camp? Check out
https://campluther.com/summercamp for more information about all of Camp
Luther’ summer programs.
Camp is not just for younger kids! See below for summer programs that are
specifically geared towards high school students. Camp truly just gets better the
older you get!
Teen Camp (Grades9-12): Are you
ready for the best week of your life?
Teen Camp is a five-night program
specifically for high schoolers that
takes everything you love about camp
up to the next level. You’ll build lasting
friendships with your fellow teen
campers and with the incredible staff
who want to challenge you to go
deeper with your relationships and with
your faith. (Teen Camp runs July 2-7.)
IMPACT (Grades8-10): IMPACT is an 8-day leadership program for teens who are
looking to make a difference. IMPACT includes all the awesomeness of camp, as
well as experiences designed to challenge you and help you grow as a leader,
including in-depth Bible studies, leadership training, an overnight adventure trip,
and meaningful service opportunities. All this takes place in a community of
people who will become some of your closest friends. (IMPACT runs concurrent
weeks throughout the summer.)
Keweenaw Base Camp
Camp Luther’s base camp is
located near Houghton, MI and
uses a unique location, close-knit
community feel, and adventure-
focused experiences to encourage
high school students in their faith.
This summer, Camp Luther is
offering three different 5-night
programs at KBC for high school students. Campers taking part in these
programs will meet at Camp Luther on Sunday for registration, then head up to
Keweenaw Base Camp for the week before returning on Friday to be picked up at
Camp Luther.
The Edge (Grades9-12): Get ready for adventure day trips, late night campfires,
challenge course activities, intentional community building, and diving deep into
the greatest adventure of all: What it means to follow Jesus Christ. (The Edge
runs June 18-23.)
Venture (Grades 10-12): Venture is recommended for campers who have
previously participated in a program at Keweenaw Base Camp. Venture builds on
programs like The Edge with an overnight adventure trip and new
challenge experiences. Get ready for more adventure, more challenge, more
faith building, and more unforgettable memories! (Venture runs July 16-21.)
Ignite (Grades 9-12): This program focuses on
intentional, mission-oriented service in the
Keweenaw Peninsula of Upper Michigan. If you
want to serve the local community, get your hands
dirty, and be challenged with what it means to love
like Jesus, this is the program for you! (Ignite runs
June 25-30.)

10. Being a (Camp Luther) Grandparent
Submitted by Jim &Kathy Wiebel
“Grandchildren are God’s way of compensating us for growing old.” (Mary H. Waldrip)
“Surely, two of the most satisfying experiences in life must be those of being a grandchild or a grandparent.” (Donald A. Norberg)
These quotations certainly summarize well some of our own feelings about the joys of being grandparents. To be blessed, first, with two
wonderful sons and their lovely wives, and now to have been gifted by them with six beautiful grandchildren in the past 11 years has made our
hearts and our lives full, indeed! Not only that, but to have received a call to serve as one of the pastors at Faith Lutheran Church, Appleton, at
precisely the same time as our first grandchild was born (bringing us back to Wisconsin from Florida) has been one of God’s great blessings in our
lives. Living only 30 miles from each family (who reside in Green Bay & Oshkosh) has allowed us to share in their lives from infancy on by
providing childcare once a week in each of their homes. Seeing life through the eyes of a child and underscoring the presence of Jesus in their
lives with one of our favorite sayings, “I love you, but Jesus loves you even more!” always brings a smile to their faces. These years are something
we wouldn’t trade for all the warm winters in Florida!
Living between our sons and their families, one of our family traditions has been to host a monthly “Family Feast” in order to celebrate special
occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays together. We’re also blessed that our sons and their wives have become active members
in their home churches where their children have been involved with regular worship and Sunday school activities. When we’ve had our
grandchildren with us for “sleepovers,” storybook reading and prayers have become a regular part of the bedtime ritual. Now that they’re
growing older, attending school concerts and sporting events have become a big part of our monthly routine. We’ve also made a priority of
planning two or three family vacations together each year in order to visit relatives and new places, as well as to strengthen our family bond.
Camp Luther has also been a big part of our family’s spiritual development and faith formation.
As soon as each child has been old enough, we’ve accompanied them to GrandKids Camp each
summer. In the second year of their eligibility, we’ve been blessedto be able to pay for their
parents to take them to KinderCamp, as well. In addition to those experiences, summer and
winter Family Camps have endeared our grandchildren to Camp Luther even more! Camp’s staff
and counselors have also been such a positive influence on each of us. Last summer, our oldest
grandchild invited three of her neighborhood friends (none of whom are active in a church) to
attend a Discovery Camp with her, made possible through the Every Kid to Camp campership
program. All four are making plans to attend camp together again this summer!
If we can offer any advice to new grandparents or to grandparents who haven’t had the
blessing of living as close to their grandchildren as we have, it would be to encourage your own
children in their spiritual walk with the Lord and, whenever possible, to reinforce that with calls,
cards, FaceTime, etc. with your grandchildren. And when they’re old enough, to invite them to
go to GrandKids Camp with you, or help to make it possible for your children and their families
to attend events at Camp Luther, or a church camp closer to them. There’s just nothing quite
like sharing your love for God and His awesome creation like spending time together at Camp
Luther! That’s been our family’s joy for over 40 years…and counting!

Campfire Stories
“I don’t want to ever see this go away.”
~Tim Mattson
As a “freshly married man,” Tim Mattson was asked if he and his wife would chaperone a youth group
event for their church. That marked the beginning of a love for Camp Luther that has brought Tim and
his family back for years. Once they had children, Tim and his wife returned for KinderCamp, and were
eventually able to get a cottage for a week each summer.
“I’ve watched my children grow up here,” Tim said. When they first came for Family Camp, his
children were six and seven. Now, even though his children are twenty-six and twenty-seven, they still
return to enjoy Camp Luther as a family. Tim is grateful for the influence Camp has had on his family’s
faith lives. “It’s one of my satisfactions in life that my children are Christians. I think that Camp Luther
has firmly bonded my kids to Christ. It’s the cement that put it all together.”
Throughout their years in Family Camp, they have also developedfriendships and traditions with
other cottagers that last beyond their week at Camp. While at Camp, the
Mattsons have carried on a tradition with other families of having a
Thursday Night Fish Fry where they fry up the fish they’ve caught on the
lake throughout the week.
The Mattsons hope to see Camp Luther continue to grow and thrive as it
provides fun and faith experiences for people.

11. Thank you,
Groot!
Groot served as a counselor at Camp
Luther in 2015 and 2016. After graduating
from Concordia University-Wisconsin in
December, he is serving as Camp’s
Program Assistant this winter and spring.
Welcome, Rock!
Hi, I am Rock. I work at the Welcome Desk here at Camp Luther, meeting and greeting all visitors, campers and parents.
If you have a question, you can start with me and I will find the answer or someone who will have an answer.
I was brought up in Mt. Prospect, IL, a northwest suburb of Chicago. I attended John Hersey High School and played
flute and piccolo in the band. After going to a few colleges, I ended up at Roosevelt University in Chicago and
graduated with a BSBA-Accounting. I obtained my CPA and worked in public accounting at A M & G in Chicago. I also
worked as an internal auditor for Sears/Homart/Coldwell Banker. My last job in Chicago was for 25 years at Margie
Korshak, Inc., a public relations firm, as their CFO. In 2009 I headed north to live with my aging father in Three Lakes,
WI. I have had a number of jobs here in the Northwoods.
I started at Camp Luther in November 2016 and I couldn’t be happier! What a blessing! I live in Three Lakes with my two
shi-tzus, Rosie and Allie. My many hobbies include knitting, crocheting and beading jewelry.
