What is SAP Hana?
What we call “SAP Hana” from the IBM Systems standpoint is a Workload mainly based on:
- One Client (running in an end user computer). Out of our scope.
- One Presentation Server [optional] . SAP Fiori. UX.
- One (or more) Application Servers (running ABAP or Java).
- One Data Base. (In-Memory, Columnar, Insert Only, Compressed…)
- Other components… (Central Instance…)
Types:
• OLTP: Online Transactional Process. (ERP)
• OLAP: Online Analytical Process. (BW)
What is SAP S/4HANA? (OLTP Enterprise Resource Planning)
SAP S/4HANA is a future-ready enterprise resource planning (ERP) system with built-in intelligent technologies,
including AI, machine learning, and advanced analytics. It transforms business processes with intelligent automation
and runs on SAP HANA – a market-leading in-memory database that offers real-time processing speeds and a
dramatically simplified data model.
What is SAP BW/4HANA? (OLAP Business Warehouse)
SAP BW/4HANA is a packaged data warehouse based on SAP HANA. As the on-premise data warehouse layer of
SAP’s Business Technology Platform, it allows you to consolidate data across the enterprise to get a consistent,
agreed-upon view of your data.

IBM is your trusted
partner for SAP HANA
IBM Power Systems technology
leadership drives business success:
• Up to 16 Production VMs ded/don
---
or up to 15 Production VMs ded/don
and unlimited number of production VMs
in shared processor pool
limited to 1 NUMA node size (max 4 TB, 6-12 cores/chip)
on one single server
• Largest – fully virtualized –
HANA BW / BW/4HANA ScaleUp: 24 TB
BW / BW/4HANA ScaleOut up to 16x 24 TB = 384 TB
• Largest – fully virtualized –
HANA BS & S4H ScaleUp: 24 TB
S/4HANA ScaleOut up to 4x 24 TB = 96 TB
Using Power Systems the
cost for HANA landscape just
drops by 50%

The cores of the Power9 processor are supported and
fed by a 128-Mbyte L3 cache based on nonuniform
cache architecture (NUCA). The L3 cache is designed as
12 regions of a 20-way associative cache with advanced
replacement policies. The L3 cache system is, in turn,
fed by an on-chip fabric that delivers up to 7 Tbytes per
second (TBps) of on-chip bandwidth.
The Power9 processor has a 512-Kbyte,
private, eight-way set-associative L2
cache per SMT8 core. This cache also
functions as a privately shared cache
between two SMT4 cores. The Power9
processor has a total of 120 Mbytes of L3
NUCA cache.

Scale UP vs Scale OUT
Scale UP means growing
resources inside the same
enclosure (CPU, Memory,
Storage…)
Scale OUT means growing
number of servers to increase the
number of resources.
SAP ERP à It cannot be designed as a Scale OUT solution
SAP BW à It can be designed as a Scale OUT solution

Server virtualization security is critical for DB workloads since many

• The PowerVM hypervisor has only had one

demand for mission-critical workloads
• The VIOS, which is part of the overall

What we call “SAP Hana” from the IBM Systems standpoint is a Workload mainly based on: - One Client (running in an end user computer). Out of our scope. - One Presentation Server [optional] . SAP Fiori. UX. - One (or more) Application Servers (running ABAP or Java). - One Data Base. (In-Memory, Columnar, Insert Only, Compressed…) - Other components… (Central Instance…) Types: • OLTP: Online Transactional Process. (ERP) • OLAP: Online Analytical Process. (BW) What is SAP S/4HANA? (OLTP Enterprise Resource Planning) SAP S/4HANA is a future-ready enterprise resource planning (ERP) system with built-in intelligent technologies, including AI, machine learning, and advanced analytics. It transforms business processes with intelligent automation and runs on SAP HANA – a market-leading in-memory database that offers real-time processing speeds and a dramatically simplified data model. What is SAP BW/4HANA? (OLAP Business Warehouse) SAP BW/4HANA is a packaged data warehouse based on SAP HANA. The L3 cache is designed as 12 regions of a 20-way associative cache with advanced replacement policies. The L3 cache system is, in turn, fed by an on-chip fabric that delivers up to 7 Tbytes per second (TBps) of on-chip bandwidth. The Power9 processor has a 512-Kbyte, private, eight-way set-associative L2 cache per SMT8 core. This cache also functions as a privately shared cache between two SMT4 cores.
