"If a place can be defined as relational,
historical and concerned with identity,
then a space which cannot be defined as
relational, or historical, or concerned with
identity will be a non-place."
It depends on the perspective of the
person if it is a non-place or not. Non-
places are designed in a way to enhance
our sense of both atomization and
anonymity

Concept Schiphol Bridge
Bridges reduce the gap between people,
cultures, bridge time and history.
Several famous bridges all over the world:
• Golden Gate Bridge
• Brooklyn Bridge
• Tsing Ma Bridge
• Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge
• Clifton Suspension Bridge
• Storbaelt
• Schiphol Bridge
All these bridges have one main thing in
common: connecting people, countries and
cultures!
Schiphol BridgeThe concept...
The concept...

Golden Gate Bridge
Storbaelt
Nowadays people use Schiphol as an “entrance to the world”.
We want to make Schiphol a “Bridge to the world”
A bridge consists of two ends: depart and arrival, from A to B.
The bridge is placed in the departure terminal where people wait before
boarding.
Schiphol Bridge is all about leaving travelers marks.
Leaving marks, photos and footprints
Photos and footprints
• Create & transfer emotions
• Create an ‘organized chaos’
No actual preset patterns. The environment is no longer ‘clean’ and
‘sterile’

Appearance
• biological
• acquired
In this concept appearance relates to the perception element of the cultural
determinants
Perception
• Important
• Unimportant
If a person has some recognizing (with his own culture) during the perception there is
more change to be rated as important and be memorized.

  • 22. Nowadays people use Schiphol as an “entrance to the world”. We want to make Schiphol a “Bridge to the world” A bridge consists of two ends: depart and arrival, from A to B. The bridge is placed in the departure terminal where people wait before boarding. Schiphol Bridge is all about leaving travelers marks. Leaving marks, photos and footprints Photos and footprints • Create & transfer emotions • Create an ‘organized chaos’ No actual preset patterns. 1. Mark augeeee .. book .. states Everyplace can actually be a non-place, but it depends on the person if a place is a non-place or not. But when looking beyond the individual there are places who are in general, for most people, non-places. Like an airport, train station, shopping mall, supermarket, etc.
  2. Depart arrival travelers Has always been and will always been
  3. Travelers are there because Mostly everything in the airport is related to this function
  4. is supossed to be.. Preset patterns The location of everything that is placed within the building is planned. Each day these preset locations are the same and all marks of the people are removed.
  5. Schiphol airport is non-personal to it’s visitors. Each individual is one of thousands visitors per day and is supposed to behave in preset patterns. When an individual deviates from preset patterns security issues are created.
  6. There are a few aspects within in the airport that communicates a regional (Amsterdam) or national (The Netherlands) identity, but there are so many standard features that the regional and national fall into oblivion.
  7. It depends on the perspective of the person how these emotions will be. The perspective of an employee is way different then a passenger who visits Schiphol the first time. They have a different level of recognizing and feel less or more connected to the environment.
  8. To make a place we have to create a concept that will contain the opposite of these aspects
  9. did you know..
  10. We choose schiphol because we never visited another airport. Frank vanaf nu
  11. 42% + 20 = 62% = 27.032.000 total leisure/pleasure travelers. 33% + 4% + 1% = 38% = 16.568.000 total business travelers
  12. Scale
  13. For example if you see someone smiling on a photo, the photo transfer a happy emotion. No actual preset patterns. With this the environment is no longer ‘clean’ and ‘sterile’, because there are a lot of different, by the travelers themselves added, photos and colored footprints. Kevin nu
  14. Photos of all different types of cultures are shown on the bridge within the cultural determinants appearance of people is a major factor in the Schiphol Bridge concept- includes skin colour, colour and the shape of eyes, texture and color of hair, and body structure. - Acquired appearance includes clothing, hair dress, etc. Every human perceives and is constantly making difference between important and unimportant. The decision between important and unimportant is made within milliseconds. ..slide tekst.. The concept will attract attention due to the appearance. It depends on the person if the bridge is rated as important or not. Because the bridge contains photos of people of all kind of continents, countries and cultures, the perception while seeing the bridge has a high possibillty to be rated as important due to the recognizing a person has to its own culture or background shown on the photos. Frank
  15. created of glass, Handrail 120 cm tall The bridge is placed in the departure terminal where people wait before boarding. walk beneath 5 m width 20 m long in total 50.000 photos 6 screens to add photo’s Oldest one first replaced
  16. travelers walk up to the interface, they see themselves in a live view . They touch the screen with camera icon and text make picture. Possible for 1 person or group
  17. After they touched the screen an alert appears counting from 5 till 1 . When the counter hits 0 a photo will be made .
  18. When travelers touch Ok the photo will be transferred to the handrail, just below the interface. Travelers can touch their photo on the handrail and slide them wherever they like. But when travelers are not satisfied with the photo they touch delete, an alert appears, photo deleted, next the livestream will appear again and a new photo can be taken. Once the photo is placed on the Schiphol Bridge all photos can be touched and dragged around the handrail. All travelers can touch and drag all photos not only their own photo. By this the positions of all photos is adjustable by everyone who wants to do it. The bridge is built of transparent glass and the photos create the color and look of the bridge. Without any photos there is no ‘actual’ bridge (because it’s transparent). All photos from different travelers will complete the brigde. This creat some kind of we-did-it-together-feeling.

  20. At the glass floor of the bridge the footsteps of the passing travelers will appear. There are 5 different footprint colors, blue, black, red, yellow, and green. At a certain time the complete floor will be covered entirely with footprints. Each footprints (can) overlap other footprints. They will not be deleted by only disappear because they are covered with a new footprint. When someone walks up the bridge his or her footsteps will be connected to one of the 5 colors. These colors were used to form the Olympic Games Symbol, The Olympic rings. Every flag of a country participating in the Olympics includes at least one of the color
