BENGT STREIJFFERT, LUND UNIVERSITY
FOODBEST NETWORK MEETING, APRIL 5 2013
Active KICs
3 KICs are active since 2010:
- Climate KIC on climate change
mitigation and adaptation
- EIT ICT Labs on future innovation and
communication technology
- KIC InnoEnergy on sustainable energy
All with good results!
Partnership and
organisation
• All KICs:
– are organised into Co-Location Centres (CLCs), i.e.
geographical locations involving universities, research
centres, companies, other support organisations (e.g.
innovation parks, VCs, etc.)
– have different ‘levels’ of partners (i.e. core partners,
affiliate/associate partners), and built over time a
partnership policy
– have a CEO, a director for each CLC, executives
overseeing the activities on the 3 axes of the
innovation triangle

Good advice from
active KICs
“It is very complicated and often heavy to run a
KIC with six nodes, members with varying status
and a mix of companies, universities and NGOs
in up to ten countries with different traditions.”
Therefore
Keep (what you can) simple
Legal status
• European association
• Possibly six associated nodes/regions
• Node/region includes all members within the
node
• Co-Location Centre is a geographical address
within the node
”Keep it simple”
