3. Library
Need to understand
the studio model
How to staff?! Who?
How many?
Training?
BUT
Have other desks
nearby and library
staff being flexible
Writing center
Already using studio model
Have a solid idea about staffing
needs
Have peer consultants trained!
BUT
Their space was MUCH smaller
They did everything on their
own - not integrated with
another entity!
Student Multimedia Services
Wanted a welcoming, more pubic
space
Had student staff
Trained students
BUT
Heavy Technology and
Infrastructure Needs
Services isolated and must be
scheduled
4.
5. How did we get there in 9 months?
“It’s a prototype!”
Fear!
Frustration!
11. Lessons Learned
● Find a useful framework. Use it to establish shared principles before tackling the hard questions and
choices
● Collaboration is difficult. Don’t leave assumptions unspoken. Use an outside facilitator to help
shape a shared framework or mindset.
● Include patrons/users/students on your team if at all possible.
● Project management will create invisible labor. Plan for this, and recognize and reward that work.
● Commit to an iterative process & culture of experimentation.
● Give yourself credit for the things you do accomplish.
