  1. Email from Clara/LIS dept email to host virtual intern – 4-8 week long virtual only! I like hosting interns and thought this challenge of getting some work accomplished with a virtual only intern, internationally would be a good way to be more global, mentor students, learn more about other cultures and expand my librarianship. DILL is a two-year international master for elite information professionals to provide them with the skills and competencies to navigate the rapidly evolving world of digital libraries. NOTE: I did have to go through the lawyers here on campus to sign an agreement that it was okay for us to work together U of Parma (led for DILL) and UNCG!
  2. The European Union's Erasmus Mundus programme aims to enhance quality in higher education through scholarships and academic cooperation between Europe and the rest of the world. Erasmus Mundus comprises three actions: Joint programmes. Partnerships. Attractiveness programmes. Erasmus Mundus Master program means they get a joint degree by the participating universities Two year program Participating universities: Oslo and Akershus University College, Tallinn University, University of Parma Spend one semester at each of these institutions and decide where to spend the last semester for writing the thesis Additionally the lectures are joined by exchange students of the participating universities, we had people from: Spain, Czech Republic, Latvia, France and Turkey for one semester
  3. First semester is in Oslo, Norway Pictures of the campus and inside one of the buildings
  4. Norway: 5 million people live there Capital is Oslo with 613 000 people living in Oslo Oslo is in the south of the country: Show Oslo with pointer Many islands and fjords

Oslo harbour with the town hall in the background Oslo opera house, you can walk on the roof, they give concerts outside of the building with the crowd watching from the roof, next to the Oslo fjord Karl Johans street: most popular street, leading to the castle, the parliament is on this street, famous hotels and shops Bergen: city on the west coast of the country, very different architecture from Oslo, small wooden houses, calm, peaceful

  7. Estonia: Neighbouring countries are Latvia and Russia and in the north Finland, but the Baltic sea is in between 1,3 million people in total live there 420 000 people live in the capital Tallinn For my impression the winter was quite cold, -13 degree fahrenheit, in summer 77 degree fahrenheit

Third semester is spend in Parma, Italy Summer school in Florence Pictures: Downtown in Pisa DILL group with university staff inside the University of Parma International group, DILL 5 group: 16 people from 15 different countries: Italy, Lithuania, Hungary, Brazil, Serbia, the US, Bangladesh, Poland, Iran, Vietnam, Russia, Spain, Greece and Germany

Italy: Central location in the south of Europe 60 million people live there Parma: region Emilia-Romagna Famous for food: Parma prosciutto, Parmesano cheese We got the best food in Italy 187 000 inhabitants Florence for summer school: we spend one month there A little more south Very beautiful city

  13. Population – about 30 mln people. Capital - Tashkent unitary, constitutional, presidential republic, comprising 12 provinces, 1 autonomous republic, and 1 independent city
  14. 7 high schools, including 3 branches of international universities: Westminster, Turin and Singapore. And 3 Russian universities Students attend school Monday through Saturday during the school year,with official education concluding at the end of the 9th grade. Post secondary school, students routinely attend trade or technical colleges

  16. DILL was to cover my accommodations (expect when I travel weekends on my own) == 500 euros (but really they only covered about 5 nights stay, in a recidenzia. They covered maybe one meal, rest was on my own. Applied for a got the $1000 Kohler Travel fund from UNCG – covered most of my plane fare. The libraries helped with a couple hundred (not sure how much!) toward rest of plan fare, bus to town, etc.
  17. Brought my mom too (she has just lost her mother and never been to Europe, needed to get away) Almost two week in Parma, really 10 days with travel time. Personal time was long weekend trips to Bologna and Venice, also flew out of Milan. Spend several days attending DILL presentations by others, meeting in small groups with visiting professors for the DILL program from all over the global including Australia, France, UK, USA and Sri Lanka.  We had some amazing discussions about digital libraries with truly international perspectives.  Also visited libraries in towns when I could. Sala Borsa in Bologna, with ancient roman ruins beneath the floors!!
  18. In Parma, I lectured to the students on Creating the Digital User Experience at UNCG Libraries, showcasing  we do collaboratively as a library to virtually support our students such as reference virtual help, our digital library collections, our hosting services, apps, and tool creations, our online teaching, etc. The DILL students asked many questions about our technologies and services, and by the end of my half day talk, I had many DILL students asking if they could work at our library!   My other lecture day covered Designing eLearningDigital Objects where I discussed basic e-learning concepts, instructional design process, and technologies used to create tutorials and online learning at UNCG Libraries.  This led to my 2nd virtual student … up next! While in Parma, I also connected with our LIS dept - primarily the Digital Libraries course and professor. Together we formed a secret Facebook group connecting students at both UNCG and DILL to discuss digital libraries. We pulled off a synchronous virtual session using Blackboard Collaborate to join both groups virtually, with video and audio. DILL students introduced themselves, shared their country (they came from 17 different countries across the world!) of origin, and what they were doing in libraries. Though the session was short and mainly involved introductions and sharing – not discussion - the goal was to show the possibility for synchronous, global connecting of librarians and students and its potential for collaboration. Lastly I also visited one day with the Settore Biblioteche in Parma – librairans asked me a lot of questions about how we do things, and  we all discussed libraries and our practices.  They were also impressed by what UNCG Libraries does for their students and said we had the “ideal academic library.”  and they were really excited about our Irma Minerva….
  19. Minerva was an ancient Italian goddess of handicrafts and patroness of guilds and thus was the patroness of women. As the goddess of skills, particularly those of the hand and mind, she guided male craftsmen and warriors, associations which connected her to the powerful Etruscan goddess Menrva. As the virgin daughter of the supreme god Juppiter, she became identified with the Greek goddess Athena, daughter of Zeus, and is thus frequently portrayed with the attributes of that goddess—an owl, helmet, shield, spear, and aegis (see the cape above and below, wreathed in snakes and emblazoned with the head of Medusa). Minerva was one of the trio of Capitoline deities in Rome; along with Juno, she shared the Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus on the Capitoline Hill above the Roman Forum. For the communication and collaboration we used several tools of which I put the logos here: mainly Skype and Email, but also Blackboard Collaborate and Adobe Connect to be able to show documents and share screens, google docs. I used Adobe Captivate to do screencasts and edit them for tutorials I did on the tools Mendeley (organizing literature and get into contact with people who are researching in the same field) and Mindomo (to create mind maps, present them and share them) Challenges included google in Germany is different than here! She has some personal stuff going on that delayed the final tutorials a bit With no Captivate program I can not easily tweak her tutorial to update it now that its old Pros included Perfect english speaker and writer Learned alot about the culture and more about real DILL program experience from her – also about how much more sustainable germany is (she did not understand what incandescent light bulbs were) Co-wrote an invited book chapter on how virtual internships are sustainabele
  23. We met while I was in Parma. She worked at U of Parma and assisted with the DILL program Instructional Design & E-learning at UniPR Co-Lab Research Center, University of Parma, Italy Co-lab is to Learn Share and Collaborate! She was also considering going through the program too… hence contacted me to work together. We connected while I was in Parma! Much higher level work from her as an academic with experience and strong interests.
