Today’s session is all about living in a digital world and how we can exploit the relevant technologies as a researcher. I want you to think outside your research, shout out what digital technologies do you currently use? E.g. mobile phone, Sky HD. How has your use of technology changed in the past 5 or 10 years? Brainstorm 3min
Now consider your life as a researcher. All of your activities as a researcher are seen by others around you in several ways
In your groups, think about current activities and tools you use, digital or otherwise, and how others may view them. Now think about how technology can be used to support those activities. I have given you a few example activities 5min Feedback to the group 5min
We have so far concentrated on how technology can be used to further your research. Now I want you to have a think about your digital identity. The first step in discovering your digital identity is to Google yourself. I have a uniquely spelt surname so this is easy for me but you could Google your name plus location e.g. Manchester to narrow down the results. Your ultimate goal is to have at least the first page of links directed to you in some way.
Here are a few activities I brainstormed around researcher roles. I have broken them down into the 4 main activities of writing/reading, multimedia, networking and information management. I have then listed some tools you might use to complete each activity. (OA = open access) (Connotea = free online reference management for all researchers, clinicians and scientists)
Here are 3 examples of using web 2.0 tools to develop your digital identity
