How is M&S responding to the climate agenda?
• When we launched Plan A in 2007 we had 29 climate targets and since then have reduced our absolute
operational carbon footprint by 70%
• Large non-intensive user of carbon – energy equivalent to 1% of turnover (c17% pre-tax profits)
• Calculated our full scope carbon footprint – well over 90% attributed to our wider value chain
• Engage in wide range of voluntary initiatives
• 1st major retailer to be ISO 50001 certified and held Carbon Trust Standards on carbon, water & waste
• Only major retailer with carbon neutral global operations in accordance with PAS 2060 since 2014
• Published a Science Based Target Initiative approved target in 2017:
– Aim to reduce GHG emissions from M&S operations worldwide by 80% compared to 2006/07, on route to a 90%
reduction by 2035 (Scope 1 and 2)
– Reduce our indirect GHG emissions from upstream & downstream sources by at least 13.3m tonnes (Scope 3)
• Publish annual updates in our Plan A Report, a more detailed GHG and Climate Change Performance Report and
an Qualifying Explanatory Statement in Support of PAS 2060 declarations
• Planning started for post 2025 zero emission or zero emission capable controls coming into effect in key
metropolitan areas

What barriers and conundrums are getting in the way of action?
• UK political uncertainty and leadership
• Erosion of global policy coordination on climate change
• Technology constraints and ability to control or influence infrastructure
• Huge measurement, scope and data challenges
• Long-term decision-making vs short-term investment hurdles
• Unintended consequences of limited holistic or systemic thinking – including climate adaptation
• Is the advent of Science Based Targets causing more confusion?
• Lot’s of uncertainty post 2020 – how will this impact the offsets that are available?
• Not enough organisations stepping up to take action or demand a step change in ambition – how can we make
this more real?
• Is society ready for some of the big changes that are required?
• Are we transparent enough?
• Are we failing fast enough?
