Proverbs: Wisdom for Life Part 4 - 23 September 2018 - Bruce McCallum
1.
2. Long before modern medicine and
psychology, Proverbs taught that emotional
well-being was connected to physical health
and well-being.
3. 1. Jesus is our ultimate source of wisdom
Mark 6:2 (NIV)
When the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the
synagogue, and many who heard Him were amazed.
"Where did this man get these things?" they asked.
"What's this wisdom that has been given him, that he
even does miracles!
4. Luke 11:31 (NIV)
The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the
men of this generation and condemn them; for she came
from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon's wisdom,
and now one greater than Solomon is here.
5. 2. Jesus is greater than Solomon - and wiser
It’s always wiser to let mercy triumph over your judgement
Proverbs 24:12 (NIV)
If you say, "But we knew nothing about this," does not he
who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who guards
your life know it? Will he not repay each person according to
what he has done?
6. It’s always wiser to let the Holy Spirit write on your heart
than to recite a Proverb off by heart.
Proverbs 3:3 (NIV)
Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them
around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.
7. 2 Corinthians 3:3 (NIV)
You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of
our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of
the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of
human hearts.
8. It’s always wiser to listen to the whispers in your heart
than the shouts of a man.
Proverbs 1:20-21 (NIV)
Wisdom calls aloud in the street, she raises her voice in
the public squares; at the head of the noisy streets she
cries out, in the gateways of the city she makes her
speech
9. And remember this: Solomon wasn’t all wisdom.
He didn’t follow his own wisdom
1 Kings 11:9 (NIV)
The LORD became angry with Solomon because his heart
had turned away from the LORD, the God of Israel, who
had appeared to him twice.
10. 3. Wisdom is not about your age
Luke 2:42-48 (NIV)
When He was twelve years old, they went up to the
Feast, according to the custom. … After three days they
found Him in the temple courts, sitting among the
teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.
Everyone who heard Him was amazed at His
understanding and His answers.
11. Luke 2:52 (NIV)
And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in
favour with God and men.
12. 4. Education and status do not make you
wise – actions do!
Matthew 11:18-19 (NIV)
For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say,
'He has a demon.' The Son of Man came eating and
drinking, and they say, 'Here is a glutton and a drunkard,
a friend of tax collectors and "sinners."' But wisdom is
proved right by her actions.
13. Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV)
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I
will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from
me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find
rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is
light."
14. 5. Wisdom is often opposite to common sense
1 Corinthians 1:18 (NIV)
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who
are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the
power of God.
1 Corinthians 1:25 (NIV)
For the foolishness of God is wiser than man's wisdom,
and the weakness of God is stronger than man's strength.
15. 6. God loves to choose foolish things
1 Corinthians 1:26-29 (NIV)
Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not
many of you were wise by human standards; not many were
influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the
foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the
weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the
lowly things of this world and the despised things - and the
things that are not - to nullify the things that are, so that no
one may boast before Him.
17. 7. If you are truly wise, you boast in the Lord.
1 Corinthians 1:30-31 (NIV)
It is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has
become for us wisdom from God - that is, our
righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it
is written: "Let him who boasts boast in the Lord."
18. Main message of Proverbs
“You never really thought enough about
anything”
19. Long before modern medicine and
psychology, Proverbs taught that emotional
well-being was connected to physical health
and well-being.
