Everything is digital right? Also this conference is digital paying, travelling, school.
Let’s see some numbers shall we?
Something has changed in the perception of the digital world
The line between offline and online is blurred. Now we have far more Information than we need, we have an infobesity problem: notifications, videos, sounds. We are so overwhelmed but all the information that we can barely distinguish what’s real from what’s fake.
And In this time of pandemics, digitalization has pervaded every aspect of our lives.
New habits have formed.
Neighbourhood shops and Resturants have switched to e-commerce and delivery. A lot of people started to work from home. The Manufacturing Industry is accelerating toward the Industry 4.0 paradigm (paradaim)
Digital transformation is no longer a matter of business advantage, it’s a matter of business survival.
Yet something is still missing in this transformation process
We are only scratching the surface
And the transformation process so far has not proven that successful (saxesful)
So clearly there is a big elephant in the room.Something doesn’t feel quite right, something is still missing.A lot of digital transformation is happening but we have few cases of successful transitionsWhy is digital transformation so faulty? I wil try to give my answer starting with people
Let’s stard with one of the most intersting phrases of the Agile Manifesto.Agile is a work methodology invented by Coders and Developers to work in a better way.And this phrase always amazed me because it’s so straight to the point. There are no golden processes o magic tools that solve problem, only people and interactions.
So experts from the tecnology side say we need to focus on people. And experts from the business side say that we need to focus on technology?
It’s always like this.We speak different languages in different enviorments and history teaches us that if we build bridges instead of walls, and foster diversity, (PAUSA) we as humanity are capable of wonderful things.
We need hybrid professionals who can move through technologies and humanites, buillders of bridges, facilitators of conversations, a sort of rosetta stone for the digital age where technology, business and humanities can find a common language. In the history of technology we saw different hybrid professionals like that emerge:In the 1950s it was Ergonomists
In the 1970s we saw the Rise of Human Factors experts
In the 1990s came the Usabilty Experts and the Information ArchitectsIn the 2000s Ux Designers and Service Designers started appearing
And what about Today? If you are attending this event you probably are that type of hybrid professional who can blend multiple skills and help the world navigate this digital transformation.
but let’s dig into an example
So where do we start?let’s say that a Manufacturing Company has trouble with Logistics. We the experts arrive, collect the brief then after 1 o 2 months we present a shiny tech solution, then we try to adapt our technology to the process and in the end we do training to make people capable of using the new tecnology
It’s a re-assuring way of doing things. One stakeholder asks a question, and you the consultant always have answers. They pay we do, We haveanswers to their problems. We are like magicians, who can change the world and save companies from the digital clash, right?!
From my point of view this is a case of solutions in search of a problem. We are not really solving the problem we are only selling the solution. It’s a typical garbage in garbage out scenario.
But as I said we need to talk about people not process or technology! So let’s start with a Behavior Model, a conceptualization of how we can persuade people to change. Fogg is an expert of persuasion models applied to technology.Don’t worry We are not trying to trick anyone, this model describes how we can make technology easier for everyone.
In this model We have two main factors Motivation and Ability. If we want to trigger a behavior change in people we need to design solutions that are easy to use and give people motivation to use it.
Think of an ERP design that saves time in data entry and lets employees focus on the more meaningful parts of the job.
My take is that you can’t propose a solution if you don’t understand the texture of an organization. You need to have a deep understanding of the problem, of the process, of the organization and of what motivates people. So as an expert you need to start by asking questions, like a child eager to know the world, full of curiosity! You must start every project with a why!Instead of collecting a brief of the problem start with an evaluation of the company, ask a lot of questions, involve the people. Take a deep breath and immerse yourself in the process with the people. Then try to do little experiments, don’t start big. Learn from these experiments, failure it’s allowed.
By digging deeper you often undestand that the problem is simpler than they thought.Often digital transformation is a sympthom of crooked organizational dyamics or old clunky processes where technology is called upon to solve human problems.
Once you’ve found the right insight and things feel right for everyone move slow but steady toward the transformation.
If you started with a small group, involve other departmens and make sure that the solution makes their life easier. That way adoption will spread and the transformation will have started. You will have created an interface between the human and the technology: a point where they can meet, interact and benefit from one another.
I know that
Up to now we’ve focused on people, but there is something else that we need to address
Could you picture Google like a giant library?Close your eyes for a moment and try to imagine a digital place with all the knowledg of the world like the Library of Alexandria
It’s huge right? A lot of corridors a lot of shelves, stairs.
Yet, a google search is one of the easiest things anyone can do. And the very reason why we all use it. When we do digital transformation we are designing a digital place. The difficult thing is to do it right. As Andrea Resmini, an Architect and information architect, once told me «I don’t know how to build the perfect room for a person but I know that a living room with no light source and with uncomfortable chairs is bad>Then why we are so stubborn and continue to replicate things that are so unhandy and inefficient in the analogic world in the digital world?
Sometimes It seems like Digital transformation is all about changing physical buttons into digital ones.Let’s take FORMS for example. We know the value of a good form, but still, a form is something very unhandy to fill out. It Could be a login form, a sign up form a check-out form. But it’s still only a copy of the analogic way of asking information.
We are so entangled with the analogic point of view that this is anchoring us down in designing solutions which could be more feasable for the digital world.
Today with covid19 it’s common to see Digital Classrooms, everybody is mad about e-learing it’s the 2000s again! But still you see a lot of replication of a fisical class room into a digital one. Retaing only the bad aspects and none of the good ones. The physical class room is designed to put all the attention on the teacher. It’s something embedded in the room. When we design digital classrooms we try to apply the same paradigm. sincronicity over asincronicity. Passive learning instead of active learning.
What would happen if we designed a digtal learning experience from scratch? Khan Academy to name one! a digital place for learning that uses the power of asincronicity to push materials, gamification and digital interactions to motivate students and it’s not bound by time or place.
This is the kind of mindset change that we need to carry out a digital transformation that will improve and empower our experience.
Only if we understand the full extent of the digital potential, we will be able to leverage, and not suffer this paradigm shift.
And to do this, we must free our minds of all the boundaries of the physical world, and develop solutions that are radically different from their analog competitors. We must adopt a digital-first mindset, acknowledge that everything is connected that everything could be de-centralized and that we are still at the beginning of the journey, we still don’t have consilidated tools to navigate the complexity and the potential, we are still in a phase of trial and error. And we must hurry up, because in this moment even as we are speaking, the digital tools are changing the world, both digital and phisical.
We have the responsability to contribute to the impact that the digital technologies will have on the world, and help the fourth industrial revolution be the one that can empower humanity through new sustainable goals and equality
…and acknowledge that everything is connected
The digital mindset can elevate our way of thinking and in doing so we must acknowledge that everything is connected. One of the most important skills is to learn how to zoom in and zoom out.
The digital is not bound by a physical 3d reality, it could be quantum complex, we could navigate entire systems.

“Information is defined as data that are endowed with meaning and purpose.“
Knowledge refers to the awareness or understanding on the subject acquired from education or experience of a person.

Again something doesn’t fill quite right, something is still missing we think about the digital transformation.
The equation is not resolved. We have a lot of digital transformation project but still
