 The HITECH Act of 2009 requires your practice to, in
consultation with other appropriate Federal agencies (including
the National Institute of Standards and Technology), to update
your Federal Health IT Strategic Plan (developed as of June 3,
2008) to include speciﬁc objectives, milestones, and metrics
with respect to the following:

 The electronic exchange and use of health information and
the enterprise integration of such information.

 The utilization of an electronic health record for each person
in the United States by 2014.

 The incorporation of privacy and security protections for the
electronic exchange of an individual’s individually identiﬁable
health information (HIPAA).

 In short, this Act requires your practice to

electronic ﬁle for each of your patients by
2014.
 The sharing of information between
organizations such as laboratories,
pharmacies or other entities must adhere to
the HIPAA guidelines assuring the highest
level of patient IT security available.
