First of all we need to understand
What is Fire ?
Theory of Fire & Smoke
• Before attempting to understand fire detection systems and automatic
sprinklers, it is beneficial to possess a basic knowledge of fire
development and behavior.
• With this information, the role and interaction of these supplemental
fire safety systems in the protection process can then be better realized.
• Basically, a fire is a chemical reaction in which a carbon based material
(fuel), mixes with oxygen (usually as a component of air), and is heated
to a point where flammable vapors are produced.
• These vapors can then come in contact with something that is hot
enough to cause vapor ignition, and a resulting fire. In simple terms,
something that can burn touches something that is hot, and a fire is
produced
Theory of Fire & Smoke
• Libraries, archives, museums, and historic structures frequently
contain numerous fuels. These include books, manuscripts, records,
artifacts, combustible interior finishes, cabinets, furnishings, and
laboratory chemicals.
Theory of Fire & Smoke

Elements of Fire
Three elements essential simultaneously
for a fire:
• Fuel or combustible material
• Enough OXYGENto sustain combustion,
• Enough HEATto raise the material to its ignition temperature,
These three elements together give rise to
The chemical reaction that is FIRE.
9
The Fire Triangle
10
Stages of a Fire
Incipient stage: Initial stage of a fire. No visible flame
or smoke, but the chemical reaction of fire is in progress.
Smoldering stage: Second stage of a fire. Flame is
not visible but smoke and heat are produced.
Open Flame stage: Third stage of fire. Flame is
visible, transient stage from smoldering to open flame is
longer. In a few seconds open flame can lead to a major fire.
High Heat stage: Fourth stage of fire. Flames and
heat are so high that loss to the property are maximum.
11
• Human error (95.7%)
• Deficiencies in buildings
• Inadequate fire protection systems
• Proliferation of ignition sources
• Lack of R & D into fire accidents
• Public apathy
(Data from National seminar on fire safety in the new
millennium - N Delhi 24 -25 January, 2011)
Reasons for Fire Accidents
12
Summary
• Majority of fires occur in storage areas.
• Most of the fires take place either late at night or
early in the morning or on non working days
when the storage areas are unattended.
• Poor housekeeping practices and sparingly used
areas lead to major conflagrations.
• Not much importance is paid for providing
detection or extinguishing system.
• Employees are not adequately trained
• There is no serious attempt to learn from past
mistakes.
13
Fire Safety /
extinguishing fires
14
Fuel sources and ignition sources be kept
apart.
Take any of these three things away, and the
fire will be extinguished.
Fire extinguishers put out fire by taking away
one or more elements of the fire triangle.

Common Fire Extinguishing agents
19
Common Fire Extinguishing agents
CARBON DIOXIDE (CO2)
• Reduces oxygen to less than 15%
• Effective on Class B,C and E fires
• No residue
• Relatively inert
Disadvantages
• Generally >35% concentration by volume required for total flooding
system
• Toxic to humans at >4% by volume
• Not the best agent for smouldering deep-seated fires (concentration
required for >20 minutes)
20
Common Fire Extinguishing agents
MULTIPURPOSE DRY CHEMICAL
• Interrupts chemical reactions
• Mono ammonium phosphate
• Effective on Class A, B, and C fires
• Non-conducting medium
Disadvantages
• Obscures vision
• More irritating than ordinary dry chemical
• Nozzle pressure may cause burning liquids to splash
21
Common Fire Extinguishing agents
HALON
• Interrupts chemical reactions
• Bromotrifluoromethane
• Effective on Class A, B, and C fires
• Not acutely toxic at <10% by volume
• Generally used at <7% by volume
• No residue
• No chilling effect on electronic parts and components
Disadvantages
• Acutely toxic at >10% by volume (anaesthetic and cardiac
effects)
• Delayed effects and effects of chronic exposure not well
known
• Final bi-products after fire might be toxic on
decomposition
22
23
Fire Extinguishers
Portable extinguishers are only “first-aid”
implements, for immediate use on fires in
the incipient stage.
“First line of defense.”
The Indian Standards Institution has
classified FEs according to the nature of
the burning material .
24
Which FE to use?
When picking one up look for :-
• What is burning?
• Ease in handling.
• Method of operation.
• Effective range
25
Using FEs
Even though extinguishers come in a number of
shapes and sizes, they are all operated similarly.
When using an FE remember the word PASS :
P A S S -- Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep
26
Pull the pin at the top of the
extinguisher that keeps the
handle from being accidentally
pressed
Using FEs
27
Aim the nozzle at the base of
the fire.
Using FEs
28
Stand approximately 8 feet away
from the fire and squeeze the
handle to discharge the
extinguisher.
When you release the handle,
the jet will stop.
Using FEs
29
Sweep the nozzle to and
fro at the base of the fire.
After the fire appears to
go out, watch it carefully-
it may re-ignite!
Using FEs
30
Fire Extinguishers
Most fire extinguishers will have a picture label
telling you which type of fire it is designed for. Viz.
Remember
fire extinguishers put out fire by taking away one
or more elements of the fire triangle
32
Fire Hydrants System
• A Hydrant System is a backbone of Fire Protection System.
• A Hydrant System comprises of Hydrant Valve, Hose box, Hose Pipes, Hose Reel,
Hose Reel Drum, Branch Pipe & etc.
33
Hose pipes and Branch pipes
• Hoses that are used for delivering the water
(also called as delivery hoses) are generally
of RRL (Reinforced Rubber lined) type of 15
m or 30 m in length.
• Branch pipes – are tapering metallic pipes to
which nozzles of 20 mm size are attached.
34
Wet Riser System
• Line pressure is initially maintained by a
jockey pump.
• When any hydrant is operated and
jockey pump fails to maintain the
pressure then after certain drop in
pressure wet riser pump takes auto
start.
• It can be switched off manually.
35
Hose reel system
• Hose reels are non percolating delivery
hoses of small internal diameter,
normally 19 mm carried on a drum.
• Hose reels are first-aid fire
extinguishing equipment suitable for
general protection of building.
• It is attached with wet riser system.
36
Fire Pumps
• Line pressure is maintained by the fire
pumps.
• Number of pumps supply water in case
of fire emergency.
37
Jockey Pump
• Primarily line pressure is maintained by
the jockey pump.
• It has auto start and auto cut off
features.
38
Sprinkler Pump
• If the sprinklers are operated and jockey
pump fails to maintain the pressure then
sprinkler pump will auto start.
• After certain drop in pressure it can be
switched off manually.
39
Diesel Pump
• It is the standby to both the electric
pumps in case of power failure.
40
Sprinkler System
A fire sprinkler system is an active fire protection measure, consisting of a water supply
system, providing adequate pressure and flow rate to a water distribution piping system, onto
which fire sprinklers are connected. Although historically only used in factories and large
commercial buildings, home and small building systems
41
Sprinkler System
• An automatic sprinkler system consists of
pipes and heat operated valves (sprinkler
„heads‟) by means of which a fire is
automatically detected , the alarm given and
water delivered to seat of fire.
• By this means a fire is extinguished or kept
under control till fire brigade arrives.
• Line pressure is maintained by Jockey &
Sprinkler pump backed by diesel pump.

Co2 Flooding System
From a main distribution valves, a piping system is used to distribute the gas to the discharge
nozzles which are placed uniformly throughout the protected spaces.
It extinguishes fires using CO2 by suppressing the oxygen content in the space . Designed to
withstand every climatic conditions.
These devices are widely used in Electrical Transformers , Power Generators ,Machinery Spaces
& Others
43
FM200 Flooding System
•Fast - Within seconds, FM200 penetrates the entire hazard areas to smother the combustion.
•Environmentally Friendly & FM200 exists as a gas in the earth's atmosphere and is one of
the by-products of combustion. It's use has no environmental impact.
•Non-damaging – FM200 does not cause spoilage, requires no clean up and leaves no
residue.
•Non-conductive – FM200 is electrically non-conductive, allowing use for a wide variety of
special applications.
Adaptive – FM200 is effective on a wide range of flammable and combustible materials.
44
When fighting a fire
Check :
• whether your path of escape is blocked
• If the extinguisher has run out of material.
• The extinguisher is effective or not.
• If you are not able to fight the fire
“safely”,then

OTHER DEVICES
• A public address or "PA" system is an electronic amplification
system with a mixer, amplifier and loudspeakers, used to
reinforce a given sound (e.g.,a person making a speech,
prerecorded music, or message) and distributing the 'sound' to
the general public around a building.
• Simple PA systems are often used in small venues such as school
auditoriums, churches, and small bars. PA systems with a larger
number of speakers are widely used in institutional and
commercial buildings, to read announcements or declare states of
emergency. Intercom systems, which are often used in schools,
also have microphones in each room so that the occupants can
reply to the central office.
Fire Alarm & Security Systems
Public Address System
Introduction
• There is disagreement over when to call these audio systems
Sound Reinforcement (SR) systems or PA systems. Some audio
engineers distinguish between the two by technology and
capability, while others distinguish by intended use (e.g., SR
systems are for live music whereas PA systems are usually for
reproduction of speech and recorded music in buildings and
institutions). This distinction is important in some regions or
markets, while in other regions or markets the terms are
interchangeable.

  • 4. FIRE FIGHTING / PROTECTION SYSTEM & FIRE EXTINGUISHERS FIRE ALARM & DETECTION SYSTEM – CONVENTIONAL, ADDRESSABLE & WIRELESS FAS INTRUSION ALARM SYSTEM (BURGLAR ALARM SYSTEM) SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM - DVR BASED SOLUTION SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM – NVR & IP BASED ACCESS CONTROL – PROXIMITY, BIOMETRIC & FACE RECOGNISION FLAME & BEAM SENSORS
  • 5. First of all we need to understand What is Fire ? Theory of Fire & Smoke
  • 6. • Before attempting to understand fire detection systems and automatic sprinklers, it is beneficial to possess a basic knowledge of fire development and behavior. • With this information, the role and interaction of these supplemental fire safety systems in the protection process can then be better realized. • Basically, a fire is a chemical reaction in which a carbon based material (fuel), mixes with oxygen (usually as a component of air), and is heated to a point where flammable vapors are produced. • These vapors can then come in contact with something that is hot enough to cause vapor ignition, and a resulting fire. In simple terms, something that can burn touches something that is hot, and a fire is produced Theory of Fire & Smoke
  • 7. • Libraries, archives, museums, and historic structures frequently contain numerous fuels. These include books, manuscripts, records, artifacts, combustible interior finishes, cabinets, furnishings, and laboratory chemicals. Theory of Fire & Smoke
  • 8. 8 Elements of Fire Three elements essential simultaneously for a fire: • Fuel or combustible material • Enough OXYGENto sustain combustion, • Enough HEATto raise the material to its ignition temperature, These three elements together give rise to The chemical reaction that is FIRE.
  • 10. 10 Stages of a Fire Incipient stage: Initial stage of a fire. No visible flame or smoke, but the chemical reaction of fire is in progress. Smoldering stage: Second stage of a fire. Flame is not visible but smoke and heat are produced. Open Flame stage: Third stage of fire. Flame is visible, transient stage from smoldering to open flame is longer. In a few seconds open flame can lead to a major fire. High Heat stage: Fourth stage of fire. Flames and heat are so high that loss to the property are maximum.
  • 11. 11 • Human error (95.7%) • Deficiencies in buildings • Inadequate fire protection systems • Proliferation of ignition sources • Lack of R & D into fire accidents • Public apathy (Data from National seminar on fire safety in the new millennium - N Delhi 24 -25 January, 2011) Reasons for Fire Accidents
  • 12. 12 Summary • Majority of fires occur in storage areas. • Most of the fires take place either late at night or early in the morning or on non working days when the storage areas are unattended. • Poor housekeeping practices and sparingly used areas lead to major conflagrations. • Not much importance is paid for providing detection or extinguishing system. • Employees are not adequately trained • There is no serious attempt to learn from past mistakes.
  • 14. 14 Fuel sources and ignition sources be kept apart. Take any of these three things away, and the fire will be extinguished. Fire extinguishers put out fire by taking away one or more elements of the fire triangle. Fire Safety
  • 15. Fuel Extinguishing a Fire Fire is extinguished by the removal of any one of the 3 elements
  • 16. Extinguishing a Fire Fire is extinguished by the removal of any one of the 3 elements Starvation Fuel
  • 17. 17 Common Fire Extinguishing agents Water Sand Carbon dioxide Foam Multipurpose dry chemical Halon* *INDIA has already stop the consumption Of halon extinguishers in year 2010. Used in Extinguishers
  • 18. 18 Foam Has blanketing or smothering effect Has cooling effect Can be used for controlling Class “B” fires. Disadvantages Leaves considerable residue Common Fire Extinguishing agents
  • 19. 19 Common Fire Extinguishing agents CARBON DIOXIDE (CO2) • Reduces oxygen to less than 15% • Effective on Class B,C and E fires • No residue • Relatively inert Disadvantages • Generally >35% concentration by volume required for total flooding system • Toxic to humans at >4% by volume • Not the best agent for smouldering deep-seated fires (concentration required for >20 minutes)
  • 20. 20 Common Fire Extinguishing agents MULTIPURPOSE DRY CHEMICAL • Interrupts chemical reactions • Mono ammonium phosphate • Effective on Class A, B, and C fires • Non-conducting medium Disadvantages • Obscures vision • More irritating than ordinary dry chemical • Nozzle pressure may cause burning liquids to splash
  • 21. 21 Common Fire Extinguishing agents HALON • Interrupts chemical reactions • Bromotrifluoromethane • Effective on Class A, B, and C fires • Not acutely toxic at <10% by volume • Generally used at <7% by volume • No residue • No chilling effect on electronic parts and components Disadvantages • Acutely toxic at >10% by volume (anaesthetic and cardiac effects) • Delayed effects and effects of chronic exposure not well known • Final bi-products after fire might be toxic on decomposition
  • 22. 22
  • 23. 23 Fire Extinguishers Portable extinguishers are only “first-aid” implements, for immediate use on fires in the incipient stage. “First line of defense.” The Indian Standards Institution has classified FEs according to the nature of the burning material .
  • 24. 24 Which FE to use? When picking one up look for :- • What is burning? • Ease in handling. • Method of operation. • Effective range
  • 25. 25 Using FEs Even though extinguishers come in a number of shapes and sizes, they are all operated similarly. When using an FE remember the word PASS : P A S S -- Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep
  • 26. 26 Pull the pin at the top of the extinguisher that keeps the handle from being accidentally pressed Using FEs
  • 27. 27 Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire. Using FEs
  • 28. 28 Stand approximately 8 feet away from the fire and squeeze the handle to discharge the extinguisher. When you release the handle, the jet will stop. Using FEs
  • 29. 29 Sweep the nozzle to and fro at the base of the fire. After the fire appears to go out, watch it carefully- it may re-ignite! Using FEs
  • 30. 30 Fire Extinguishers Most fire extinguishers will have a picture label telling you which type of fire it is designed for. Viz. Remember fire extinguishers put out fire by taking away one or more elements of the fire triangle
  • 31.
  • 32. 32 Fire Hydrants System • A Hydrant System is a backbone of Fire Protection System. • A Hydrant System comprises of Hydrant Valve, Hose box, Hose Pipes, Hose Reel, Hose Reel Drum, Branch Pipe & etc.
  • 33. 33 Hose pipes and Branch pipes • Hoses that are used for delivering the water (also called as delivery hoses) are generally of RRL (Reinforced Rubber lined) type of 15 m or 30 m in length. • Branch pipes – are tapering metallic pipes to which nozzles of 20 mm size are attached.
  • 34. 34 Wet Riser System • Line pressure is initially maintained by a jockey pump. • When any hydrant is operated and jockey pump fails to maintain the pressure then after certain drop in pressure wet riser pump takes auto start. • It can be switched off manually.
  • 35. 35 Hose reel system • Hose reels are non percolating delivery hoses of small internal diameter, normally 19 mm carried on a drum. • Hose reels are first-aid fire extinguishing equipment suitable for general protection of building. • It is attached with wet riser system.
  • 36. 36 Fire Pumps • Line pressure is maintained by the fire pumps. • Number of pumps supply water in case of fire emergency.
  • 37. 37 Jockey Pump • Primarily line pressure is maintained by the jockey pump. • It has auto start and auto cut off features.
  • 38. 38 Sprinkler Pump • If the sprinklers are operated and jockey pump fails to maintain the pressure then sprinkler pump will auto start. • After certain drop in pressure it can be switched off manually.
  • 39. 39 Diesel Pump • It is the standby to both the electric pumps in case of power failure.
  • 40. 40 Sprinkler System A fire sprinkler system is an active fire protection measure, consisting of a water supply system, providing adequate pressure and flow rate to a water distribution piping system, onto which fire sprinklers are connected. Although historically only used in factories and large commercial buildings, home and small building systems
  • 41. 41 Sprinkler System • An automatic sprinkler system consists of pipes and heat operated valves (sprinkler „heads‟) by means of which a fire is automatically detected , the alarm given and water delivered to seat of fire. • By this means a fire is extinguished or kept under control till fire brigade arrives. • Line pressure is maintained by Jockey & Sprinkler pump backed by diesel pump. Color of bulb Activation Temp. Red 680 C Yellow 790 C
  • 42. 42 Co2 Flooding System From a main distribution valves, a piping system is used to distribute the gas to the discharge nozzles which are placed uniformly throughout the protected spaces. It extinguishes fires using CO2 by suppressing the oxygen content in the space . Designed to withstand every climatic conditions. These devices are widely used in Electrical Transformers , Power Generators ,Machinery Spaces & Others
  • 43. 43 FM200 Flooding System •Fast - Within seconds, FM200 penetrates the entire hazard areas to smother the combustion. •Environmentally Friendly & FM200 exists as a gas in the earth's atmosphere and is one of the by-products of combustion. It's use has no environmental impact. •Non-damaging – FM200 does not cause spoilage, requires no clean up and leaves no residue. •Non-conductive – FM200 is electrically non-conductive, allowing use for a wide variety of special applications. Adaptive – FM200 is effective on a wide range of flammable and combustible materials.
  • 44. 44 When fighting a fire Check : • whether your path of escape is blocked • If the extinguisher has run out of material. • The extinguisher is effective or not. • If you are not able to fight the fire “safely”,then

  • 71. • A public address or "PA" system is an electronic amplification system with a mixer, amplifier and loudspeakers, used to reinforce a given sound (e.g.,a person making a speech, prerecorded music, or message) and distributing the 'sound' to the general public around a building. • Simple PA systems are often used in small venues such as school auditoriums, churches, and small bars. PA systems with a larger number of speakers are widely used in institutional and commercial buildings, to read announcements or declare states of emergency. Intercom systems, which are often used in schools, also have microphones in each room so that the occupants can reply to the central office. Fire Alarm & Security Systems Public Address System Introduction
  • 72. • There is disagreement over when to call these audio systems Sound Reinforcement (SR) systems or PA systems. Some audio engineers distinguish between the two by technology and capability, while others distinguish by intended use (e.g., SR systems are for live music whereas PA systems are usually for reproduction of speech and recorded music in buildings and institutions). This distinction is important in some regions or markets, while in other regions or markets the terms are interchangeable. Fire Alarm & Security Systems Public Address System Introduction
