CIP Genebank and GLIS DOI's - July 2020
1. The Good, the Bad, and the
Ugly of GLIS-DOIs:
implementations at CIP
Noelle Anglin and Edwin Rojas
2. CIP Genebank
• One of world’s largest in vitro genebank
• In vitro started in the early ‘80s
• ~12,000 accessions maintained in vitro
• Mostly Annex 1 crops
• All collections held in trust for ITPGRFA
• Distribute collections freely, globally with SMTA for
research, training and breeding

15. The Good
• Complete adoption in the
CIP genebank
• Permanent ID for each
accession
• GLIS allow linkage of DOIs
between genebanks
• GLIS periodically queries
internet to link DOIs
automatically to
published datasets or
publications
• GLIS link DOIs
automatically with other
databases like Genesys,
FAO WIEWS, Svalbard and
GRIN-Global
16. The Bad and Ugly
• Minting GLIS DOIs at the accession level is quick - support from FAO (Marco
Marsella) but linking GLIS DOIs between genebanks - manual data curation
• CIP and CePaCT linked only 106 sweetpotato accessions
• Acquisition data and basic passport is required which can be tough for old
accessions without much data
• Linking GLIS DOIs to publications or datasets is not automatic (GLIS periodically
queries internet)
• GLIS DOIs not in references then it’s a slower/manual process
• Mostly breeding accessions (~5K) conserved in the genebank do not have GLIS
DOIs – slower adoption from breeders
• Require compliance and understanding by users (distribution recipient or
provider) - i.e. - national genebank just sent the accessions list but without GLIS
DOIs.
• Standardization on how users employ GLIS DOIs?
International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture
By 2018, 1 year – we had the entire collection minted with DOIs

• It provides a simple way for recipients of material under an SMTA to comply with their obligations under the provisions of Article 6.9 of the SMTA, simply by using the DOI in their publications and online datasets to refer to the material received. For example, it enables a genebank manager to easily find all publications and online datasets created by recipients of accessions from the genebank.
6.9 The Recipient shall make available to the Multilateral System, through the information system provided for in Article 17 of the Treaty, all non-confidential information that results from research and development carried out on the Material, and is encouraged to share through the Multilateral System non-monetary benefits expressly identified in Article 13.2 of the Treaty that result from such research and development. After the expiry or abandonment of the protection period of an intellectual property right on a Product that incorporates the Material, the Recipient is encouraged to place a sample of this Product into a collection that is part of the Multilateral System, for research and breeding.
