Liberty And Justice For All
By Barry Kennedy
As citizens of the United States we are very familiar with these words. They
are the closing words to the “Pledge of Allegiance.” This Thursday we celebrate the
Fourth of July, our day of independence. This day marks the cry for freedom from
tyranny and a call to liberty in this “new world.” Where would we be as a nation
today without this epic moment in history? However, there are still many today
who take for granted this liberty and mock the very idea of justice. The only thing
that motivates them is a desire to gain power and to fulfill their own lusts. Justice
for all has turned into justice for those who think alike. This is why the forefathers
drafted the constitution, so that all could have a standard. With that standard we
have enjoyed the greatest prosperity and freedom history has ever known. This is
also true for the spiritual world.
Mankind has found himself bound in sin since the fall in the garden
(Genesis 3; Romans 5:12). Many fail to see that a life lived in sin is a life lived in
bondage. Paul explained this truth to the Roman congregation. “Know ye not, that
to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey;
whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?” (Romans 6:16).
Slavery and bondage have led many people to extraordinary feats of bravery and
perseverance. Can anyone imagine wanting to be enslaved? We as Americans
especially pride ourselves on our freedoms, yet when we take an honest look at
many of the lifestyles promoted in the nation, we cannot help but to see that many
are living a life of slavery. Many are slaves to their jobs, fashion, entertainment,
drugs (including alcohol), power, and many things as well. Christians are to be a
balanced people. In fact, the word God used is “temperance” meaning self-
controlled (2 Peter 1:5-10). Paul pointed this out to the church at Corinth by
comparing Christianity to athletics.
Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the
prize? So run, that ye may obtain. And every man that striveth for the
mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible
crown; but we an incorruptible. I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so
fight I, not as one that beateth the air: But I keep under my body, and bring
it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I
myself should be a castaway (1 Corinthians 9:24-27).
We should be striving continually for the freedom from sin and the great burden
that it places upon the souls of mankind. “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift

of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord”
(Romans 6:23).
Liberty and justice is a universal blessing. In
fact, many Americans would love to see all nations
of this great world take on the banner of liberty and
justice. However, some want to enjoy their own
liberty and never consider anyone else. Maybe they
are racist or just self-centered. Neither one of these
characteristics are acceptable in true Christianity.
Peter was given direct instruction from God as to
the acceptance of Gentiles into God’s Kingdom, the
Church (Acts 10). Even after Peter converted the
Italian centurion Cornelius, the Jews did not want to
welcome this “outsider” into their fellowship (Acts
11:1, 2). Therefore, Cornelius received liberty and
justice from God, but not the Jews (at the first
anyway). Peter summed it up with these words, “Of
a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of
persons: But in every nation he that feareth him,
and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him”
(Acts 10:34, 35).
Are we truly desiring liberty and justice for
all? As Americans we pledge liberty and justice for
all in our “Pledge of Allegiance,” but what about
spiritually speaking? Do we really want those who
are living in the bonds of sin to be free? The
answer to this question is found in our willingness,
or unwillingness, to fulfill God’s great commission.
“Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to
every creature. He that believeth and is baptized
shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be
damned” (Mark 16:15, 16).
