WAKE UP, SOMEONE NEEDS HELP
Barry Kennedy
Ever have one of those days where you feel as if you are in a fog? It is almost
as if you never really awakened from the last night’s sleep. Feeling this way can cause
one to be somewhat oblivious to his surroundings. Sometimes we need someone to
say, “WAKE UP!” What exactly do we mean when we say wake up? Wake up is often
used to try and get someone to awake from sleep, but this phrase is also used to tell
someone to pay attention. For example, one’s child is walking around not paying
attention to his surroundings and did not notice that a car is coming toward him. The
parent frantically screams, “Watch out!” After they calm down, the conversation turns
to a reprimand, in which the parent says, “You need to wake up!” The meaning of this
statement is that the child needs to pay attention to what is going on around him.
Could it be the case that we are oblivious to some very important surroundings? Is it
possible that we fail to see that there are people all around us who are in need of help?
Could it be that someone needs to tell us, “WAKE UP, SOMEONE NEEDS HELP?”
Though many people need help, it can be somewhat difficult to find them.
That may sound strange but think of how people do not want to seem needy. Pride
could be the root cause of this problem. One must consider however, the fact that
“Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18).
Pride can cause a person to say, “I cannot ask for help, they might think. . ..” The end
result is destruction for the one too proud to admit weakness. Just think about how
many falls could have been avoided if people were willing to ask for help?
The fact that some people will not ask for help has too often become an excuse
for others to not try to help. Let’s face it, helping others is not an easy thing to do, but
then again, no one ever said that it would be easy. Things that are difficult require
effort and commitment. The rewards are often overshadowed by the work. Take, for
example exercise. Physical exercise is not most American’s (including this author’s)
idea of easy. No one denies the value that there is in bodily exercise, but the fact still
remains that if it were easy then almost everyone would be exercising. Helping others
can be viewed in a very similar way. No one denies the blessings or benefits there are
in helping others, but the fact still remains that it is hard. Sometimes we start thinking,
“If I help them, will they expect more?” or “If I help them, then they may think that I
am acting as if I am better than they are.” Satan loves it when we talk ourselves out of
doing what we know is right (Genesis 3). On that note God’s word says, “As we
therefore have opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are
of the household of faith” (Galatians 6:10).
The greatest command states that we are to “Love the Lord thy God with all
thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind” (Matthew 22:37). Jesus went on
to explain that the “second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself”

“Thou shalt observe to do all that they inform thee”
(Deut. 17:10)
--article continued from page 1—
(Matthew 22:39). If we are to keep the greatest
commands, we must start looking out for one
another, as we would look out for ourselves.
“Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye
which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit
of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be
tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so
fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:1, 2). If this is
not a command to help one another, then there are
no commands in the Bible. Paul wrote that helping
others involves considering ourselves in the
process. One might ask, “How is that possible?”
Are we to assume that helping others is to be a
selfish act? Of course not! The point Paul was
making is that we too may find ourselves one day in
need of another person’s help. We all make
mistakes, or sin, and need the help of Christ to be
forgiven, but there are many sins that require
forgiveness from one another as well (Matthew
18:15-17).
Look at our surroundings for those whom
we may be able to help. This would mean looking
for opportunities to do physical chores for those
who are unable; taking time to talk with, or listen to,
those who are hurting on the inside, even though
they may be smiling on the outside; and most
importantly, looking for an opportunity to bring a
lost soul to Christ. The bottom line is that as
Christians we need to: “WAKE UP, SOMEONE
NEEDS HELP.”

East main informer, 6 23-20

  • 1. 4 Vol. 45 June 23, 2020 Number 25 WAKE UP, SOMEONE NEEDS HELP Barry Kennedy Ever have one of those days where you feel as if you are in a fog? It is almost as if you never really awakened from the last night’s sleep. Feeling this way can cause one to be somewhat oblivious to his surroundings. Sometimes we need someone to say, “WAKE UP!” What exactly do we mean when we say wake up? Wake up is often used to try and get someone to awake from sleep, but this phrase is also used to tell someone to pay attention. For example, one’s child is walking around not paying attention to his surroundings and did not notice that a car is coming toward him. The parent frantically screams, “Watch out!” After they calm down, the conversation turns to a reprimand, in which the parent says, “You need to wake up!” The meaning of this statement is that the child needs to pay attention to what is going on around him. Could it be the case that we are oblivious to some very important surroundings? Is it possible that we fail to see that there are people all around us who are in need of help? Could it be that someone needs to tell us, “WAKE UP, SOMEONE NEEDS HELP?” Though many people need help, it can be somewhat difficult to find them. That may sound strange but think of how people do not want to seem needy. Pride could be the root cause of this problem. One must consider however, the fact that “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18). Pride can cause a person to say, “I cannot ask for help, they might think. . ..” The end result is destruction for the one too proud to admit weakness. Just think about how many falls could have been avoided if people were willing to ask for help? The fact that some people will not ask for help has too often become an excuse for others to not try to help. Let’s face it, helping others is not an easy thing to do, but then again, no one ever said that it would be easy. Things that are difficult require effort and commitment. The rewards are often overshadowed by the work. Take, for example exercise. Physical exercise is not most American’s (including this author’s) idea of easy. No one denies the value that there is in bodily exercise, but the fact still remains that if it were easy then almost everyone would be exercising. Helping others can be viewed in a very similar way. No one denies the blessings or benefits there are in helping others, but the fact still remains that it is hard. Sometimes we start thinking, “If I help them, will they expect more?” or “If I help them, then they may think that I am acting as if I am better than they are.” Satan loves it when we talk ourselves out of doing what we know is right (Genesis 3). On that note God’s word says, “As we therefore have opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith” (Galatians 6:10). The greatest command states that we are to “Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind” (Matthew 22:37). Jesus went on to explain that the “second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself” --article continued page 2-- ELDERS Mike Childers..............397-6453 Dennis Hallmark .........255-5557 Mark Hitt.....................322-0917 Bobby Lindley.............260-9193 DEACONS Wade Bryan.................419-5552 William Harris.............416-8149 Ricky Lindsey .............255-8136 Jeff Mansel..................871-0357 Jimmy Spearman.........840-8957 Michael Wilson ...........891-0891 MINISTERS Barry Kennedy ... • 2. --article continued from page 1— (Matthew 22:39). If we are to keep the greatest commands, we must start looking out for one another, as we would look out for ourselves. “Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:1, 2). If this is not a command to help one another, then there are no commands in the Bible. Paul wrote that helping others involves considering ourselves in the process. One might ask, “How is that possible?” Are we to assume that helping others is to be a selfish act? Of course not! The point Paul was making is that we too may find ourselves one day in need of another person’s help. We all make mistakes, or sin, and need the help of Christ to be forgiven, but there are many sins that require forgiveness from one another as well (Matthew 18:15-17). Look at our surroundings for those whom we may be able to help. This would mean looking for opportunities to do physical chores for those who are unable; taking time to talk with, or listen to, those who are hurting on the inside, even though they may be smiling on the outside; and most importantly, looking for an opportunity to bring a lost soul to Christ. The bottom line is that as Christians we need to: “WAKE UP, SOMEONE NEEDS HELP.” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Baptism We are happy to announce the baptism of Jake Donald on Wednesday, June 17. Jake is the son of Tony & Dundee Donald. We are so proud of Jake in his decision to put Christ on in baptism and wish him a long fruitful life in His service.
