Where Do I Stand?

In “The Mask Behind the Mask,” biographer Peter Evans says that actor Peter
Sellers played so many roles he sometimes was not sure of his own identity.
Approached once by a fan who asked him, "Are you Peter Sellers?" Sellers answered
briskly, "Not today," and walked on (Today in the Word, July 24, 1993). Not unlike
Mr. Sellers, we too may often find ourselves wondering who we are and where we
stand. Everyone wants to be needed, to feel useful, and especially to understand where
we stand. We all know how difficult it is to have that feeling of not knowing where we
stand with someone. Do they like us, are they truly our friends, or can we trust them?
Knowing how difficult it is, not knowing where we stand with one another, it is even
more detrimental not knowing where we stand with God.
1 John 2 gives a great commentary on how we can know where we stand with
God, as well as with our fellow man. “And hereby we do know that we know him, if we
keep his commandments” (1 John 2:3). John, and the Holy Spirit, wrote to encourage
Christians not to sin. Notice the tender expression John uses to address the audience of
this encouraging epistle;
“My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man
sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: And he is the
propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole
world” (1 John 2:1, 2). Some have said that John was directing this epistle to those
whom he converted, but the message is truly universal. That is fitting, considering John
is the author of love.
John had more to say to the church than simply “SIN NOT.” He went on to
explain that if (or more accurately when) we sin we have an advocate with the Father,
Jesus the Christ. He then states that our advocate is “righteous.” Imagine that, a
righteous defense attorney, one in who we can confidently trust. He is not out to get
our money, make a name for Himself, nor use underhanded tactics to win His case. We
all stand in need of a good defense according to Romans 3:23. The question is, “Where
do we stand with the only advocate that can help us?
John continued his letter stating that they/we can know where we stand. All we
have to do is keep His commandments (1 John 2:3). It is true that some claim to know
Jesus, but they do not do what His word has said. John, by inspiration, said for one to
do this makes him a liar (1 John 2:4). Knowing where we stand with God is all about
love. That may seem to be contradictory to what we have already said, how that we
know Him if we keep His commandments. You see keeping God’s commandments is
impossible without love. “If ye love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15). Did

you notice who wrote this verse? Yes, the apostle
John. Therefore, you and I must walk in the light of
God’s word, keeping His commandments. The result
is that we confidently know where we stand with God
(1 John 1:7; 2:6).
John also delivered God’s plan for knowing
where we ought to stand with our fellow man. “He
that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is
in darkness even until now. He that loveth his brother
abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of
stumbling in him. But he that hateth his brother is in
darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not
whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded
his eyes” (1 John 2:9-11).
How can we be Christ—like and hate anyone?
Christ tasted “death for every man” (Hebrews 2:9).
Jesus shows the love of God to you and me by taking
our death upon Himself, even while we were yet
sinners (Romans 5:8). “Who his own self bare our
sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead
to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose
stripes ye were healed” (1 Peter 2:24). Even the
“Golden Rule” of the Bible addresses the way we
might know where we stand with our fellow man.
“Therefore, all things whatsoever ye would that men
should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the
law and the prophets” (Matthew 7:12).
We all want to know where we stand. If that is
true, God is saying that He has given everything that
we need for us to make sure we know where we stand.
“According as his divine power hath given unto us all
things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the
knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and
virtue:” (2 Peter1:3). Are we accessing that
knowledge through His word (2 Timothy 3:16, 17)? If
not, we cannot be complete, nor can we know

Memphis this Friday to begin the Memphis School of
Preaching on Monday, June 23. We wish him the best
in his studies, as well.
