Learning “ONE” Lesson on Gratitude
Barry Kennedy
There are many great Bible lessons that involve “one.” The flood account in
Genesis 6-8, emphasizes the number one repeatedly. One man (Noah) found favor
in God’s eyes (Genesis 6:8). He built one ark (Genesis 6:14-16). One wood, door,
and window.” No one could help but to see the emphasis on one with Noah. What
about Jesus? He is the one Sacrifice, Savior, Son. Paul wrote to the brethren at
Ephesus mentioning the significance of one. “There is one body, and one Spirit,
even as also ye were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one
baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all, and through all, and in all”
(Ephesians 4:4-6). We should never forget the great works that God has done for
mankind. Considering all those many blessings should promote an attitude of
gratitude; however, many still fail to understand the need for gratitude.
Jesus taught the need for gratitude with ten lepers, whom He healed (Luke
17:11-19). Jesus and His disciples were passing through the borders of Samaria and
Galilee, when ten men infected with the dreaded disease of leprosy cried, “Jesus,
Master, have mercy on us” (Luke 17:13). They knew that they were not allowed to
approach anyone who was not leprous, so they stood afar off (Leviticus 13:45, 46).
No one could be cured from this dreaded disease, in those days, without divine
intervention. These men were desperate and pleaded with the Lord to show them
“mercy.” Sadly, there are people who only see their dependence upon the Lord
when they are faced with a situation that is out of their control?
Jesus, without hesitation said, “Go and show yourselves unto the priests”
(Luke 17:14). This was a commandment under the Law of Moses (Leviticus 13:2-
46; 14:2-32). The priests would declare them clean or unclean. Jesus knew that
these men were unclean, and His compassion was going to make them whole. As
they went on their way all ten were cleansed of their leprosy and that is where the
lesson on gratitude is made known. Only one turned back and shouted, “glorifying
God; and he fell on his face at His (Jesus’) feet, giving Him thanks:” (Luke 17:15,
16). Jesus pointed out the obvious, “Were not ten cleansed? but where are the
nine?” (Luke 17:17). Only the “stranger” (i.e. Samaritan) was truly grateful. No
doubt, the Pharisees would be taken back with the fact that a Samaritan (considered
lower than a dog to the Jews) was the one who made the proper response. Can we
imagine not being eager to say thank you if we were healed from an incurable
disease?

2. --article continued from page 1--
In this account Jesus makes a statement that is
often overlooked. “Arise and go thy way: thy faith
hath made thee whole” (Luke 17:19). Is it not
interesting how that Jesus mentioned the faith of the
leper only after his display of gratitude? Faith is,
without a doubt, a necessity.
By faith Enoch was translated that he should
not see death; and he was not found, because
God translated him: for he hath had witness
borne to him that before his translation he had
been well-pleasing unto God: and without
faith it is impossible to be well-pleasing unto
him; (Hebrews 11:6 ASV).
Enoch pleased the Lord by his faith and so the Lord
translated him. The opposite of Enoch’s faith is
displeasure to God. Sin is a divider, separating us
from God’s providential care and fellowship (Isaiah
59:1, 2; Proverbs 15:29). According to what Jesus said
to the thankful leper, connecting faith and gratitude,
we cannot be pleasing unto the Lord without being
grateful.
The next time we start thinking that we do not
owe anyone anything; we would do well to remember
some of those lessons learned by one. One Bible,
inspired by one Spirit, teaching one gospel about the
one salvation (cure for sin) is offered to the whole
world because of the love of God. We are all awaiting
a sentence of death, but Jesus offers the gift of life
(Romans 6:23). Are we truly thankful for that gift?
The gratitude of that one leper was an expression of
his faith. How faithful we are is shown by the
gratitude we display. We all should remember that
ingratitude leads to apostasy (Romans 1:21).
