“Thou shalt observe to do all that they inform thee”
(Deut. 17:10)
2. --article continued from page 1--
What do we really mean by forgive? Is it “I forgive
you,” “I want to forgive you,” or “You are forgiven?”
“I forgive you.” Wonderful, but can one forgive if
the person who did wrong will not repent? Short answer
is “no.” Forgiveness is defined:
“The freeing of a person from guilt and its
consequences, including punishment; usually as an
act of favour (sic), compassion or love, with the aim
of restoring a broken personal relationship.
Forgiveness can involve both the remission of
punishment and the cancellation of debts.1
One must realize that all transgressions (i.e. sins) are
against God (see Psalm 51:4; 1John 3:4). Therefore,
God is the only one who can remove the guilt and
punishment brought on by sin (Romans 6:23). So, “I
forgive you” may be a wonderful sound, but if the one
who did wrong did not repent, God will still hold him or
her accountable for the transgression.
“I want to forgive you.” This should be the
desire of every Christian. In fact, this is the
characteristic that the Lord showed on the cross when
He prayed, “Father forgive them, for they know not what
they do” (Luke 22:34). This disposition does not come
naturally to most people. That is why Jesus established
the “golden rule” for life i.e. treat people the way you
want to be treated (Matthew 7:12). However, the fact
remains, “…except ye repent ye shall all likewise
perish” (Luke 13:3).
“You are forgiven.” These are the words that
really make a difference. Yes, Jesus prayed that His
crucifiers would be forgiven for their ignorance, but the
Father would not say “you are forgiven” until they
repented and obeyed God’s commands. The proof is
seen in the sermon Peter preached at Pentecost, just fifty
days after the Lord was crucified. You see, if God had
forgiven those for whom Jesus prayed Peter should not
have said, “ye have taken, and by wicked hands have
crucified and slain:” (Acts 2:23). The realization that
they killed the Christ cut them to the heart and they
asked, “What shall we do?” (Acts 2:37). Peter
answered, ”Repent, and be baptized every one of you in
the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye
shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost” (Acts 2:38).
Those who gladly received (i.e. obeyed) his word (Acts
2:41) could then stand justified, literally just if they had
never sinned.
Dear friend are you needing to hear, or say, “I
forgive you;” “I want to forgive you;” or “You are

forgiven?” God is willing and ready to forgive us no
matter what anyone else does, as long as we are willing
to repent and come to Him (Matthew 11:28-30; Acts
17:30, 31). Neither God nor we are willing that any
should perish, but that all would come to repentance and
find His forgiveness. Are you truly forgiven?
