2. 2
King David has died,
and Solomon is on the
throne of Israel.
Taking care of
business!
3. 3
1 Kings 2:13 And Adonijah the
son of Haggith came to
Bathsheba the mother of
Solomon. And she said,
Comest thou peaceably? And
he said, Peaceably. 14 He said
moreover, I have somewhat
to say unto thee. And she
said, Say on.
That old serpent
the devil always
persists in trying;
And lying!
4. 4
15 And he said, Thou knowest
that the kingdom was mine,
and that all Israel set their
faces on me, that I should
reign: howbeit the kingdom
is turned about, and is
become my brother's: for it
was his from the LORD.
He is saying what she wants to hear,
not what he really believes.
5. 5
Let’s count the lies:
The kingdom was mine.
All Israel set their faces on me.
He said that God gave Solomon the kingdom, but
in his heart he felt it was his; he deserved it.
Lies are one of the chief weapons
in the devil’s arsenal.
6. 6
16 And now I ask one petition of thee, deny me not.
And she said unto him, Say on. 17 And he said,
Speak, I pray thee, unto Solomon the king, (for he
will not say thee nay,) that he give me Abishag the
Shunammite to wife. 18 And Bathsheba said, Well; I
will speak for thee unto the king.
Abishag had been King David’s wife, married to
him to keep him warm in his deathbed.
She could not be given to anyone but the king.
Bathsheba was fooled by
romanticism.
7. 7
19 Bathsheba therefore went unto King Solomon, to
speak unto him for Adonijah. And the king rose up
to meet her, and bowed himself unto her, and sat
down on his throne, and caused a seat to be set for
the king's mother; and she sat on his right hand.
20 Then she said, I desire one small petition of thee;
I pray thee, say me not nay. And the king said unto
her, Ask on, my mother: for I will not say thee nay.
Solomon honored his Mama, even
though he was King of Israel.
8. 8
21 And she said, Let Abishag the Shunammite
be given to Adonijah thy brother to wife.
Bathsheba
thought it was
romantic.
It was nothing more than
an evil plot to take the
throne.
9. 9
22 And King Solomon answered and said unto his
mother, And why dost thou ask Abishag the
Shunammite for Adonijah? ask for him the
kingdom also; for he is mine elder brother; even for
him, and for Abiathar the priest, and for Joab the
son of Zeruiah.
What they had failed to gain openly, they are still
conspiring to gain through subterfuge.
Bathsheba was fooled, but Solomon was not.
Don’t be fooled by the lies and deceits of
the devil and his followers.
10. 10
23 Then king Solomon sware by the LORD, saying,
God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah have
not spoken this word against his own life. 24 Now
therefore, as the LORD liveth, which hath estab-
lished me, and set me on the throne of David my
father, and who hath made me an house, as He
promised, Adonijah shall be put to death this day.
25 And King Solomon sent by the hand of Benaiah
the son of Jehoiada; and he fell upon him that he
died.
12. 12
26 And unto Abiathar the priest said the king, Get
thee to Anathoth, unto thine own fields; for thou art
worthy of death: but I will not at this time put thee
to death, because thou barest the ark of the Lord
GOD before David my father, and because thou
hast been afflicted in all wherein my father was
afflicted. 27 So Solomon thrust out Abiathar from
being priest unto the LORD; that he might fulfil the
Word of the LORD, which He spake concerning
the house of Eli in Shiloh.
13. 13
This was an act of mercy.
Abiathar deserved death for his part in the plot.
But, in his younger days he had done
a good job as priest.
And he had stood with David through
many hardships.
Solomon let him live for the good he had been.
14. 14
27 So Solomon thrust out Abiathar from being priest
unto the LORD; that he might fulfil the Word of
the LORD, which He spake concerning the house
of Eli in Shiloh.
Eli the priest had allowed his sons to become
wicked in the house of God.
They were getting fat off of the sacrifices
people brought unto the Lord,
They were seducing and fornicating with
women who had come to the tabernacle.
15. 15
1 Samuel 2 30 "Therefore the LORD, the God of
Israel, declares: 'I promised that your house and
your father's house would minister before Me
forever.' But now the LORD declares: 'Far be it
from Me! Those who honor Me I will honor, but
those who despise Me will be disdained. 31 The
time is coming when I will cut short your strength
and the strength of your father's house, so that there
will not be an old man in your family line. (NIV)
16. 16
I mentioned recently that God’s Promises have
prerequisites that we must keep.
God’s Promises are only for those who honor
Him with their lives.
Those who despise God will be despised.
17. 17
1 Peter 5 8-9 Be sober, be vigilant; because your
adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh
about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist
steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same
afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that
are in the world.
Satan may come as a roaring lion, as a snake in the
grass, or he may have blue eyes and blue jeans.
Resist him always!
18. 18
He will always come saying what you want to hear.
As Adonijah did with Bathsheba, if you love
romance, he will come with romanticism.
If you love money, he will come with opportunity.
As Solomon was, we must be
Always on guard against the
wiles of devils.
As Solomon was, we must be
Always on guard against the
wiles of devils.
