Video #1 As you watch this junior high/middle school teacher, think about how he is attempting to build background knowledge and to make his thinking about text visible to the students. How does he THINK ALOUD? http://www.teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=116101
Now, let’s jack it up …
What do you think of when I say baseball?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fo9fEADUqPs&feature=related Harry Caray, who is credited with singing it first at a ball game in 1971, once said, "I would always sing it, because I think it's the only song I knew the words to!" On Opening Day in 1976 Bill Veeck noticed the fans were singing along with Caray so a secret microphone was placed in the broadcast booth the following day to allow ALL the fans to hear him. Veeckexplained to Caray, "Harry, anybody in the ballpark hearing you sing 'Take Me Out to the Ball Game' knows that he can sing as well as you can. Probably better than you can. So he or she sings along. Hell, if you had a good singing voice you'd intimidate them, and nobody would join in!"
Think about how you can… Set your students up for success with the text. Build their background knowledge of text. Engage them in the text. Think aloud about text. Remember that YOU ARE THE EXPERT. How can you make your thinking about text visible for kids? Reinforce that they should be thinking while they read.
Video #2 Rich Thompson http://www.learner.org/vod/vod_window.html?pid=1983 How does Mr. Thompson support conversation about text and comprehension? http://www.learner.org/resources/series182.html?pop=yes&pid=1981#
Video #3 Sheila Owens Kindergarten THINK ABOUT … How does Ms. Owens support comprehension? http://www.learner.org/vod/vod_window.html?pid=1724 . Becoming Readers and WritersIn Sheila Owen's Beaumont, California kindergarten class, all five- and six-year-olds are "readers and writers from day one." We see her students listen and respond to a story about pumpkins, create sentences using the word wall, and chant a poem on the letter D. Guided by Ms. Owen, they write a group account of the pumpkin life cycle, and then work independently on their writing. Go to this unit. http://www.learner.org/resources/series162.html#
