Researchers’ questions OA debate is still focused on publications of public funded research: this maintains a dual system of pay wall and OA research OA debate is still dominant in Europe but US and Asia are not keeping pace. International research relies on similar standards across countries Pay-to-publish does not address issues of inequality: the previous system presented inequality for users; this proposes an unequal access for researchers
- 4. Lisbon Declaration 2021 Invite humanities scholars to mobilize their institutions and relevant stakeholders to guarantee that every single youngster throughout Europe has open access to humanities research, education and innovation by 2025, contributing effectively to increase humanities literacy throughout all European regions. Encourage humanities scholars to engage actively in research, education and innovation activities under “open science principles” and in close collaboration with activities throughout different disciplines, as well as policy-level discussion, contributing to new modes of knowledge production and diffusion, together with innovative concepts and understandings of evidence.

Dissemination vs fragmentation The cOAlition S and Science Europe report: 29,000 OA Diamond journals worldwide (only 1/3 in established indexes) 45% in Europe (50% in eastern Europe), 5% in US & Canada, 16% in Asia, 25% in Latin America 60% in SSH, 22% science, 17% medicine OA diamond journals are not yet fully compliant with the standards specified in the Plan S technical requirements 86% publish less than 50 articles per year

Value of discovery: supporting a knowledge society Specialised publications for a wider audience, not just peers Co-creation of research, sharing of data and code Science driven policy Education and civil society benefits Value of knowledge across many sectors: focus on translation Several models of publication will co-exist the subscription model may be already obsolete

- Publishing in high quality journals is important for researchers journals are, in their core functions, researcher-driven enterprises.
- European Humanities Conference in May 2021, Lisbon. United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the International Council for Philosophy and Human Sciences (CIPSH) Researchers in general are advocating for Diamond journals: free for users and free for authors, where a third party pays the costs of publishing
- Diamond: free for readers and authors A move to a fully open access landscape is clearly going to become much easier when there are more journals that can guarantee the same level of quality control and sustainability as current reputable subscription journals, as venues to disseminate research.
- Open Science is more than just few specialized articles across few well-known journals
