5. Defining Quality in Health Care
IOM Definition of Quality
“The degree to which health services for individuals and
populations increase the likelihood of desired health
outcomes….”-Institute of Medicine (IOM)
Definition of Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI)
“…a system that seeks to improve the provision of
services with an emphasis on future…the improvement
is ongoing.” -Mosby's Medical Dictionary, 8th edition

Patient Adherence
Why is patient adherence important?
• Improved healthcare outcomes largely depend upon
a patients' adherence to recommended treatment.
• In some disease conditions, more than 40% of
patients sustain significant risks by
misunderstanding, forgetting, or ignoring advice.

7. Addressing Patient Adherence through
Acceptance & Understanding
• Patients' knowledge and understanding,
• Clear and thorough communication;
• And trust in the therapeutic relationship.
• Knowing the patient as a person, including:
• Beliefs, attitudes and cultural context,
• Social supports, and emotional health.

empowered patient (more likely to adhere and
follow instructions because they “own” it)” - The

9. Tools for Patient Engagement
Smart Phones:
• The majority of patients surveyed…are more likely
to use an interactive app that can analyze logged
information and provide feedback (79.9 %).
• Ease of navigation (90.9 %) was the top
feature…most were interested in using a health
app to gain information (91.1%).
