• Jesus turns His back on the “sign seekers”
• Jesus warns about yeast
• Jesus heals a blind man (twice?)
• Jesus asks “Who do you say I AM?
• Jesus predicts the cross and resurrection
• Jesus rebukes “the first pope” again
5. Mark 8:2, The Third Day?
• Mark 8:2 "I feel compassion for the people
because they have remained with Me now
three days and have nothing to eat.
6. Double Blessing On The Third Day?
• 1 Cor 15:4 and that He was buried, and that He was
raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,"
• "Matthew 12:40 for just as JONAH WAS THREE DAYS
AND THREE NIGHTS IN THE BELLY…"
• Bible IN Five= Road to Emmaus Bible Study
• "Luke 24:13 And behold, two of them were going that
very day to a village named Emmaus, which was about
seven miles from Jerusalem…. "21 "But we were hoping
that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed,
besides all this, it is the third day since these things
happened."
• Gen 1:10+12 the third day gets a double blessing
7. Double Blessing On The Third Day?
• "Genesis 22:4 On the third day Abraham raised his
eyes and saw the place from a distance.“
• "Hebrews 11:17 "By faith Abraham, when he was
tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received
the promises was offering up his only begotten son;
18 it was he to whom it was said, "IN ISAAC YOUR
DESCENDANTS SHALL BE CALLED.“ 19 He considered
that God is able to raise people even from the dead,
from which he also received him back as a type."
• “a type”= a Father who sacrificed His only begotten
Son, who was received back from the dead on the
third day
8. The Third Day, The Day Of Double Blessing
• John 2:1 “On the third day there was a wedding in Cana
of Galilee…” Jesus 1st miracle
• Luke 24:46 and He said to them, "Thus it is written, that
the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the
third day,
• Acts 10:40 "God raised Him up on the third day…
• Genesis 12:3 …in you all the families of the earth will be
blessed.“
• "Acts 27:19 and on the third day they threw the ship's
tackle overboard with their own hands."
• No hope, good as dead, then... "Acts 27:24 saying, 'Do
not be afraid, Paul; you must stand before Caesar; and
behold, God has granted you all those who are sailing
with you.'"
9. Mark 8:4, No KFC
• Mark 8:4 And His disciples answered
Him, "Where will anyone be able to find
enough bread here in this desolate place to
satisfy these people?“
• And no complaining
about the cost this
time
10. Mark 8:6, Double Blessing
• Mark 8:6 …and taking the seven loaves, He gave thanks
[eucharisteo] and broke them…
• Mark 8:7 They also had a few small fish; and after He
had blessed [eulogeo] them…
• I’m surprised that our tradition doesn’t include a
blessing on every course of a meal.
• <2168> εὐχαριςτέω eucharisteo
• Meaning: to be thankful
• <2127> εὐλογέω eulogeo
• Meaning: to speak well of, praise
11. Genesis 1:9-10, Double Blessing
• Gen 1:10…God saw that it was good.
• Gen 1:12-13 ….And God saw that it was good. 13 the
third day.
• Which day is the first day?
• Double blessing on the third day, Tuesday.
• No blessing on the second day, Monday. Amen!
• So all good Jewish girls try to hold their weddings on
Tuesday, the third day, the “Day of Double Blessing”
and it was no different in Jesus time.
• Why do you suppose the Holy Spirit arranged the text
to have a Day Of Double Blessing?
12. Mark 8:7, Double Blessing
• YLT ESV CSB NKJ KJV NAS NAU ...blessed...
• NET ...giving thanks...
• NIV ... gave thanks ...
• Both are legitimate translations, but remember there
are different words, describing different aspects of our
prayer before meals;
• “to be thankful”
• “to speak well of, praise”
• So, whether you say “Let’s give thanks,” or “Let’s give
the blessing”, either way you’re acting like Jesus.
13. Mark 8:9, About Four Thousand
• Mark 8:9 About four thousand [masculine plural]
were there; and He sent them [masculine plural]
away.
• John MacArthur Study Bible says, “The
number of the men only, not including the
women and children (Matthew 15:38). This
could indicate at least 16,000 people.”
14. Mark 8:9 About Four Thousand
• Mark 8:9 About four thousand were there;
and He sent them away.
• Matthew 15:38 And those who ate were four
thousand men, besides women and children.
• All 4 gospels record the feeding of the 5000,
but only these two record the 4000.
17. Mark 8:10, Dalmanutha
• Mark 8:10 And immediately He entered the boat with
His disciples and came to the district of Dalmanutha.
• “…Dalmanutha is the unknown destination of Jesus on
the shores of the Sea of Gallilee after he fed the four
thousand, as recorded in Mark's gospel, (Mark 8:10). It
is sometimes believed to be in the vicinity
of Magdala, the alleged home town of Mary
Magdalene, since the parallel passage in Matthew's
gospel, Matthew 15:39, refers instead to
"Magadan", which has been taken to be a variant form
of "Magdala". Ken Dark has reported finding a possible
location of Dalmanutha.[1][2] That there was ever a
town called Dalmanutha is disputed…”
18. Mark 8:10, Dalmanutha/ Magdala
• “… The New Testament makes one disputable mention of a place
called Magdala. Matthew 15:39 of the King James' Version (KJV)
reads, "And he [Jesus] sent away the multitude, and took ship, and
came into the coasts of Magdala". However, the most
reliable Greek manuscripts give the name of the place as
"Magadan", and more modern scholarly translations (such as
the Revised Version) follow this. Although some
commentators[1] state confidently that the two refer to the same
place, others[2] dismiss the substitution of Magdala for Magadan as
simply "to substitute a known for an unknown place". The parallel
passage in Mark's gospel[8:10] gives (in the majority of manuscripts)
a quite different place name, Dalmanutha, although a handful of
manuscripts give either Magdala or Magadan[3] presumably by
assimilation to the Matthean text—believed in ancient times to be
older than that of Mark, though this opinion has now been reversed
….” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magdala
20. Let’s Read Mark 8:11-13
• Jesus feeds 4000 disciples
• Jesus turns His back on the “sign seekers”
• Jesus warns about yeast
• Jesus heals a blind man (twice?)
• Jesus asks “Who do you say I AM?
• Jesus predicts the cross and resurrection
• Jesus rebukes “the first pope” again
21. Mark 8:11, Argue With God?
• Mark 8:11 The Pharisees came out and began
to argue with Him, seeking from Him a sign
from heaven, to test Him.
• Job 13:3 "But I would speak to the Almighty,
And I desire to argue with God.
• Does it really make sense to argue with God?
23. Mark 8:13, Leaving Them?
• Mark 8:13 Leaving them, He again embarked
and went away to the other side.
• Leaving them, Leaving who?
• Mark 8:12 Sighing deeply in His spirit, He said,
"Why does this generation seek for a sign?
Truly I say to you, no sign will be given to this
generation.“
• He is leaving the Jewish leaders again.
24. Mark 8:12, This Generation
• Mark 8:12 Sighing deeply in His spirit, He said, "Why does
this generation [genea] seek for a sign? Truly I say to you, no
sign will be given to this generation [genea] ."
• Matthew 12:39 …"An evil and adulterous generation [genea]
craves for a sign… (1 Corinthians 1:22…Jews ask for signs and Greeks search
for wisdom)
• Matthew 24:34 "Truly I say to you, this generation [genea]
will not pass away until all these things take place.
• <1074> γενεά (genea)
• Meaning: race, family, generation
• Jesus is just about to multiply loaves and fish for the people
who lived in that “generation [genea] ,” He lived at that time,
the Apostles all lived at that time. Clearly Jesus uses genea
to mean the “race, family” of Israel.
25. Mark 8:12, This Generation

26. Mark 8:12, No Sign Will Be Given
• Mark 8:12 Sighing deeply in His spirit, He
said,…no sign will be given…
• Matthew 12:39 …no sign will be given to it but
the sign of Jonah the prophet;
• People who come to Jesus for the “signs” are
coming for the wrong reason.
• John 6:66 As a result of this many of His
disciples withdrew and were not walking with
Him anymore.
27. Mark 8:13, Over To Bethsaida
• Mark 8:13 …He again embarked and went
away to the other side.
• Over to the NE shore, where Bethsaida was
located; Mark 8:22 And they came to
Bethsaida…
29. Let’s Read Mark 8:14-21
• Jesus feeds 4000 disciples
• Jesus turns His back on the “sign seekers”
• Jesus warns about yeast
• Jesus heals a blind man (twice?)
• Jesus asks “Who do you say I AM?
• Jesus predicts the cross and resurrection
• Jesus rebukes “the first pope” again
30.
31. Loaves and Fishes Or Con?
• catholic.com/magazine says, “One Sunday I visited a parish
in another city and learned something new. The
multiplication of loaves didn’t really happen. The greedy
people following Jesus in the wilderness had loaves and
fishes stuffed up under their robes. The disciples didn’t
know about this surplus of hidden food, but this parish
priest did! Although the priest said he was taught in
seminary that Jesus kept pulling bread and fish out of the
basket, he learned the real truth from the natives in
Mexico…. the Catholic Church upholds without any
deviation whatsoever that our Lord actually did multiply
loaves and fishes…”
fishes
32. Loaves and Fishes Or Con?
• Many other preachers, teachers and priests,
try to say there was only one account and the
differences are just errors in the different
gospel writers accounts.
• So, what is true?
36. Mark 8:19-21
• "When I broke the five loaves for the five
thousand, how many baskets full of fragments
did you take up?" They (the disciples) said to
Him, "Twelve." "Also, when I broke the seven
for the four thousand, how many large baskets
full of fragments did you take up?" And they
said, "Seven." So He said to them, "How is it
you do not understand?" (Mark 8:19-21) What
didn't the disciples understand?
37. Let’s Read Mark 8:22-26
• Jesus feeds 4000 disciples
• Jesus turns His back on the “sign seekers”
• Jesus warns about yeast
• Jesus heals a blind man (twice?)
• Jesus asks “Who do you say I AM?
• Jesus predicts the cross and resurrection
• Jesus rebukes “the first pope” again
38. Mark 8:22, He Begged Him
• Mark 8:22 And they came to Bethsaida. And they
brought a blind man to Jesus and implored Him to
touch him.
• NKJ ESV …begged him to touch him.
• <3870> παρακαλέω parakaleo …
• Usage: appeal(4), appealed(1), appealing(2), beg(1),
begging(2), beseeching(1)
• Acts 15:17 SO THAT THE REST OF MANKIND MAY SEEK
THE LORD…
• Acts 17:27 that they would seek God, if perhaps they
might grope for Him and find Him…
• Hebrews 11:6…He is a rewarder of those who seek
Him.
39. Mark 8:23, Healing The Blind Man
• Mark 8:23 And taking the blind man by the
hand, He brought him out of the village; and
after spitting on his eyes, and laying His hands
upon him, He asked him, "Do you see
anything?" 24 And he looked up and said, "I
see men, for I am seeing them like trees,
walking about." 25 Then again He laid His
hands upon his eyes; and he looked intently
and was restored, and began to see
everything clearly.
40. Mark 8:23, Healing The Blind Man
• Many unique aspects of this;
• took him by the hand out of the village
• spitting on his eyes
• laying His hands upon him
• He asked him, "Do you see anything?
• seeing them like trees, walking about
• again He laid His hands upon his eyes
• he looked intently, was restored, and began to
see everything clearly.
41. Mark 8:23, Healing The Blind Man
• Some have tried to explain this 2 part healing as “even
Jesus doesn’t always get it right the first time. He’s like us.”
(heresy or just irreverent?)
• I prefer to think of this “seeing them like trees, walking
about” as the repair of the hardware of the eyes. Sight
restored!
• Then, the he “began to see everything clearly” as the
downloading of the software. His brain was then
programmed to correctly interpret the digital information
his eyes saw. Our eyes are digital just like our
computers, and our brain takes the pixels and identifies it
as the image.
• This reminds me of our justification (when we’re given eyes
to see), and our sanctification (when we begin to see
Scripture more clearly). We had a 2 part healing also.
42. Let’s Read Mark 8:27-30
• Jesus feeds 4000 disciples
• Jesus turns His back on the “sign seekers”
• Jesus warns about yeast
• Jesus heals a blind man (twice?)
• Jesus asks “Who do you say I AM?
• Jesus predicts the cross and resurrection
• Jesus rebukes “the first pope” again
43. Mark 8:29,
• Mark 8:29 And He continued by questioning
them, "But who do you say that I am?“…
• Impersonal who do people say that I am?"
• Personal, “who do you say that I am?”
• I encourage all of us to go forth and ask everyone
you meet, Bill Faye’s question, “To you, who is
Jesus.” Then listen to them to discern if He is the
Jesus of the Bible, the cults, false religions, or
have they created a god in their own image (a
good teacher, prophet, example for us, etc.).
44. Mark 8:29, Peter Gets It Right
• Mark 8:29 …Peter answered and said to Him,
"You are the Christ.“
• John 8:24 "Therefore I said to you that you will
die in your sins; for unless you believe that I
am He, you will die in your sins.“
• John 8:58 Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say
to you, before Abraham was born, I am."
45. Let’s Read Mark 8:31-38
• Jesus feeds 4000 disciples
• Jesus turns His back on the “sign seekers”
• Jesus warns about yeast
• Jesus heals a blind man (twice?)
• Jesus asks “Who do you say I AM?
• Jesus predicts the cross and resurrection
• Jesus rebukes “the first pope” again
46. Mark 8:32, Peter rebuked Him
• Mark 8:32 And He was stating the matter plainly.
And Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke
Him.
• You are the Christ, you’re just wrong!
• No LORD! Is an oxymoron.
• Peter should have known what Scripture said
about “the Christ, the Son of God” in Ps 22, Isaiah
53
• Luke 24:26 "Was it not necessary for the Christ to
suffer these things and to enter into His glory?"
47. Mark 8:34, Count The Cost,
Then Follow Me
• Mark 8:34 And He summoned the crowd with His
disciples, and said to them, "If anyone wishes to
come after Me, he must deny himself, and take
up his cross and follow Me.
• Peter is thinking in the flesh, and gets rebuked
• Matthew 16:24 …If anyone wishes to come after
Me…
• Mark 10:21 Looking at him, Jesus felt a love for
him and said to him, "One thing you lack: go and
sell all you possess and give to the poor, and you
will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow
Me."
48. Our Self Esteem Culture
Or Christ But Not Both
• Mark 8:34
…he must
deny himself,
and take up
his cross and
follow Me.
49. Mark 8:36, Good Memory Verse
• Mark 8:36 "For what does it profit a man to
gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?
50. Mark 8:36, Life =Heaven Or Hell
• Blaise Pascal said, “Between us and heaven or
hell there is only life, which is the frailest thing in
the world.”
• Psalm 49:7 No man can by any means redeem his
brother Or give to God a ransom for him—
• Job 27:8 "For what is the hope of the godless
when he is cut off, When God requires his life?
• 1 John 2:15 Do not love the world nor the things
in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love
of the Father is not in him.
51. Mark 8:36, What Is Most
Holy/Precious Thing You Have?
• Mark 8:36 "For what does it profit a man to gain
the whole world, and forfeit his soul?
• Matthew 7:6 "Do not give what is holy to
dogs, and do not throw your pearls before
swine…
• The most precious gift we can give is the gospel
of Jesus Christ!
• Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the
gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation…
• 1 Timothy 1:11…the glorious gospel of the
blessed God
